The purpose of this study is to examine the exterior remodeling examples of urban houses which have been changed to be mixed-use buildings with commercial use, and to guide the future exterior remodeling. Some of the research results are as follows: 1) Exterior remodeling of commercialized urban detached houses is focused on two-dimensional changes of exterior surface, rather than on three-dimensional changes of mass or shape. 2) Unlike commercial buildings generally relying on signboards to express their commercial nature, the exterior-renovated houses with commercial uses mainly rely on the image of whole building shape based on exterior materials and colors. 3) Installations of free-standing walls and double skins are preferred as exterior remodeling techniques, due to the structural limitation of exterior walls.

The main purpose of this study was to propose the development direction and application method of wood as a landscape material by analysis and investigation of the present condition and characteristics of wood, which is a quite interesting natural material for its beauty as an exterior material. This study is based on the relationships between the establishment of development direction and practical use of exterior wood as a landscape material. The research method used was fieldwork and data analysis. On the analysis of the present condition of wood utilization, it was investigated to need of complement of a design aspect, use method, the limit of use type, and use range. The direction of a durable design for the practical use of exterior wood as landscape materials was established. On the use of exterior wood, first, the characteristics of wood have to be understood. Then exterior wood can be used while preserving its safety and beauty over a long time by physical and chemical treatment. At the same time, an application plan for the practical and effective use of wood as an outdoor landscape material, we concluded that future research in design aspects is needed in consideration of physical, chemical, and structural properties of durable wood materials used in outdoor facilities.

The purpose of this study is analysing the characteristics of interior space aiming for the exterior space in mixed-used development. The range of this study is limited as passage, department store, shoppingmall and Mixed Use Development. The method of this study is as follows. First, analysing the 7 samples of the interior space aiming for the exterior space in MXD through the framework of public character categorized as 5 factors, accessibility, openness, comfort properties, connectivity, convenience in use. Second, drawing a conclusion from the precedent step. The result of this study is as follows. First, the interior space has become bigger with time. And the public character is expanded with having the same structure of the city space. Second, the interior space solves the problem of the exterior space of city but prefers the same factors with the exterior space. Third, the street in the interior space has the characteristics of openness and comfort properties through diversification. And the open space is planned in various parts of the MXD and has the character of accessibility and connectivity.

In contrast to apartments, detached houses offer the possibility of more than one entrance connecting interior and exterior spaces. This study examines the location, function, and use of second doors in detached houses in rural areas. The study employs survey and interviews conducted in 2015, focusing on 18 detached houses among 40 houses previously surveyed in 1995. In 1995, 21 second doors were found, while in 2015, 19 were found. The study led to the following conclusions. First, most houses did have second doors installed by 1995 or 2015. Second doors tended to be installed in kitchen and utility rooms. The function of second doors was most closely connected to the kitchen because utility rooms were placed adjacent to kitchens. Secondly, changes in the use and number of second doors were changes in family life cycle and composition, the need for new equipment facilities, the use of new architectural materials, and the installation of new second doors for extension of space. Finally, exterior spaces accessed by second doors tend to be a meeting of semi-interior or semi-exterior space and exterior space only. Those spaces tended to be designed for kitchen fixtures or to support kitchen activities.

In study, we evaluate the texture and satisfaction of building exterior materials using red mud, which is generated as a by product of industrial use, and present an objective indicator by predicting the influence of exterior elements such as material type and roughness in the evaluation of building exterior materials.

The exterior finish not only has a relationship to the functionality of building, but also the spatial aesthetics and visual perception. Common exterior finishes are wood, stone or acrylic based and etc. However, these finishes have different attributes which can alter the quality of the architecture, such as durability, moisture and fire resistance. To make up for the short-comings of these materials, we have used iron based resources for optimization. However, iron materials are expensive, so they have limitations in general use. In this study, we have experimented with various forms of exterior finishes using cement, which is the most efficient and widely used building material with several economic advantages. We experimented with different materials to use as the formwork for the gloss of the cement matrix. As a result, the gloss show that order of urethane, steel, and wood material.

The purpose of this study is to understand the importance of exterior environments and to identify the design guidelines for the therapeutic garden for cognitively impaired seniors with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The data was collected from 4 Adult Day Care Centers, 2 Nursing Homes, & 1 Assisted living in the U.S.A. from 2001 to 2002 by interview and the floor plan about the outdoor space. Although some may believe that patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders are unresponsive to environment, evidence shows that environments especially designed for cognitively impaired seniors can maintain or increase their level of functioning. The use of specially designed exterior environments nay have in reducing incidents of aggressive behavior, and contributing significantly to a wanderer management program. The checklist includes 6 dimensions： safety environment, various sensual stimulations, social interactions, wandering, privacy, and support orientation and reality. The results indicated that the exterior environment have to support wandering behavior, orientation and reality.

This paper is focused on studying a pedestrian passage that forms exterior space of the housing unit on diverse prerequisites and convenience of residential environment regards to plans for Multi-family Housing Complex. The paper explores the actual usage of a pedestrian passage installed in Multi-family Housing Complex and examine whether the nature-friendly space that includes the exterior pedestrian passage of the housing unit is being applied variously on a pedestrian passage. In order to obtain an analysis of the current status on case study unit, the study has prepared an analyzing tool for the environment in use for the exterior pedestrian passage and was able to construction problematic points by applying the obtained data. Thanks for the analysis, a comprehensive evaluation on the plans for the pedestrian passage was implemented through correlation with a green tract of land, living space and the exterior pedestrian passage installed in Multi-family Housing Complex.

Considering heat insulation and beautiful sight of construction, making use of exterior panels is increasing. Recently the exterior panels now are weak very much, and so in consequence of the weakness fire spreads rapidly. Compared with internal fire, external vertical fire spread rate goes rapidly and it is extensive in spread range, therefore it is dangerous very much. Accordingly, under present condition of poor standard of exterior panels, it is required to take measure to meet the appropriate situation. In this study, by making use of FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulation) program about external vertical fire of high rise building, fire behavior is searched by computer. It is important that realizing by computer fire modeling about external vertical fire must be included certainly in procedure of fire performance design in the future. In modeling program, FDS version 5 is available, and aluminium composite panel is applied in external panels. In this study, for realizing of actual fire condition, FDS is applied by details of fire scenarios considering influence of wind.

In this study, the adequacy evaluation of limestone for exterior use is presented. Major flaws of limestone for exterior use are reviewed. In addition, freezing-thawing test of the limestone specimens were performed. As a result, the limestone specimens was damaged by the freezing and thawing action for 300 cycle.
