  • The study examined the effects of shift pattern and expertise on perceived workload and performance for aviation security screeners. 18 security screeners participated in this study, in which data were analyzed by dividing them into two groups (experts vs. less-experts). We measured their perceived workloads and performances (i.e., reading time through X-ray) as a function of shift pattern and time condition. As a result, highly experienced screeners (experts) showed high workload during the morning shift, while lowly experienced screeners (less-experts) reported high workload during the full-day and the afternoon shifts. In addition, less-experts took a longer time to inspect the baggage when they worked for the full-day and the afternoon shifts. Particularly, in the last time slot of the full-dat shift, expert screeners had a high workload, while both groups showed a high-level of workload at around 17:30 in the afternoon shift.

  • The purpose of this research was to identify expertise in ait traffic control by using cognitive skill analysis for novices and experts in routine and non-routine situations. The result of study was to understand expertise in air traffic control tasks in terms of what cognitive processes are responsible for the expert's high performance levels. The problem solving task was difficult for novices, but performed relatively automatically by experts in a routine situation. The difficulty could indicate the presence of controlled processing. Rather than rules and strategies, novices focused more on environmental factors, which merely increase cognitive load. In a non-routine situation, novices showed that they did not categorize the information consistently and alternative resources were not available for them. Experts, however, performed automatically a task by arranging and organizing information related to problem solving components in contexts without regard to a routine and non-routine situation. Especially experts developed a stable representation and directed alternative resources for air traffic flow and efficiency. Based on the results, cognitive processes of experts could be useful to understand expert performance and analyze the learning process, which imply the necessity of developing expertise systematically.

  • Objective: To compare head and hand movement patterns during squash forehand motions between experts and less-skilled squash players. Method: Four experts and four less-skilled squash players participated in this study. They performed squash forehand swings and a VICON motion analysis system was used to obtain displacement and velocity data of the head and right hand during the movement. Mann-Whitney U-tests were performed to compare head and hand range of motion and peak velocity, and cross-correlation was performed to analyze the head-hand coordination pattern between groups in three movement directions. Results: In terms of head and hand kinematic data, experts had greater head range of motion during down swings than less-skilled squash players. Experts seemed to reach peak hand velocity at impact by reaching peak head velocity followed by hand peak velocity within a given temporal sequence. In terms of head-hand coordination patterns, both groups revealed high positive correlations in the medial-lateral direction, indicating a dominant allocentric coordination pattern. However, experts had uncoupled coordination patterns in the vertical direction and less-skilled squash players had high positive correlations. These results indicate that the head-hand movement pattern likely an important factor squash forehand movement. Conclusion: Analysis of head and hand movement patterns could be a key variable in squash training to reach expert-level performance.

  • This study was conducted to investigate priority recognition of experts and related facility operators in establishing policies for revitalizing agro-healing services. After reviewing related studies, 5 policy division and 19 detailed sector were drawn, including improving accessibility, improving promotion and information provision method, improved public relations and information provision, diversification of facility and program, financial support, and expansion of expert and specialized institutions. A questionnaire survey was conducted on agro-healing experts, agro-healing facility operators, social welfare experts, and social welfare facility operators. The AHP analysis indicated that agro-healing experts and facility operators had the highest priority in the division of expansion of expert and specialized institutions, while social welfare experts and facility operators had the highest priority in financial support. The IPA analysis was conducted to identify the priority of each policy sector. Respondents recognized above normal importance to policy divisions, but were relatively aware of the importance of improving accessibility, with overall satisfaction level appearing to be moderate. The results of this study are expected to provide useful information for establishing agro-healing policies and for establishing effective strategies.

  • In the construction industry, many of the inspection activities have been conducted by experts' eyes. The inspection performance of this kind of method is highly influenced by experience and knowledge of the expert. The experts who have fluent experience may show better inspection performance than the novice. The problem is the deficiency of experts in the near future due to the acceleration of retirement of the aging expert. Eye-tracking technology can be a solution to effectively educate the novice through transferring the knowledge of an expert and to advance the inspection activities using experts' eyes. This study, as an initial step to suggest the solution, (1) figured out the state of the art of eye-tracking technology, (2) reviewed the previous research to improve the inspection in construction using experts' eye, (3) explored the potential of the application area of eye-tracking technology, and (4) established the framework to develop the advanced inspection method in two application area which are construction site safety management and infrastructure performance measurement.

  • The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is widely used for evaluation of large projects. If a group of experts with different expertise are involved in a AHP decision, they need some way to aggregate their opinions. In this paper, we suggest a way to aggregate the experts' priorities in a given hierarchy using the concept of the Bayesian decision analysis. A criterion that can be used for screening out unreliable data is introduced, and it is used for priority aggregation. Some numerical results are shown to illustrate the procedure.

  • Combination of AHP priorities is essential in combining opinions of multiple experts. There are two ways to get combined priorities: one is to combine the pairwise matrices and obtain the priority from it and another is to combine the individual priorities. In this paper, we use a Dirichlet probability model to combine the priorities from multiple experts. The resulting combined priority is an expected value of the model, which is a function of some measure of the homogeneity and credibility of the group of experts. We give some interpretations of this measure and illustrate them by numerical example.

  • This study examines the limitations of existing crime mapping that relies mainly on reported crime data, suggests a crime mapping method based on experts' and users' assessments of a neighborhood environment as an alternative approach, and conducts a case study on a real-world site by applying the suggested approach. According to the results of the case analysis, while the areas adjoining arterial roads with heavy pedestrian traffic were shown as high crime risk areas in the crime map based on actual reported crime data, the areas adjoining local roads with low pedestrian traffic were high-risk areas in the crime risk area map based on experts' and residents' evaluations. This study makes a contribution to the field in that it demonstrates the detailed application process of crime risk area mapping according experts' and residents' evaluations, compares the results with those of an existing crime map, and finally shows that the former can function as a complement to the latter.

  • One of the most important problems on rule induction methods is that they cannot extract rules, which plausibly represent experts decision processes. On one hand, rule induction methods induce probabilistic rules, the description length of which is too short, compared with the experts rules. On the other hand, construction of Bayesian networks generates too lengthy rules. In this paper, the characteristics of experts rules are closely examined and a new approach to extract plausible rules is introduced, which consists of the following three procedures. First, the characterization of decision attributes (given classes) is extracted from databases and the classes are classified into several groups with respect to the characterization. Then, two kinds of sub-rules, characterization rules for each group and discrimination rules for each class in the group are induced. Finally, those two parts are integrated into one rule for each decision attribute. The proposed method was evaluated on a medical database, the experimental results of which show that induced rules correctly represent experts decision processes.

  • This study beings from solving problems of permanent rental housing with environmentally-friendly planning factors to raise quality of life. Environmentally-friendly planning factors of permanent rental housing are derived from the study of references and green building certification systems of other countries. Surveys of inhabitants and experts give weights on these factors. Inhabitants do are focussed natural ventilation, life cycle cost, operation and maintenance cost. This reflects their interest in indoor amenity and a burden on the cost. Experts put more weights on pedestrian spaces considering the old and feeble persons and block planning. Besides, T-test pointed out that there are meaningful differences in land use between inhabitants and experts. Though inhabitants' opinion has priority because they are real user, experts' opinion which has the variety and the view in the long term should be reflected.
