BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated whether a mobile health (mHealth) application can instigate healthy behavioral changes and improvements in metabolic disorders in individuals with metabolic abnormalities. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants were divided into an mHealth intervention group (IG), which used a mobile app for 24 weeks, and a conventional IG. All mobile apps featured activity monitors, with blood pressure and glucose monitors, and body-composition measuring devices. The two groups were compared after 24 weeks in terms of health-behavior practice rate and changes in the proportion of people with health risks, and health behaviors performed by the IG that contributed to reductions in more than one health risk factor were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Preference for low-sodium diet, reading nutritional facts, having breakfast, and performing moderate physical activity significantly increased in the mHealth IG. Furthermore, the mHealth IG showed a significant increase of eight items in the mini-dietary assessment; particularly, the items "I eat at least two types of vegetables of various colors at every meal" and "I consume dairies, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, every day." The proportion of people with health risks, with the exception of fasting glucose, significantly decreased in the mHealth IG, while only the proportion of people with at-risk triglycerides and waist circumference of females significantly decreased in the control group. Finally, compared to those who did not show improvements of health risks, those who showed improvements of health risks in the mHealth IG had an odds ratio of 1.61 for moderate to vigorous physical activity, 1.65 for "I do not add more salt or soy sauce in my food," and 1.77 for "I remove fat in my meat before eating." CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the additional use of a community-based mHealth service through a mobile application is effective for improving health behaviors and lowering metabolic risks in Koreans.

Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of personal characteristics and health beliefs on health behaviors of foreign workers living in Korea. Methods: The subjects of this study were foreign workers who understood the purpose of this study and allowed participation in the workplaces in northern Gyeonggi Province. The final subjects were 206, and collected all data were analyzed by SPSS 23.0. Results: The personal characteristics of the subjects were 51.0% for male and 49.0% for female, and the average age was 31.76(±6.96) years old. The mean for each health belief factors was perceived benefits 4.03(±.56), perceived severity 3.75(±.73), perceived susceptibility 3.65(±.64), self-efficacy 3.56(±.83), and perceived barriers 3.34(±.73). The mean of each health behavior factors was non-smoking 4.02(±.83), drinking 3.92(±.80), health responsibility 3.42(±.83), exercise 3.37(±1.01), dietary habits 1.91(±.11), and stress management 1.72(±.27). The correlation between sub-factors of health belief was all at the level of p <0.01. The sub-factors of health belief were health behavior and perceived susceptibility(r=.773, p<0.01), followed by self-efficacy(r=.760, p<0.01), and perceived severity(r=.574, p<0.01). The factors affecting health behavior were self-efficacy(β=.540, p<.001), perceived susceptibility(β=.461, p<.001), perceived benefits(β=.152, p<.05), marriage status(β=-. 100, p <.05), and income(β=-. 120, p <.05) in order. Conclusion: In-depth consideration of factors that can affect the physical, psychological and social health of foreign workers, and various program development and intervention strategies based on these factors should be sought.
Purpose: Abdominal breathing exercises are recommended to activate the breathing muscles and the pelvic floor muscles, as well as to increase postural alignment during exhalation. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of improving abdominal muscle strength on menstrual pain in women in their twenties using abdominal breathing exercises. Method: In this study, 32 female university students were included as the subjects. The subjects were divided into two groups based on the area of menstrual pain: lumbar pain (n=16) and lower abdomen pain (n=16). The abdominal breathing positions were divided into two positions, which included a hook lying position and hip and knee flexions at $90^{\circ}$ in the supine position. Exercises were used to strengthen the abdominal muscles during exhalation. Four sets of the exercises were completed three times a week over the course of eight weeks. The degree of pain was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Muscle thickness was measured using an ultrasound. Result: The thickness of the transverse abdominis (TrA) and internal oblique (IO) increased in the lower abdomen pain group. However, thickness of the external oblique (EO) did not increased following abdominal breathing. No significant difference in posture was identified in the lower abdomen group. TrA thickness increased significantly in the lumbar pain group. However, thickness did not increase significantly in the lumbar pain group. In addition, the lumbar pain group experienced no significant effects on posture. IO thickness increased following hip and knee flexions at $90^{\circ}$ in the lumbar pain group. Menstrual pain decreased following intervention in both groups. There was no significant difference in the degree of pain reduction between both groups. Conclusion: As examples of alternative medicine, abdominal breathing exercises may be effective in decreasing menstrual pain.

Objectives The objective of the study is to review the Korean traditional medicine treatment used in cruciate ligament injury. Methods According to patients, treatment methods, research design, evaluation tools, outcome, we searched for studies which performed Korean traditional medical treatment on patient with cruciate ligament injury. Results In 11 studies, total number of patents were 78. Patients were conducted with 11 kinds of treatment, which is acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture, electro-acupuncture, burning acupuncture, moxibustion, physiotherapy, exercise, Chuna and cupping. The most commonly used measurement was visual analog scale. Conclusions Throughout the study, we could organize Korean traditional medicine treatment for patient with cruciate ligament injury. However it is difficult to figure out among the 11 intervention which interventions were effective in improving symptom. Therefore, further researches like randomized clinical trial and systematic review is needed in order to enhance the evidence of the Korean traditional medicine.

Objectives: To investigate the research trends of qigong interventions to make influence on performance enhancement. Methods: Korean databases were searched for papers related to studies of qigong interventions to assist subjects perform better. Results: Twelve articles published in Korean Journals from 2000 to 2017 were reviewed. Among the retrieved papers, eight were applied with breathing exercises, including Dan-jeon breathing training, one applied with brain breathing meditation with DoIn exercise, one applied with qigong meditation, one applied with qi-training, and one applied with brain breathing training. RoBANS was used for assessment. The quality of selected articles was generally low. 10 of the 12 articles on qigong reported that experimental group showed statistically significant increase of performance enhancement both directly and indirectly. Conclusions: Reviewing 12 articles, this study established that qigong interventions might be beneficial for enhancing performance especially in sports. However, more scientifically designed study on qigong therapy are needed to prove the efficacy and effectiveness.
Obesity is considered as a primary health problem over the past century in line with life environmental changes. It is mainly associated with increased risk of numerous chronic diseases which may significantly reduce health-related quality of life. Therefore, efforts to reduce weight should be performed. This study suggested a novel approach to reduce body fat by applying external stimulation which is micro-current stimulation (MCS). In this clinical study, we evaluated the potential effects of MCS for reduction of abdominal fat and weight loss. Prior to the clinical test, computational simulation was conducted to find the proper MCS conditions that allow externally applied stimulation to reach the internal fat section from the external skin. Particularly, the clinical study evaluated the unilateral effects of MCS for body fat loss and lipolysis without any additional limitations such as physical exercise and dietary therapy. The results showed that whole body fat, waist circumferences, and abdominal fat are gradually decreased after intervention in proportion to the time. From the results, we can estimate that MCS can be effective on the body fat loss by activation of lipolysis in human adipose.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to confirm the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for treating breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), thus providing a clinical basis for acupuncture treatment and helping to develop clinical practice guideline through consideration of used meridians and acupoints. Methods: Clinical studies applying acupuncture on breast cancer-related lymphedema were searched through 7 databases such as The Cochrane Library Central, Embase, Pubmed and CAJ. Interventions and results of the selected clinical studies were analyzed. Results: 8 Clinical studies were finally included according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. There were 6 randomized controlled studies and 2 single-arm pilot studies. All of those studies were searched in The Cochrane Library Central, Embase, Pubmed and CAJ and written in English and Chinese. Treatment group applied acupuncture as a Korean medicine intervention. Interventions of control group were made with non-treatment, upper limb exercise, and oral administration of capillary stabilizer or diuretics. Outcome measurements varied from paper to paper but every study measured reduction in arm circumference. Among 8 studies, 6 studies reported statistically significant reduction in arm circumference in treatment group and there were no serious adverse effects. Conclusions: This study suggested that acupuncture has few side effects as well as statistically significant effects on many aspects in treating breast cancer-related lymphedema. However the results should be taken cautiously as more clinical studies are needed.

Background: Performing cognitive tasks and muscular fatigue have been shown to increase muscle activity of the lower extremity during quiet standing. A common intervention to reduce muscular fatigue is to provide a softer shoe-surface interface. However, little is known regarding how muscle activity is affected by softer shoe-surface interfaces during static standing. The purpose of this study was to assess lower extremity muscular activity during erect standing on three different standing surfaces, before and after an acute workload and during cognitive tasks. Methods: Surface electromyography was collected on ankle dorsiflexors and plantarflexors, and knee flexors and extensors of fifteen male participants. Dependent electromyography variables of mean, peak, root mean square, and cocontraction index were calculated and analyzed with a $2{\times}2{\times}3$ within-subject repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: Pre-workload muscle activity did not differ between surfaces and cognitive task conditions. However, greater muscle activity during post-workload balance assessment was found, specifically during the cognitive task. Cognitive task errors did not differ between surface and workload. Conclusions: The cognitive task after workload increased lower extremity muscular activity compared to quite standing, irrespective of the surface condition, suggesting an increased demand was placed on the postural control system as the result of both fatigue and cognitive task.
