  • The regulatory periodic inspection program (PSI) conducted at every overhaul period is the most important process for confirming the safety of nuclear power plants. The PSI for operating nuclear power plants in Korea mainly consist of component level performance check that had been developed based on deterministic approach putting the same degree of importance to all the inspection items. This inspection methodology is likely to be effective for preoperational inspection. However, once the plant is put into service, the PSI must be focused on whether to minimize the risk of accident using defense-in-depth concept and risk insight. The incorporation of defense-in-depth concept and risk insight into the deterministic based safety inspection has not been well studied so far. In this study, two track approaches are proposed to make sure that core damage be avoided: one is to secure success path and the other to block the failure path in a specific event tree of PSA. The investigation shows how to select safety important components and how to set up inspection group to ensure that core damage would not occur for a given initiating event, which results in strengthening defense-in-depth level 3.

  • Approximations such as the delete-term approximation, rare event approximation, and minimal cutset upper bound (MCUB) need to be prudently applied for the quantification of a seismic probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) model. Important characteristics of seismic PSA models indicate that preserving the success branches in a primary seismic event tree is necessary. Based on the authors' experience in modeling and quantifying plant-level seismic PSA models, the effects of applying negate-down to the success branches in primary seismic event trees on the quantification results are summarized along with the following three insights gained: (1) there are two competing effects on the MCUB-based quantification results: one tending to increase and the other tending to decrease; (2) the binary decision diagram does not always provide exact quantification results; and (3) it is identified when the exact results will be obtained, and which combination provides more conservative results compared to the others. Complicated interactions occur in Boolean variable manipulation, approximation, and the quantification of a seismic PSA model. The insights presented herein can assist PSA analysts to better understand the important theoretical principles associated with the quantification of seismic PSA models.

  • Nibellen structural system is a novel resilient bracing system based on the application of Bellville disks and Nitinol rods. The cyclic behavior of Nibellen assembly was obtained, and the design equations were developed based on the available literature. Seismic performance of the system was then studied analytically. Two groups of buildings with different lateral force resisting systems were designed and studied: one group with the Nibellen system, and the other with the special concentrically braced frame system. Each building group consisted of 5-, 10-, and 15-story buildings. The Design-Base-Event (DBE) and Maximum Considered Event (MCE) were considered as the seismic hazard, and a suite of seven ground motions were scaled accordingly for response history analyses. Finally, the resiliency of the buildings was studied by obtaining the functionality curve of the buildings before and after the seismic event. The construction cost of the 5-story building with Nibellen bracing system increased but the post-earthquake cost decreased significantly. The application of Nibellen system in the 10- and 15-story buildings reduced both the construction and repair costs, considerably. Resiliency of all the buildings was improved when Nibellen system was used as the lateral force resisting system.

  • This study explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock prices of state-owned enterprises listed on the Indonesia Stock exchange. The impact of the pandemic is analyzed based on different pandemic phases and the corresponding government pandemic interventions to curb the disease. This study analyzes 6 pandemic event dates, covering the time period from January 2020 to February 2021. A total of 20 state-owned enterprises are included as the sample of this study. Test of difference is employed to compare the stock prices of the state-owned enterprises before and after each pandemic event date. In general, this study confirms the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock prices, especially the event in 2020, although some variations do exist. The results of the study reveal a significant decrease in the stock prices of the state-owned enterprises after the announcement of the first confirmed COVID-19 cases, the announcement of COVID-19 as a global pandemic, the imposing of Large Scale Social Restriction (PSBB I and PSBB II). In contrast, the stock prices increase after the imposing of a new normal policy and the imposing of Public Activity Restriction (PPKM). This study also documents that the effect of the pandemic may vary based on the pandemic phase.

  • This study proposed an equation for Rainfall Threshold for Flood Warning (RTFW) for urban areas based on computer simulations. First, a coupled 1D-2D dual-drainage model was developed for nine watersheds in Seoul, Korea. Next, the model simulation was repeated for a total of 540 combinations of the synthetic rainfall events and watershed imperviousness (9 watersheds × 4 NRCS Curve Number (CN) values × 15 rainfall events). Then, the results of the 101 simulations with the critical flooded depth (0.25m-0.35m) were used to develop the equation that relates the value of RTFW to the rainfall event temporal variability (represented as coefficient of variation) and the watershed Curve Number. The results suggest that 1) the rainfall with greater temporal variability causes critical floods with less amount of total rainfall; and that 2) the greater imperviousness requires less rainfall to have critical floods. For validation, the proposed equation was applied for the flood warning system with two storm events occurred in 2010 and 2011 over 239 watersheds in Seoul. The results of the application showed high performance of the warning system in issuing the flood warning, with the hit, false and missed alarm rates at 68%, 32% and 7.4% respectively for the 2010 event and 49%, 51% and 10.7% for the event in 2011.

  • The liquefaction process system is regarded as primary among all topside systems in LNG FPSO. This liquefaction process system is composed of many types of equipment. LNG equipment on offshore plants has quite different demands on the equipment compared to traditional onshore LNG plants, so the reliability analysis of this process system needs to be performed. This study investigates how DEVS formalism for discrete event simulation can be used to reliability analysis of the liquefaction cycle for LNG FPSO. The reliability analysis method based on DEVS formalism could be better model for reflecting the system configuration than the conventional reliability analysis methods, such as fault tree analysis and event tree analysis.
