As earthquakes continue to occur in Korea in recent years, seismic evaluation and retrofit of existing school buildings have been carried out. Many domestic school buildings were built using or referring to standard drawings. Therefore, if the overall structural characteristics of a school building can be known first based on standard drawings, it can be provided as valuable data for detailed seismic evaluation. For this reason, this study investigated the weak structural components and failure modes by comparing the strength of beams, columns, and joints constituting standard school buildings constructed in the 1980s. The evaluation was performed for different types of standard drawings and different material strengths. The results showed that the joint was mainly the weakest due to the eccentricity, and the failure modes were partially changed depending on the material strength.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the health performance of existing buildings which completed green remodeling using the WELL Building Standard developed by Delos in the USA. The features and the level of improvement in health were examined and the results were as follows. As a result of comprehensive evaluation of the health performance of the target building, the health performance after green remodeling improvement was improved by 17.3% compared to before green remodeling. As a result of applying the alternatives for improving health performance, improvements were 22.9% by Alternative 1, 28.8% by Alternative 2, and 28.7% by Alternative 3. If the improvement ratio with respect to the construction cost were compared, Alternative 1 was the best followed by Alternative 2. Finally, the cost effectiveness of improving health performance against construction cost were best in the order of self-closing door installation, airtight seal, and pest inspections.

Korea is considered to be immune from the earthquake hazard because it is located far away from the active fault. However, recent earthquake caused a loss of lives and economical loss worldwide. Hence there has been raised an importance of the earthquake resistant design for various infrastructures. In this research, the seismic design and evaluation criterion for RC bridge pier were proposed from the experimental results of 82 circular RC bridge piers tested in domestic and aboard. New seismic criterion was introduced the limited ductile design provision suitable to Korean peninsula, which would be classified as a low or moderate seismic region. In addition, further important topic for the seismic safety of RC bridge piers in Korea is the seismic performance enhancement of RC bridge piers, which were designed and constructed before the 1992 seismic design provision. Therefore, the proposed seismic performance evaluation criterion could be very useful to judge seismic retrofit need or not according to the residual seismic performance of the RC bridge piers. Also, it could reduce an uncertainty for the safety of the infrastructure under earthquakes.

In paper after the strong earthquake of recently the Korea neighborhood, the Korean government survey show that the 86% of school buildings in Korea are in potential damage risk and only 14% of them are designed as earthquake-resistance buildings. Earthquake Reinforcing projects of school have been a leading by the ministry of education, however their reinforcing methods done by not proved a engineering by experiment which results in uneconomical and uneffective rehabilitation for the future earthquake. An experimental and analytical study have been conducted for the shear reinforcing method of RC beam by axis and horizontal axis load using attaching composite beam. Based on the previous research, in this study, design examples are given to show the performance evaluation for the column reinforcing of old school buildings using nonlinear analysis is going to be conducted and strengthening method is going to be on the market after their performance is proved by the test.
Most bridge piers were practically designed and constructed with lap spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels before the 1992 seismic design provisions of Korea Bridge Design Specification were implemented. It has been known that lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region is not desirable for seismic performance of RC bridge piers. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of existing circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the Quasi-static test and to propose the need of seismic retrofit of existing bridge piers through the damage level. Test specimens were nonseismically designed with the aspect ratio 4.0 which could induce the flexural failure mode. It was confirmed from this experiment that significant reduction of seismic performance was observed for test specimens with lap spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Pertinent seismic retrofit was determined to be needed for existing RC bridge piers with the lap-spliced of $50\%$ longitudinal reinforcing steels.

Masonry structure is a style of building which has been widely applied as residential facilities of low and middle stories, commercial and public facilities etc. But it is possible to destroy by loss of adhesive strength or sliding when lateral forces, such as earthquake, occurs. This study proposes a seismic retrofit method for masonry structure and its seismic performance is demonstrated by shaking table test. Two specimens per each shaking direction were made, having out-of-plane(weak axis) and in-plane(strong axis) direction. External load of 1 ton was also applied for each specimen during the test, to model the behavior of reinforced masonry wall. As a result of shaking table tests, it is shown that the specimen applying the proposed seismic retrofit method showed acceptable behaviors in both of Korea building design criteria(0.14g) and USA seismic criteria suggested by IBC(0.4g). However, it was observed that stiffness of the specimen toward out-of-plane was rapidly decreasing when seismic excitations over 0.14g were loaded. In comparison of relative displacements, maximum relative displacement of specimens which were accelerated toward out-of-plane with 0.4g at once was 29~31% of maximum relative displacement when specimens were gradually accelerated from 0.08g to 0.4g, while the maximum relative displacement of specimens accelerated toward in-plane has similar value in both cases. Therefore, it is concluded that the wall accelerated toward out-of-plane is more affected by hair crack or possible fatigues caused by seismic excitation.

The real situation of an underground reinforced concrete(RC) structure with the surrounding soil medium subjected to seismic load is quite difficult to be simulated through an expensive work and, even if it is possible to arrange such an experiment, it will be too expensive. So development of analytical method can be applied usefully to seismic design and seismic retrofit through an analysis of seismic behavior and seismic performance evaluation. A path-dependent constitutive model for soil that can estimate the response of soil layer is indispensible for dealing with kinematic interaction of RC/soil entire system under seismic loads. And interface model which deals with the dynamic interaction of RC/soil entire system is also necessary. In this study, finite element analysis program that can consider path-dependent behavior of RC and soil, and interfacial behavior between RC and soil is developed for rational seismic analysis of RC/soil entire system. Using this program, nonlinear behavior of interface between RC and soil is analyzed, and the effect of interfacial behavior to entire system is investigated.

Recently, it is required to improve the structural performance, such as durability and earthquake resistant capacity due to the deterioration of structural components in the existing reinforced concrete building with the old aging and transition of design code. Therefore, the new technology should be developed, such as seismic retrofit and improvement of structural performance in the existing reinforced concrete building. This analytical study was performed to verify the effects of basic and reinforcing system in the reinforced concrete building. The analytical results by nonlinear finite element method were compared with the experimental results and the comparisons are judged to be good.

In this paper the recent research and application activities on smart structure technologies for civil infra structures in Korea are briefly introduced. The developments of structural health monitoring systems and effective retrofit/maintenance methodologies for infra structures have become active in Korea since the middle of 1990's, as the number of the deteriorated infra structures, mostly built on the rapidly industrialized period of 1970's, has increased very rapidly. Discussions are made on smart sensors, non destructive technologies, monitoring and assessment methods and systems for civil infra structures.
Despite that the failure of sign structure may not have disastrous consequence, its sheer number still ensures the need for rigorous safety standard to regulate their maintenance and construction. During its service life, a sign structure is subject to extensive wind load, sometimes well over its permissible design load. A fragility analysis of a sign structure offers a tool for rational decision making and safety evaluation by using a probabilistic framework to consider the various sources of uncertainty that affect its performance. Wind fragility analysis was used to determine the performance of sign structure based on the performance of its connection components. In this study, basic wind fragility concepts and data required to support the fragility analysis of the sign structure such as sign panel's parameters, connection component's parameters, as well as wind load parameters were presented. Fragility and compound fragility analysis showed disparity between connection component. Additionally, reinforcement of the connection system was introduced as an example of the utilization of wind fragility results in the retrofit decision making.
