  • Dendritic hyperbranched poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMA)s, whose branched architectures resemble the 'dendron' part(s) of dendrimer, were synthesized by an iterative methodology consisting of two reactions in each iteration process: (a) a coupling reaction of u-functionalized, living, anionic PMMA having two tert-butyldimethylsilyloxymethylphenyl(SMP) groups with benzyl bromide(BnBr)-chain-end-functionalized PMMA, and (b) a transformation reaction of the introduced SMP groups into BnBr functionalities. These two reactions, (a) and (b), were repeated three times to afford a series of dendron-like, hyperbranched (PMMA)s up to third generation. Three dendron-like, hyperbranched (PMMA)s different in branched architecture were also synthesized by the same iterative methodology using a low molecular weight, functionalized 1,1-diphenylalkyl anion prepared from sec-BuLi and 1,1-bis(3-tert-butyldime-thylsilyloxymethylphenyl)ethylene in the reaction step (b) in each iterative process. Furthermore, structurally similar, dendron-like, hyperbranched block copolymers could be successfully synthesized by the iterative methodology using $\alpha$-functionalized, living, anionic poly(2-(perfluorobutyl) ethyl methacrylate) (PRfMA) in addition to $\alpha$-functionalized, living PMMA. Accordingly, the resulting block copolymers were comprised of both PMMA and PRfMA segments with different sequential orders. After the block copolymers were cast into films and annealed, their surface structures were characterized by angle-dependent XPS and contact angle measurements. All three samples showed significant segregation and enrichment of PRfMA segments at the surfaces.

  • Diblock copolymers composed of poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(N,N-dimethylamino-2-ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), or methoxy polyethylene glycol(PEG), were synthesized via a combination of ring-opening polymerization and atom-transfer radical polymerization in order to prepare polymeric nanoparticles as an antifungal drug carrier. Amphotericin B (AmB), a natural antibiotic, was incorporated into the polymeric nanoparticles. The physical properties of AmB-incorporated polymeric nanoparticles with PCL-b-PDMAEMA and PCL-b-PEG were studied in relation to morphology and particle size. In the aggregation state study, AmB-incorporated PCL-b- PDMAEMA nanoparticles exhibited a monomeric state pattern of free AmB, whereas AmB-incorporated PCL-b- PEG nanoparticles displayed an aggregated pattern. In in vitro hemolysis tests with human red blood cells, AmBincorporated PCL-b-PDMAEMA nanoparticles were seen to be 10 times less cytotoxic than free AmB (5 ${\mu}g$/ml). In addition, an improved antifungal activity of AmBincorporated polymeric nanoparticles was observed through antifungal activity tests using Candida albicans, whereas polymeric nanoparticles themselves were seen not to affect activity. Finally, in vitro AmB release studies were conducted, proving the potential of AmB-incorporated PCL-b-PDMAEMA nanoparticles as a new formulation candidate for AmB.

  • This study presents a micromolding for the synthesis of Janus particles with reconfigurable shape by pH stimuli. First, we use acrylic acid (AA) as pH responsive monomer in the hydrophilic part and trimethylolpropane triacylate (TMPTA) in the hydrophobic part, respectively. The change of acidity in solvent induces the swelling of hydrophilic part in the Janus particles. The pH-responsive Janus particles show different swelling ratio of hydrophilic part in according to composition of acrylic acid in diverse range (0-70% v/v) and pH (3-11). As the concentration of acrylic acid in the hydrophilic part and environmental pH increase, the hydrophilic part in the Janus particles is proportionally swelled. Second, we fabricate novel type of Janus particles with two different hydrophilicities. As a proof of concept, we have applied acrylic acid (AA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DAEMA) into each part because the monomers provide reverse responsive activity. As expected, these Janus particles show different shape anisotropies with reconfigurable property in accordance with the polarity of each part at same acidity of environmental solvent. We envision that the stimuli responsive Janus particles have a wide application from fundamental science to diagnostic apparatus.

  • Based on our experience in developing resistive humidity sensor, interdigital gold electrodes with different fingers and gaps have been fabricated on a glass epoxy (GE) substrate using screen printing techniques. The basic structure of the electrode consisted of a 3-, 4- and 5-fingers with gaps of 310 and 460 ${\mu}m$. Gold electrode/GE was prepared by first printing silver nanopaste, followed by consecutive electroless plating of Cu, Ni and then Au. Copolymer of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (MDBAC) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was used as a humidity-sensing polyelectrolyte, which was fabricated by a screen printing method on the Au electrode/GE substrate. The flexible humidity sensor showed acceptable linearity between logarithmic impedance and relative humidity in the range of 20-95%RH, low hysteresis of 1.5%RH, good response and recovery time of 75 sec at 1 V, 1 kHz, and $25^{\circ}C$. Electrode construction had a significant influence on the humidity-sensing characteristics of polymeric humidity sensors. The activation energy between electrode and ion conducting polyelectrolyte plays an important role in explaining the differences of humidity sensing characteristics such as temperature dependence, sensitivity, linearity and hysteresis.

  • Polymer blends containing polypropylene (PP) with compatibilizers were prepared using twin screw extruder. Physical properties were investigated using universal test machine (UTM) and Izod impact tester. In the PP/acrylonitrilebutadiene-styrene (ABS) blends, mechanical strength was increased with the addition of PP-g-styrene acryloritrile (PP-g-SAN) compatibilizer, and the ductility was increased with the addition of ethylene-ethyl acrylate-maleic anhydride (E-EAMAH-g-SAN) compatibilizer. For the PP/ABS/ polycarbonate (PC)/Nylon-6,6 blends, impact strength was increased with the addition of ethylene glycidylmethacrylate (E-GMA compatibilizer) up to 0.5 phr. In the case of the PP/ABS/PC/Nylon-6,6/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/poly(oxymethylene) (POM)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVC)/poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) blends, mechanical properties were increased by the complex compatibilizing effects of PP-g-SAN, E-EA-MAH-g-SAN and E-GMA, respectively.

  • In this study, pore-filled ion exchange membranes with low membrane resistance and high hydroxide ion conductivity was developed. To improve alkali durability, a porous substrate made of polytetrafluoroethylene was used, and a copolymer was prepared using monomers 2-(dimethyl amino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and vinyl benzyl chloride (VBC) for pores. divinyl benzene (DVB) was used as the cross-linker, and ion exchange membranes were prepared for each cross-linking agent content to study the effect of the cross-linker content on DMAEMA-DVB and VBC-DMAEMA-DVB copolymers. As a result, chemical stability is improved by using a PTFE material substrate, and productivity can be increased by enabling fast photo polymerization at a low temperature by using a low-pressure UV lamp. To confirm the physical and chemical stability of the ion exchange membrane required for an anion exchange membrane fuel cell, tensile strength, and alkali resistance tests were conducted. As a result, as the cross-linking degree increased, the tensile strength increased by approximately 40 MPa, and finally, through the silver conductivity and alkali resistance tests, it was confirmed that the alkaline stability increased as the cross-linking agent increased.

  • An electrochemically and photochemically polymerizable monomer, 2-((2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b] [1,4]dioxin-2-yl)methoxy)ethyl methacrylate (EDOT-EMA), was explored for patterning of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) via side chain cross-linking. The polymer from EDOT-EMA was deposited electrochemically to produce polymeric EDOT (PEDOT-EMA), which was directly photo-patterned by UV light as the side EMA groups of PEDOT-EMA were polymerized to give cross-linked EMA (PEDOT-PEMA). Absorption and FTIR studies of the UV-exposed film (PEDOT-PEMA) indicated that the photo-patterning mainly originated from the photo cross-linking of the methacrylates in the side-chain. After irradiation of the film, the conductivity of the irradiated area decreased from $5.6{\times}10^{-3}$ S/cm to $7.2{\times}10^{-4}$ S/cm, possibly due to bending of the conductive PEDOT channel as a result of the side chain cross-linking. The patterned film was applied to a solid state electrochromic (EC) cell to obtain micro-patterned EC cells with lines up to 5 ${\mu}m$ wide.

  • Thermoresponsive polymers were successfully synthesized by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and Cu(I)-catalyzed 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azide and alkynes (click chemistry). Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) was synthesized by ATRP, followed by introduction of alkyne groups using pentynoic acid, leading to HEMA-alkyne. Homopolymers having secondary amine groups, tertiary amines with hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl groups were synthesized by adding 2-azido-N-ethyl-ethanamine, 2-[(2-azidoethyl)amino]ethanol, and 2-[(2-azidoethyl)amino]propanol, respectively, to the PHEMA-alkyne backbone using click chemistry. Molecular weight (MW), molecular weight distribution (MWD), and click reaction efficiency were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. The transmission spectra of the 1.0 wt% aqueous solutions of the resulting polymers at 650 nm were measured as a function of temperature. Results showed that the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) could be easily controlled by the length of the hydroxyalkyl groups.

  • In this study, polyurethane-acryl emulsion resins were synthesized from HDI (hexamethylene diisocyanate), IPDI (isophorone diisocyanate), Polyol, 2-HEMA (2-hydroxy ethylmethacrylate), n-BA (n-butyl acrylate) and MMA (methylmethacrylate). The effects of polyol types on the properties of polyurethane-acryl emulsion resin, such as degree of strength and water resistance and on the manufacturing process were investigated. In addition, the results were compared with those of acrylic emulsion. The test results showed that polyester type polyol demonstrated stronger tensile strength and higher water resistance with time than did acrylic emulsion and polyether type polyol.

  • The present study suggests a novel method to produce raspberry-like microparticles containing diverse functional materials inside. The raspberry-like microparticles were produced from a random assembly of uniformly-sized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles via electrospraying. The solution containing the PMMA nanoparticles were supplied through the inner nozzle and compressed air was emitted through the outer nozzle. The air supply helped fast evaporation of acetone, so it enabled copious amount of microparticles as dry powder. The microparticles were highly porous both on the surface and interiors, hence various materials with a function of UV-blocking ($TiO_2$ nanoparticles and methoxyphenyl triazine) or anti-aging (ethyl(4-(2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-5-carboxyamido) benzoate)) were loaded in large amount (17 wt % versus PMMA). The surface and interior structures of the microparticles were dependent on the characteristics of functional materials. The results clearly suggest that the process to prepare the raspberry-like microparticles can be an excellent approach to generate functional microstructures.
