The aim of this study was to investigate in an in vivo model the effects of ethanol extract and ethyl ether and ethyl acetate fractions of Sedum sarmentosum Bunge (SS). To investigate the effects of ethanol extract and ethyl ether and ethyl acetate fractions, Sprage-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to groups as follows : Sham, OVX-control and ovariectomized rats supplemented with SS at 50 mg/kg bw/day, with SS at 100 mg/kg bw/day, with SS at 200 mg/kg bw/day, with ethyl ether fraction of SS at 10 mg/ka bw/day and with ethyl acetate fraction of SS at 10 mg/kg bw/day. Food intake and food efficiency ratio were not significantly different in groups. But body weight gain was decreased by supplementation of ethyl acetate fraction of SS compared to OVX-control. The levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride in serum were higher in ovariectomized control rats than Sham-operated rats, but supplementation of SS ethanol extracts at 200 mg/kg bw/day decreased the level of the lipid in serum. The level of HDL-cholesterol in serum increased by supplementation of SS ethanol extracts at 200 mg/kg bw/day (p<0.01). The levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride in serum were decreased by supplementation of ethyl acetate fraction of SS (p<0.01). On the other hand, the level of HDL-cholesterol in serum was increased by supplementation of ethyl acetate fraction of SS (p<0.05). On conclusion, it might be expected that ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction of SS is believed to be a possible protective effects for the fatty serum increasing serum lipid.

Background: The present study was carried out to asses whether mulberry leaves (MLs) have the potential to inhibit the mutagenic effect of cigarette smoke condensates (CSCs). Methods and Results: ML powder was extracted with 70% ethanol, and a yield of 35.1% by weight was obtained. The 70% ethanol extract of ML was further extracted sequentially using diethyl ether, chloroform, butanol, dichloromethane and water. The crude 70% ethanol extract of MLs and its solvent fractions did not show any mutagenic effect when tested at concentrations up to 1 mg/plate against Salmonella typhimurium TA98. In contrast, the crude 70% ethanol extract showed an inhibitory activity against the mutagenicity of CSCs in the presence of S-9 mixture. Among the solvent fractions, the diethyl ether fraction showed the highest inhibitory activity, which increased in a dose-dependent manner, inhibiting mutagenesis by approximately 97.1% at a concentration of 1 mg/plate. Conclusions: In this study, we found that a crude 70% ethanol extract of MLs and the diethyl ether fraction themselves are potentially not mutagenic, but inhibit the mutagenic effect of CSCs.
The present study was carried out to investigate the antioxidative effect of ginger extracts on fish oil. The changes of sardine oil with and without ginger extract were estimated by periodically measuring peroxide value (POV), thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, weighing method, acid value (AV) and fatty acid composition. The results obtained are summarized as follow : The POV of sardine oil by $80\%$ ethanol extract and fat soluble fraction obtained from ginger during storage was rapidly increased after 10 days, while water soluble fraction was slowly increased during storage for 25 days. TBA value of sardine oil by water soluble fraction was appeared to increase slowly until 10 days, but that of $80\%$ ethanol extract and fat soluble fraction was remarkably increased in early stages of storage. The weighing change of sardine oil by $80\%$ ethanol extract and fat soluble fraction were shown $3.5\%\;and\;1.7\%$ for 15 days, but by water soluble fraction was marked $0.5\%$ of weight gain. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in polyunsaturated fatty acid of sardine oil during storage markedly decreased, but by the addition of each fraction of ginger extracts, the oxidative degradation of DHA was effectively inhibited, of which water soluble fraction was most effective.
The present study was undertaken to investigate the possible effect of ginseng butanol fraction on the hepatic acetaldehyde metabolism. Experimental animals were used for the subject of the study. When, in case of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (Ald DH), ginseng butanol fraction was added, enzyme activity was increased in a small dose, while, in a large dose, it showed inhibitory effect. In terms of kinetic aspect, ginseng butanol fraction has the effect to decrease the Km values of Ald DH. In vivo studies, the activity of Aid DH increased by induction of acute intoxication of ethanol was further increased through pretreatment with ginseng butanol fraction. When ginseng butanol fraction was given to mice fed with 5% ethanol instead of water for 60 days, the activity of Ald DH in mitochondrial fraction decreased to about 35% in chronic alcoholism, but after pretreatment of ginseng butanol fraction the activity was restored to the control level. By the pretreatment with disulfiram, the Ald DH activity was inhibited in normal and alcohol-treated groups, but after the treatment with ginseng butanol fraction the activity was restored to the control level. The results suggest that ginseng butanol fraction enhance the Ald DH activity inhibited by the treatment of disulfiram with no relation to NAD. It was observed that ginseng butanol fraction markedly decrease the acetaldehyde levels in plasma and liver. All these observations suggested that reduction of acetaldehyde in blood and liver should be dependent upon increased activity of mitochonclrial Ald DH. It is concluded that the recovery from alcohol intoxication should be prompted by treatment with ginseng.

From the 80% ethanol extraction of onion flesh, fraction I,II and III were separated by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Fraction II and III had a high inhibitory effect on ACE and xanthine oxidase. The ACE was about 80% at 50 ppm of fraction IIand III. The xanthine oxidase was about 82.5% at 100 ppm of fraction In. This research was studied to investigate the effects of the fraction In isolated from onion on the reduction of fat accumulation in rats fed high fat diet for 2 months. The metabolism was examined by analyzing the fat in serum and liver. It was shown that cholesterol in serum was remarkably reduced in onion fraction In as compared with those of control.

Rubus coreanus Miquel (RCM), also known as Korean blackberry or bokbunja, is used as a South Korean traditional medicine to treat acne and inflammatory skin conditions. The antimicrobial activity of RCM root and its active compounds remain unclear. In this study, we prepared a 50% ethanol fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and acid-treated ethyl acetate fraction (aglycone fraction) of RCM root, and evaluated antibacterial activities against the skin pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas acnes, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In a paper disc assay, all fractions of RCM root showed antimicrobial activities against the five skin pathogens. The ethyl acetate fraction displayed 6-, 12-, and 2-fold higher minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) than the 50% ethanol fraction against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. acnes, respectively. The aglycone fraction displayed 2-fold higher MIC than methyl paraben against P. acnes, S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. The ethyl acetate fraction displayed a minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) similar to that of methyl paraben, and the aglycone fraction showed 2- to 4-fold higher MBCs than those of methyl paraben. In particular, the ethyl acetate fraction was not cytotoxic and showed thermal stability after incubation at high temperatures ($60-121^{\circ}C$). Finally, the ethyl acetate fraction was separated and four components were identified: procyanidin C, propelagonidin dimer, ellagic acid, and methyl ellagic acid acetyl pentose. The compounds showed high antibacterial activities. These results suggest that RCM root is potentially applicable as a natural preservative in cosmetics.

We studied the antioxidant activity of Suaedajaponica, found in Korean mud flats. A 70% ethanol extraction yielded 9.74%. The 70% ethanol extract was further fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water. The water fraction resulted in the highest extraction yields, but the ethyl acetate fraction resulted in the highest total phenol content and also total flavonoid content. The antioxidative activity of the fractions was evaluated using several methods and compared to commercial antioxidants. The scavenging activities of the hydroxyl radical, hydrogen radical, hydrogen peroxide, and xanthine oxidase of the ethyl acetate fraction were equivalent to that of BHA. The scavenging activities of the hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, and xanthine oxidase of the ethanol extracts were approximately 80~90% of that of BHA.
The rates of solvolysis for p-nitrobenzyl chloride have been measured by the electric conductivity method in aqueous ethanol from 0.0 to 0. 5 mole fraction of ethanol under various pressures up to 1200bar at 50 and $60{\circ}C$. The activation parameters, ${\Delta}V_\0^{\neq},\ {\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ are evaluated from the rate constants. The results indicated that ${\Delta}V_\0^{\neq}$ exhibits an extremum behaviors near 0.3 mole fraction of ethanol and ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ near 0.1 mole fraction of ethanol. This behaviors are discussed in terms of solvent structure variation and the pressure dependences of ${\Delta}H^{\neq},\ {\Delta}H^{\neq}$ and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ are also discussed individually. The signs of the pressure dependence of ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ are shown to be consistent with those required by the Maxwell relationships for classical thermodynamic systems.
The present study was conducted to investigate antioxidant, nitrite scavenging and alcohol degradation effects of extracts from leaf and fruit stalk of Hovenia dulcis. Yields of various solvent extracts for Hovenia dulcis leaf and fruit stalk of were higher in water and methanol extract layer, respectively. Ethanol extracts of Hovenia dulcis leaf and fruit stalk of were fractionated with different solvents such as hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and water, yields of water fraction were highest. In the solvent extracts using methanol, ethanol, hexane, chloroform and water, ethanol extracts showed the most effective antioxidant and nitrite-scavenging effects. Ethanol extracts from Hovenia dulcis leaf and fruit stalk of were fractionated, the most natioxidant and nitrite-scavenging effects were ethyl acetate fraction. Alcohol degradation effects from different parts of Hovenia dulcis showed higher leaf and fruit stalk than xylem, branch and seed. Alcohol degradation effects from leaf and fruit stalk increased as time passed.
This study was designed to examine the effects of fractions of ethanol extract of Benincasa hispida (wax gourd) on hepatic antioxidative status in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were induced diabetes mellitus by STZ injection (45 mg/kg) into the tail vein and were divided into 5 groups: normal, STZ-control, three experimental diabetic groups. Fractions of ethanol extract of Benincasa hispida were administered orally into the diabetic rats for 14 days. Hepatic glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) activity (determined with H$_2$O$_2$ as substrate) was increased in the groups supplemented with chloroform (CHCl$_3$) and butanol (BuOH) fractions. Glutathione peroxidase (GR) activity in the liver cytosol of H$_2$O fraction groups was significantly lower than that of STZ-control group. The H$_{2}$O fraction supplemented group has been shown the notably decrease in the hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The hepatic cytosol catalase (CAT) activity was significant decreased by the supplementation with BuOH fraction. It was found from the results that the supplementation of BuOH and H$_2$O fractions of Benincasa hispida extract could be beneficial for the diabetic complications and damages from the lipid peroxidation.
