Heterogeneity-aware Energy-efficient Clustering (HEC) Technique for WSNs

  • Efficient energy consumption in WSN is one of the key design issues for improving network stability period. In this paper, we propose a new Heterogeneity-aware Energy-efficient Clustering (HEC) technique which considers two types of heterogeneity - network lifetime and of sensor nodes. Selection of cluster head nodes is done based on the three network lifetime phases: only advanced nodes are allowed to become cluster heads in the initial phase; in the second active phase all nodes are allowed to participate in cluster head selection process with equal probability, and in the last dying out phase, clustering is relaxed by allowing direct transmission. Simulation-based performance analysis of the proposed technique as compared to other relevant techniques shows that HEC achieves longer stable region, improved throughput, and better energy dissipation owing to judicious consumption of additional energy of advanced nodes. On an average, the improvement observed for stability period over LEACH, SEP, FAIR and HEC- with SEP protocols is around 65%, 30%, 15% and 17% respectively. Further, the scalability of proposed technique is tested by varying the field size and number of sensing nodes. The results obtained are found to be quite optimistic. The impact of energy heterogeneity has also been assessed and it is found to improve the stability period though only upto a certain extent.

Changes in Credit Attitudes among US Consumers: 1992-2004

  • Previous studies showed that traditional attitudes toward consumer credit and the accumulation of debtare declining, especially among younger life stage groups. The social stigma of high debt levels has largely gone. However, only a few researchers have studied and changes in consumers' attitudes toward credit and its determinants. This study investigates factors related to the probability of respondents having favorable or unfavorable attitudes using the 1992-2004 U.S. Surveys of Consumer Finances. A logistic analysis was used since the dependent variables were binary. All other things equal, respondents in 1995, 1998, 2001 and 2004 were significantly less likely to have favorable or unfavorable attitudes toward credit than otherwise similar respondents in 1992, but the patterns did not correspond well to the changes in the bankruptcy rate. Black and Hispanic respondents were more likely to have favorable attitudes and less likely to have unfavorable attitudes than were otherwise similar white respondents, but those in the Other group, mostly Asians, were not significantly different from whites. Respondents with college degrees were less likely to have a positive attitude and more likely to have a negative attitude than those without a college degree. Respondents who took risks with investments were more likely to have a positive attitude and less likely to have a negative attitude than those unwilling to take risks.   • Based on the performance of a cooperative diversity with selection combining in Rayleigh fading, the power control range of a relay node is investigated. Also the effect of the power-limited relay node to the system performance is investigated. If the average signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of each signal path is equal, the single relay cooperative diversity is obtained 13.5dB gain at the outage probability of $1{\times}10^{-3}$ in Rayleigh fading. We noticed that the limited power of a relay node severely degrades the system performance. Therefore the node with limited power in ad-hoc network is not recommended as a relay node in cooperative diversity system.

  • We demonstrate a fashion of quantum channel combining and splitting, called polar quantum channel coding, to generate a quantum bit (qubit) sequence that achieves the symmetric capacity for any given binary input discrete quantum channels. The present capacity is achievable subject to input of arbitrary qubits with equal probability. The polarizing quantum channels can be well-conditioned for quantum error-correction coding, which transmits partially quantum data through some channels at rate one with the symmetric capacity near one but at rate zero through others.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed which distributes multicast cells in a copy network. The dual copy network is composed of running adder network, distributor, dummy address encoder, and broadcasting network. It is operated lower input address and higher one simultaneously by the distribution algorithm. As a result, for each input has a better equal opportunity of processing, cell delay and hardware complexity are reduced in copy network. Also, for it adopts the broadcasting network from an expansion Banyan network with binary tree and Banyan network, overflow probability is reduced to a half in that network. As a result of computer simulation, the copy network processed by the distribution algorithm is remarkably improved in cell delay of input buffer according to all input loads.

A Study on the Size and Shape Pattern Normalization of Hand-Written Hangul Patterns (필기체 한글문자의 크기 및 형태정규화에 관한 연구)

  • This paper proposes a new method for the normalization of shape pattern based on Gaussian probability density function to increase automatic recognition rate of hand-written Hangul pattern. The sizes of hand-written Hangul pattern are detected from the input images, and pattern sizes are normalized by two variables interpolation. The pattrn shapes are noralized by letting correlation coefficients equal to zero. It is analyzed theoretically and verified through computer simulation for the relation between input image and normaized shape pattern. It is confirmed that this method is effective and reasonable for deformed hand-written Hangul pattern. Experimental resu results show that the declination. size and stroke width of hand-written Hangul patterns are mych improved.

  • A network with variable link capacities is considered to be in a functioning state if it can transmit a maximum flow which is greater than or equal to a specified amount of flow. The links are independent and either function or fail with known probability. No flow can be transmitted through a failed link. In this paper, we consider the measures of importance of a link in such networks. We define the structural importance and reliability importance, with respect to capacity, of a link when the required amount of flow is given. We also present the performance importance with respect to capacity. Numerical examples are presented as well for illustrative purpose.

  • Whenever planning a study design or preparing a research proposal it is highly recommended that investigators decide the optimum sample size that is required to yield an outcome of interest with a predetermined level of precision. This is because that, all else being equal, if a study with less than the optimum sample size would not detect the significance of differences in reality, and similarly, if a study with more than the optimum sample size will be costly. For these reasons, the majority of peer reviewed biomedical journals assess the adequacy of sample size requirements. The calculated sample size is used as a target number of samples to be collected to provide an estimate of the parameter with the desired and predetermined level of accuracy, and the sample size is a major determinant of the probability of detecting diseased animals from the population. There is no single method of calculating sample size for any given study design. In this context, the purpose of this article is to provide a collection of formulas and examples for some typical situations likely to be encountered in veterinary clinical practice and to highlight the importance of performing prospective sample size calculations when planning a research. Specifically, this paper is concerned with the basic principle of sample size calculation, and considerations for methodological applications were illustrated for a given data set. Also included in this paper is factors influencing sample size calculations using a statistically valid techniques. Appropriate methods to consider these factors are presented.

Approximate Analysis of MAC Protocol with Multiple Self-tokens in a Slotted Ring

  • Ring networks are very commonly exploited among local area and metropolitan area networks (LAN/MAN), whereas cells or small fixed-size packets are widely used in synchronized ring networks. In this paper, we present an analytical method for evaluating the delay-throughput performance of a MAC protocol with multiple self-tokens in a slotted ring network under uniform traffic. In our analysis, we introduce the stationary probability, which indicates the number of packets in a node. Also, it is assumed that each node has a sufficiently large amount of self-tokens, and a slotted ring has the symmetry. The analytical results with respect to delay-throughput performance have similar values to computer simulated ones. Furthermore, in order to achieve fair access under non-uniform traffic, we propose an adaptive MAC protocol, where the number of self-tokens in a node dynamically varies, based on the number of packets transmitted within a specified period. In the proposed protocol, when the number of packets transmitted by a node within a specified period is larger than a specified threshold, the node decreases the number of self-tokens in a per-node distributed method. That results in creating free slots in the ring, thus all nodes can obtain an equal opportunity to transmit into the ring. Performance results obtained by computer simulation show that our proposed protocol can maintain throughput fairness under non-uniform traffic.

An Analysis of Seismic Risk of Seoul Area(I) (서울 수도권 일원의 지진위험 분석(I))

  • The probabilistic seismic risk in Seoul Metropolitan Area $(atitude도 37.0^{circ}~37.8^{circ} N, longitude 126.5^{circ}~127.5^{circ} E)$ based on all Korean earthquake data of MM Intensity equal to or greater than V is evaluated by point source method. The seismic risk estimated from all data turned out to be lower than that from the data since the Choseon Dynasty during which seismic data appear to be rather complete. The damaging earthquake of peak horizontal ground acceleration greater than 0.1g turns out to occur with 90% probability of being exceeded in 200 years and 500 years when the data since Choseon Dynasty and all data are used, respectively.
