Second, they had a little chance to have the educational training for the water environment education. Third, the water environment education at schools has been made in very restricted areas such as water related scientific knowledge and water pollution. Fourth, teachers pointed out the biggest obstacle for the water environment education would be the lack of teaching materials and the second biggest one was the lack of educational facilities at schools. Based on the survey results, it was found out that in order to improve the water environment education at schools, substantial research by the teachers shall be implemented for all teachers of every subject to build up their capacity in adapting the water education to their subjects.

  • Recently, indoor air quality (IAQ) in workplace, residential environments and schools has been concerned of people, scientists and related the public, and has recognized the health effects related to indoor air pollution. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the characteristics of IAQ in 55 kindergartens, elementary school, middle schools, and high schools from June, 2004 to May, 2005 in Korea. We measured indoor air pollutants($PM_{10},\;CO_2$, HCHO, total bacteria colony(TBC), CO, radon, TVOCs, asbestos, and $O_3$), and physical factors(noise, temperature, relative humidity, and illumination) with necessary of management for IAQ in school. We classified into 5 kinds of the school by period since building completion, <1 year, 1-3 years, 3-5 years, and 5-10 years. The concentration of pollutants and the level of physical factors compared with standards and guidelines of IAQ on the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development. The major results obtained from this study were as follows. Temperature, relative humidity and illumination among the physical factors did not exceed the standards, but noise exceeded it. Asbestos and $O_3$ did not detect in surveyed classrooms. CO, TBC, TVOCs, and HCHO in kindergartens, TBC in elementary schools, TBC, TVOCs dnd HCHO in middle schools, and HCHO in high schools detected the standards. This study is conducted as a part of efforts to provide a foundational data for further relative researches on management of IAQ of school. Therefore, we suggest that country plan for management of IAQ in school should be established through long-term and continuous investigation for assessment on IAQ in school and health risk assessment for students.

  • This study was initiated to understand what students know, how they feel, and how they act in the perspectives of environmental literacy. This study takes it a very serious problem that there has been no data about Korean students’status of environmental literacy so far. Based on the correct diagnosis of Korean students’ environmental literacy, environmental education in Korea, including national curriculum, teaching materials and strategy, would take the right way. This study accepts Simmon (1995)’s framework of environmental literacy, consisting of 5 areas, environmental knowledge, skills, affect, and behavior, which is consistent with general goals of environmental education. This study analyzed the relationship between areas in environmental literacy and factors contributing to improving students’ environmental literacy. This study also checked which factors, including age, gender, parents’ schooling, environmental education in schools, and students’ science-related attributes, contributed to improving students’ environmental literacy. The results of this study will help science educators keep in mind how important it is to teach science from the perspectives of environmental literacy.

The teachers with more age and educational experience showed higher level of environmental education performance. The teachers with more chances for getting environmental information had relatively higher level of environmental knowledge. The teachers with more educational experience and chance for getting environmental information and pro-environment community had relatively higher level of environmental education performance. With regard to environmental education experience older teachers getting environmental information pro-environment community and the teachers with higher level of environmental consciousness practiced more. • The purpose of this study was to review the research trends in school environmental education. We analyzed 383 research papers that specifically focused on the school context which were 66% of the total number (N=577) published in this journal between 1990~2011. We defined the characteristics of review and developed a review method by examining previous review studies in this area. The review framework for school environmental education research was devised in terms of seven research areas: 1) Theories and objectives of school environmental education, 2) Environmental awareness, attitude and behavior, 3) Current issues in environmental education in the school context, 4) Instructions and programs, 5) National Curriculum, 6) Environmental education contents, and 7) Teacher professionalism. In this paper, we present dominant features within each category with focus on the overall trends of research methods and themes. Finally, we discuss research issues emerging out of the empirical analysis for considering the value of research for enhancing the quality of environmental education in schools.

  • As recognition and polices for plans to preserve natural resources and to develop environment-friendly space in school education is developed, not only organization of curriculums related to these is required but also facilities for the education are indispensable. Therefore, this study tries to suggest several standards on matters including kinds and scale of facilities and the introduction of species by facilities required for outdoor teaming spaces for environmental education in the elementary school system. The methods of this study include researching various records related to environmental education in elementary school, researching the present condition of outdoor learning space installed and operating in the existing schools by making an on-the-spot survey, and analyzing appearance frequencies of plants and animals displayed in the text. In addition, the actual conditions of the facility use and management were investigate through a questionnaire, We chose and diagrammed a model of the installed facilities by putting the results together. For analyses the investigated eight schools, were categorized as ‘facilities-arranged type’or ‘connection type with ecological park’. The first type distributed and arranged facilities, including meteorological observatory, rocky park, experience-learning area, ecological pond, animal-breeding farm and field-leaning area into appropriate locations according to the site conditions of the school while the second type created a natural learning place by integrating several facilities and arranging areas such as an animal-breeding farm and experience-learning area into appropriate sites. In this study, essential facilities for outdoor learning are classified into ecological park, experience-loaming area, field loaming area, and for natural learning, meteorological observatory, animal-breeding farm, and greenhouse.
