  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag to the development of the Powdered Ready-mixed Shotcrete. First of all, after accomplishing SEM analysis and Leaching Test, the laboratory and field experiments for evaluating the utility of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag were performed. As a result of SEM and Leaching test, the environmental stability was confirmed. That is, non-detection of harmful lists and dense shotcrete structure result from mixing Granulated Blast Furnace Slag. As a result of lab. and field test, Blast Furnace Slag is superior to Plain Batch in improving strength and durability. And it will be able to improve to some extent the problem caused by the delayed reaction of existing Granulated Blast Furnace Slag with alkali activated material. Also the proper amount of Granulated Blast Furnace Slag is estimated to be under 30%. Finally, it is possible that Granulated Blast Furnace Slag can apply to economical recycling and development of the Ready-mixed Shotcrete for its price is only about 5% of Silica-finne's price.

  • At the mudstone slope located on the roadside of the Seokri area in Donghae-myeon, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this study was performed to analyze the effects of rainfall on the stability of slope through seepage analysis according to the precipitation type of the mudstone slope, referring to the actual case of slope failure. For this, precise geological survey, geophysical exploration and drilling survey for the slope where the failure occurred were performed and followed by analysis of detailed soil layer. For the section where failure surface located, the durability reduction of rocks was measured through slaking/swelling tests and the permeability was measured through in-situ permeability tests for each soil layer. In addition, the change of strength parameter and process of instability were analyzed by back analysis, using Talren 97 and Slope/W programs, in the slope. By applying different precipitation conditions to the geographical conditions of the slope that had actual failure records, the slope stability was analyzed by seepage analysis according to duration of rainfall and rise of groundwater level resulting from the flow of rainfall caused by development of geological structures and the slope surface condition.

  • Concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer tubes are often used for marine structures with the benefit of good durability and high resistance against corrosion under severe chemical environment. Current research presents results of a comprehensive experimental investigation on the behavior of axially loaded circular concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer tubes. This paper is intended to examine several aspects related to the usage of glass fiber fabrics and filament wound layers used for outer shell of piles subjected to axial compression. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of filament winding angle of glass fiber layers (2) to evaluate the effect of number of GFRP layers on the ultimate load and ductility of confined concrete (3) to evaluate the effect of loading condition of specimens on the effectiveness of confinement and failure characteristics as well, and (4) to propose a analytical model which describes the stress-strain behavior of the confined concrete. Three different types of glass fiber layers were chosen; fabric layer, ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ filament winding layer, and ${\pm}85^{\circ}$ filament winding layer. They were put together or used independently in the fabrication of tubes. Specimens that have various L:D ratios and different diameters have also been tested. Totally 27 GFRP tube specimens to investigate the tension capacity, and 66 concrete-filled GFRP tube specimens for compression test were prepared and tested. The behavior of the specimens in the axial and transverse directions, failure types were investigated. Analytical model and parameters were suggested to describe the stress-strain behavior of concrete under confinement.

  • For highway concrete structures, the deterioration of the structure is accelerated due to the increase in the use of deicing materials, and sectional repair work is being frequently carried out to restore performance. However, after the repair work, re-damage such as cracks, delamination, and poor bond performance is exhibited in the repaired sectional area. In this study, overseas repair material requirements were first analyzed, and present domestic requirements were improved repair material performance through field surveys of common concrete structures, laboratory experiments, and test construction on a disused concrete bridge. In addition, performancebased quality requirements were presented so that all materials that meet the required performance can be applied, and different test methods for each material were unified into concrete test methods for consistent test results analysis. The considered performance requirements were compression strength, bending strength, and bond strength for structural properties, and length change rate, crack resistance, thermal expansion coefficient, and elasticity coefficient were for dimensional behavior. For resistance to chloride penetration resistance and freeze-thaw resistance were presented as durability. The proposed requirements for concrete repair materials are expected to contribute to the improvement of the quality of concrete sectional repair work in Korea.

  • It is well known that cracks in concrete decrease permeability and durability of concrete because cracks enhance the penetration of water or corrosive chemicals like as chlorides, carbon dioxides, sulfates and some others. But some of cracks in hardened cements may be sealed in case of contacting water. This phenomenon is called "self healing" and it has a close relation to hydration products newly formed on surfaces of cracks. Many studies on self healing in concretes commonly showed that CSH gel has been observed on crack surfaces. And some studies have reported that calcium hydroxides and ettringite were observed as well as CSH gel on crack surfaces. This study was carried out to investigate hydration products formed by self healing process and also examine the influence of waterproof admixture for concretes on self healing of cement. As a result of XRD, DSC, SEM and EDX analysis of crack surfaces, it was found that self healing of cement was related to CSH gel, calcium hydroxides and ettringite. And waterproof admixture increased fibrous (needle-like) hydration products which were in network form. It is estimated that such fibrous products are effective for self healing process of cement system.

  • The strength standard of shotcrete in Korea is relatively lower than that in Europe where high-strength shotcrete has been developed and actively applied to the common practice, so it is hard to test a quality of high-strength shotcrete. In this study, field test was performed to find a solution improving the strength and a long-term durability on domestic shotcrete. In field test, a high-strength shotcrete was produced using high-quality additions and accelerators, and an effect of additions and accelerators was observed. In addition, quality test based on EFNARC was also performed. As a result of field test, a promotion ratio of early strength is 90~97% in case of using alkali-free accelerators, therefore, alkali-free accelerators had an effect on an increase of early strength on shotcrete. A compressive strength of shotcrete using Micro-silica fume was 45.2~55.8MPa and flexible strength was 5.01~6.66MPa, so a promotion ratio of strength was 37~79%, 17~61% respectively. It was showed that increment effect of strength by the silica fume replacement of 7.5~10% for cement mass was remarkable. As a result of test, it was possible to apply high-strength shotcrete to the domestic practice using high-quality additions such as Micro-silica fume and accelerators such as alkali-free.

  • Bridge deck is directly influenced by environment and vehicle load, it is easily damaged so that it requires an appropriate repair and retrofit. Therefore, developing a bridge deck with high durability is necessary in order to minimize the maintenance of bridge deck and use it to its design life. In this study, static test was carried out to evaluate a fatigue capacity of steel-concrete composite deck, which was newly developed by supplementing problems of existing reinforced concrete deck. Based on results from the static test, fatigue load was decided, and fatigue test was conducted under the constant amplitude repeated load. From the fatigue tests, the S-N curve regarding principle structural details of composite deck was made, and characteristics of fatigue behavior was estimated by comparing and evaluating it with fatigue design criteria. In addition, fatigue design guideline was presented. As a result, it is found that each structural details of composite deck proposed by this study, such as upper flange of corrugated steel plate and middle section of it, shear connector and lower flange of corrugated steel plate, is satisfying the fatigue strength.

  • Recently, NDTs (Non-Destructive Techniques) using infrared camera are widely studied for detection of damage and void in RC (reinforced concrete) structures and they are also considered as an effective techniques for maintenance of infrastructures. The temperature on concrete surface depends on material and thermal properties such as specific heat, thermal conductivity, and thermal diffusion coefficient. Different porosity on cement mortar due to different mixture proportions can show different heat behavior in cooling stage. The porosity can affect physical and durability properties like strength and chloride diffusion coefficient as well. In this paper, active thermography which uses flash for heat induction is utilized and thermal characteristics on surface are evaluated. Samples of cement mortar with W/C (water to cement ratio) of 0.55 and 0.65 are prepared and physical properties like porosity, compressive strength, and chloride diffusion coefficient are evaluated. Then infrared thermography technique is carried out in a constant room condition (temperature $20{\sim}22^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity 55-60%). The mortar samples with higher porosity shows higher residual temperature at the cooling stage and also shows reduced critical time which shows constant temperature due to back wall effect. Furthermore, simple equation for critical time of back wall effect is suggested with porosity and experimental constants. These characteristics indicate the applicability of infrared thermography as an NDT for quality assessment of cement based composite like concrete. Physical properties and thermal behavior in cement mortar with different porosity are analyzed in discussed in this paper.

  • Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have been attracting attention as energy conversion devices that can directly supply methanol liquid fuel without a fuel reforming process. The commercial polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) currently applied to DMFC are perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer-based PEMs, which exhibit high proton conductivity and physicochemical stability during the operation. However, problems such as high methanol permeability and environmental pollutants generated during decomposition require the development of PEMs for DMFCs using novel ionomers. Recently, studies have been reported to develop PEMs using hydrocarbon-based ionomers that exhibit low fuel permeability and high physicochemical stability. This review introduces the following studies on hydrocarbon-based PEMs for DMFC applications: 1) synthesis of grafting copolymers that exhibit distinct hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase-separated structure to improve both proton conductivity and methanol selectivity, 2) introduction of cross-linked structure during PEM fabrication to reduce the methanol permeability and improve dimensional stability, and 3) incorporation of organic/inorganic composites or reinforcing substrates to develop reinforced composite membranes showing improved PEM performances and durability.

  • State assessment of an operational tunnel is usually done by performing visual inspection and durability tests by following the detailed guideline for safety inspection (SI) and/ or precision inspection for safety and diagnosis (PISD). In this study, 12 NATM tunnels, which have been operational for more than 10 years, were inspected to figure out the cause of longitudinal cracks for the purpose of modifying the scoring items in the state assessment NATM tunnel related to the longitudinal crack and the thickness of concrete lining. All investigated tunnels were classified into four groups depending on the shape and usage of each tunnel. The causes of longitudinal crack occurrence were analyzed by investigating the correlations between the longitudinal crack and the following four factors: the patterns of ground excavation; construction state of primary support system; characteristics of material properties of the concrete lining; and thickness of lining which was obtained by Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) tests. It was found that influencing factors causing longitudinal cracks in the lining were closely related with the construction condition of the primary support system, i.e. shotcrete, rockbolt, and steel-rib; crack occurrences were not much affected by the excavation patterns. As for the properties of concrete lining materials, occurrence of the longitudinal crack was mostly affected by the following three items: w/c ratio; contents of cement; and strength of lining. When estimating the lining thickness of the concrete lining by GPR tests and taking thickness effect into account in the statement assessment, it was concluded that increase of the index score by an average of 0.03 (ranging from 0.01 up to 0.071) is needed; a more realistic way of state assessment should be proposed in which the increased index score caused by lack of lining thickness should be taken into account.
