  • Genetic engineering, which was started by the E. coli gene manipulation, has led to rapid development in all area of life sciences. Recently, genetic engineering, which is an insertion or a removal technique of a specific gene on chromosomes, has been established and is usefully available in the applied life sciences including medicine and agriculture. In this review, we briefly explain pest management focusing on Release of Insects carrying a Dominant Lethal (RIDL) that is a highly economic and environment-friendly method of biological pest control. Although at present RIDL confronts many difficulties in applying directly in fields, it will be one of the best methods for the pest management in the near future without pesticides and disturbing ecosystem by the continued development of genetic engineering. However, these powerful techniques must be considered with great care to avoid harm to ecosystem.

  • A gasification process with pre-combustion $CO_2$ capture process, which converts coal into environment-friendly synthetic gas, might be promising option for sustainable energy conversion. In the coal gasification for power generation, coal is converted into $H_2$, CO and $CO_2$. To reduce the cost of $CO_2$ capture and to maximize hydrogen production, the removal of CO and the additional production of hydrogen might be needed. In this study, a 2l/min water gas shift system for a coal gasifier has been studied. To control the concentration of major components such as $H_2$, CO, and $CO_2$, MFCs were used in experimental apparatus. The gas concentration in these experiments was equal with syngas concentration from dry coal gasifiers ($H_2$: 25-35, CO: 60-65, $CO_2$: 5-15 vol%). The operation conditions of the WGS system were $200-400^{\circ}C$, 1-10bar. Steam/Carbon ratios were between 2.0 and 5.0. The commercial catalysts were used in the high temperature shift reactor and the low temperature shift reactor. As steam/carbon ratio increased, the conversion (1-$CO_{out}/CO_{in}$) increased from 93% to 97% at the condition of CO: 65, $H_2$: 30, $CO_2$: 5%. However the conversion decreased with increasing of gas flow and temperature. The gas concentration from LTS was $H_2$: 54.7-60.0, $CO_2$: 38.8-44.9, CO: 0.3-1%.

  • Lime was the solidifier mostly used at the fields of construction and civil works in the past. however, the development of Portland cement remarkably reduced the use of it. Recently as the concernment on circumstances gets higher, lime wined attention again as an eco-friendly material and was used at earth-using construction. This study examined the physical and chemical capacity of lime complexes with lime capacity improved, and performed fundamental study on the way to concretize by mixing it with earth. As a result, lime complex pressure strength was lower than cement pressure strength but it showed the possibility that its strength was improved by W/B control. The measurement of XRD after paste formation confirmed a compound generated by the reaction of Ca2+ion and Si, Al, and Fe from pozzolan reaction. A earth wall experiment by using lime complexes and earth showed that the higher, WB or the lower the quantity of unit combined materials, the lower the pressure strength was. The maximum pressure strength was maximum 11MPa when the quantity of unit combined materials was 450. It is because the composed earth particles had a high content of micro powder less than silt, so a lot of combination are demanded to secure fluidity. As a result of peptization experiment, after hardening, the material was not dissolved, which informed of the possibility of use as an outer subsidiary material. If the material is hardened by mold formation method, natural hardening crack appears. Cast expresses smart surface quality and enables to design for multiple purpose. The result shows the possibility of construction of low-story structures by using earth wall made of lime complexes and earth.

  • Recently, the LED(Light Emitting Diode) replacing incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent light has great attentions as a most promising candidate for the next generation lighting source due to its environment-friendly characteristics, long life and excellent efficiency. Moreover, since it is a semiconductor device which can convert the electric energy to visible light at a very high speed, it can also used as a communication device. Therefore, the VLC(Visible Light Communication) using the LED can perform the near field communication and lighting function at the same time without additional expenses. However, since the switching device of the conventional LED driver for VLC is operated in the linear region, there exist several drawbacks such as a poor power conversion efficiency and serious heat generation. On the other hand, since the proposed driver is operated in the on/off switching region, it features a higher efficiency and more improved heat generation. To verify the validity of the proposed LED driver, experimental results from a prototype of 20W rated LED driver applied to 3MHz bps broadcasting audio system are given.

  • Recently, the LED(Light Emitting Diode) is expected to replace conventional lamps including incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps for some general illumination application, due to some obvious features such as high luminous efficiency, safety, long life, environment-friendly characteristics and so on. To drive the LED, a single stage PFC(Power Factor Correction) flyback converter has been adopted to satisfy the isolation, PFC and low cost. The conventional flyback LED driver has the serious disadvantage of high 120Hz output current ripple caused by the PFC operation. To overcome this drawback, a new PFC flyback with low 120Hz output current ripple is proposed in this paper. It is composed of 2 power stages, the DCM(Discontinuous Conduction Mode) flyback converter for PFC and BCM(Boundary Conduction Mode) boost converter for tightly regulated LED current. Since the link capacitor is located in the secondary side, its voltage stress is small. Moreover, since the driver is composed of 2 power stages, small output filter and link capacitor can be used. Especially, since the flyback is operated at DCM, the PFC can be automatically obtained and thus, an additional PFC IC is not necessary. Therefore, only one control IC for BCM boost converter is required. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a prototype of 24W LED driver are presented.

  • In this paper we have studied about the interconnection technology between tablet device and interactive white board(IWB) system. For this study we have implemented the board writing software for both tablet device and interactive white board system which has contents management, page turning and basic writing functions. Then we defined the data format to communicate the control information and board writing information between two devices, and implemented the communication module for the real-time bidirectional communication by using the Socket programming. The page turning or writing information on tablet device were transferred to the IWB system in real-time and vice versa. From the result of performance test based on the error rate, latency time and communication coverage we derived that our implementation software has good performance between tablet device and IWB system. Also from the result of field test we proved that our solution is well suitable to use in real education environment.

  • Cyclic AMP receptor-like protein (Clp), is known to be a global transcriptional regulator for the expression of virulence factors in Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc). Sequence analysis showed that Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) contains a gene that is strongly homologous to the Xcc clp. In order to determine the role of the Clp homolog in Xoo, a marker exchange mutant of $clp_{xoo4158}$ was generated. Virulence and virulence factors, such as the production of cellulase, xylanase, and extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) and swarming motility were significantly decreased in the $clp_{xoo4158}$ mutant. Moreover, the mutation caused the strain to be more sensitive to hydrogen peroxide and to over-produce siderophores. Complementation of the mutant restored the mutation-related phenotypes. Expression of $clp_{xoo4158}$, assessed by reverse-transcription realtime PCR and clp promoter activity, was significantly reduced in the rpfB, rpfF, rpfC, and rpfG mutants. These results suggest that the clp homolog, $clp_{xoo4158}$, is involved in the control of virulence and resistance against oxidative stress, and that expression of the gene is controlled by RpfC and RpfG through a diffusible signal factor (DSF) signal in Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae KACC10859.
