  • Though stringent guidelines are in place to protect the harbor environment, pollution from ships, from the ports terminals. Discharge from the ballast tanks of ships, though illegal, does occur. Such vessels, arriving from distant ports of call, can introduce exotic species of plants and animals, causing disruption of the local food web. Discharges rich in nitrogen can generate the rapid growth of plankton, eventually leading to a condition known as red tide that is lethal to some coastal organisms. In addition to the harbor's negative effects on marine organisms, the diesel engines of the ships and the trucks that haul cargo to and from the ports release large volumes of diesel exhaust into the atmosphere. IMO(International Maritime Organization) is strongly proceeding with adoption of a new maritime environment convention and coming into effect for regulation enhancement about the pollutants which are happened in a ship recently. Study about the conventions that our country currently comes into effect, and there is during forwarding and correspondence must be performed effectively. In this paper, International convention on the control of harmful Anti-Fouling system on ship, Ballast water management, Prevention of air pollution from ships, treat a main pending problem in ocean related environmental regulation convention.

  • Nondestructive testing is one of the most commonly used quality inspection methods for evaluating ship structures. However, accurate evaluation is dif icult because various composite materials, such as reinforcements, resin, and fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), are used in hulls, and manufacturing quality differences are likely to exist owing to the fabrication environment and the skill level of workers. This possibility is especially true for FRP ships because they are significantly thicker than other structures, such as automobiles and aircraft, and are mainly manufactured using the hand lay-up method. Because the density of a material is a critical condition for ultrasonic inspection, in this study, a hull plate was selected from a vessel manufactured using e-glass fiber, which is widely used in the manufacture of FRP vessels with the weight fraction of the glass content generally considered. The most suitable ultrasonic testing conditions for the glass FRP hull plate were investigated using a pulse-echo ultrasonic gauge. A-scans were performed with three probes (1.00, 2.25, and 5.00 MHz), and the results were compared with those of the hull plate thickness measured using a Vernier caliper. It was found that when the probe frequency was higher, the eco-pulse velocity of the receiver had to be lowered to obtain accurate measurement results, whereas fewer errors occurred at a relatively low probe frequency.

  • A numerical analysis on the smoke behavior and evacuee safety has been performed with computational fluid dynamics. The purpose of this study is to build computational processes for an evacuation and prevention of a fire disaster of a 3 km-length tunnel in Korea. To save computational cost, 1.5 km of the tunnel that can include a few cross-passing tunnels is considered. We are going to assess the fire safety in a road tunnel according to the smoke level, which consists of the smoke density and the height from the floor. The smoke density is obtained in detail from three-dimensional unsteady CFD analysis. To obtain proper temperature distributions on the tunnel wall, one-dimensional conduction equation is considered instead of an adiabatic wall boundary or a constant heat flux. The tunnel considered in this study equips the cross passing tunnels for evacuees every 250 m. The distance is critical in both safety and economy. The more cross passing tunnels, the more safe but the more expensive. Three different jet fan operations can be considered in this study; under- and over-critical velocities for normal traffic condition and 0-velocoty operation for the traffic congestion. The SE (smoke environment) level maps show a smoke environment and an evacuating behavior every moment.

  • Damages of wooden cultural heritages caused by various bio-species have been a trend that is increasing on climate change. The decay and bio-damage caused by microbial organisms or insect species are also known to factors of the shape changes and structural problems of wooden cultural heritages. There are so many phenomenons of damage and weathering in wooden cultural heritage for many years and particularly termite can threaten seriously wooden cultural heritage. We investigated with respect to internal and external environment and termite inhabitation around the wooden cultural heritage in Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Jeju-do. As this investigation results, we confirmed that there were the difference in between resident and non-resident about temperature, humidity, moisture contents of wooden building. Resident building is high temperature but humidity and moisture contents is low and these factors are sources of inhabitation condition change about insects as termites. Now we suggest to carry out in parallel to the target wooden cultural heritage and the surrounding habitat for wooden cultural heritage termite damage investigation. Also with the chemical control methods, we must consider necessary to present eco-friendly control management such as construction of heating facilities, residential status, periodic management.

  • This study evaluated the effect of ultrasonic irradiation on improving the flux and cleaning efficiency in membrane process which is widely applied for the treatment of landfill leachate. The experiments on improvement of membrane flux according to the types of membranes(hallowfiber microfiltration, MF and tubular ultrafiltration, UF) were performed with changing frequency($40{\sim}120$ kHz), intensity ($200{\sim}500$ W) and irradiation time of ultrasound as well us operation pressure($0.1{\sim}2.3kg/cm^2$). Membrane was fouled for the first 50 min with primary treated leachate and then the change in flux according to ultrasonic irradiation period was observed for 70 min. Parameters influenced to the recovery ratio corresponding the net flux on pure water and to the enhancement ratio applied after ultrasonic irradiation on the flux were analyzed. In same condition, the flux was improved in proportion to ultrasonic intensity while the improvement of flux was inversely proportional to ultrasonic frequency. The cleaning effect of membrane was delayed and reduced when operation pressure of membrane was high. The recovery ratio and enhancement ratio for $0.1{\mu}m$ MF membrane were 10% and 500%, respectively while those were maximized at $75{\sim}98%\;and\;40{\sim}50%$ for UF membrane for 10,000 and 100,000 MWCO, respectively. In conclusion, it was confirmed that ultrasonic cleaning using mechanical vibration is alternative to water or chemical cleaning for improving membrane flux.

  • Many objects existing on wide area environments have the replication characteristics according to how to categorize using their own names or properties. From the clients' requests, the existing naming and trading services have not supported with the binding service for replicated solver object with the same service type. For this reason, we present an integrated model that can support the selection of replicated object and dynamic binding services on wide-area computing environments. This model suggests provides not only location management of replicated objects but also active binding service which enables to select a least-loaded object on the system to keep the balance of load between systems. In this purpose, constructing both the service plan and model for support solver object's binding with replication property on wide area computing environments has been researched. In this paper, we showed the test environment and analyzed the performance evaluation of client/server binding procedures via integrated binding service in federation model and verified our model under the condition to see whether load balance can be applied to our model. For the performance evaluation of suggested wide area integrated binding service federation model, evaluated the integrated binding service of each domain and analyzed the performance evaluation of process for non-replication object's under federation model environment. Also, we analyzed the performance evaluation of the federation model between domains for wide area environment. From the execution results, we showed the federation model provides lowers search-cost on the physical tree structure of network.

  • Line density index(LDI) was developed to quantify a densely isothermal line rate as standard index in the ocean environment. Theoretical background on the LDI development process restricting index range 0 to 100 was described. And validation test was done for the LDI application condition that total line length is not greater than 1/10 of unit area. NOAA SST(Sea Surface Temperature) data were used for the experimental application of LDI in the South Sea of Korea. Using GIS, $0.1^{\circ}C$ isothermal lines were linearized as vector data form SST raster data, and unit area were built as polygon data. For the LDI calculation, spatial overlapping(line in polygon) was implemented. To analyze the effect of unit area size for the LDI distribution, two cases of unit area size were designed and descriptive statistics was calculated including performing normality test. The results showed no change of LDI's essential characteristics such as mean and normality except for the range of value, variance and standard deviation. Accordingly, it was found that complex structure of thermal front and even smaller scale of front width than unit area size could influence on the LDI distribution. Also, correlation analysis performed between LDI and difference of temperature(${\Delta}T^{\circ}C$), and horizontal thermal gradient(${\Delta}T^{\circ}C/km$) on the front was obtained from linear regression model. This obtained value was compared with the results from previous researches. Newly developed LDI can be used to compare the thermal front regions changing spatio-temporally in the ocean environment using absolute index value. It is considered to be significant to analyze the relationship between thermal front and marine environment or front and marine organisms in a quantitative approach described in this study.

  • This study investigated a long-term variation trend of water quality, fish compositions, and ecological health conditions in the Gwanpyeong stream located in the nearby Daejeon metropolitan city to understand the impact of urban development projects on the aquatic ecosystem. The sampling was made in four surveys (2009, 2010, 2016, 2019) before and after urbanization. The urban development was conducted in 2008, resulting in the stream's ecological disturbance, and the stream restoration was conducted in 2012. Thus, stream monitoring was conducted to analyze the ecological trends before and after the restoration. The multi-metric models for Fish Assessment Index(FAI) and necropsy-based Health Assessment Index(HAI) were applied in the fish community and organ-level, respectively, to assess the ecological health of the stream. Minimum turbidity and chlorophyll-a(Chl-a) occurred in the mid-stream(St. 2), and this was probably due to rapid current velocity in the riffle zone. We collected 18 fish species, and the dominant species was Zacco platypus (40.6%). In 2016 immediately after the stream restoration, the relative proportions of sensitive species and insectivore species were the highest along with highest values in the species diversity and species richness index, resulting in the best condition in the ecological health, based on FAI model values. However, the ecological health, based on the FAI, became worse in the latest survey conducted in 2019. The analysis of the HAI model based on the organ-level approach showed skin erosion in the fish of upper stream, kidney defects in downstream, and the liver and gill defects observed in all sites, indicating that the anatomical health was also affected.

  • Research results for the pressure drop variance depending on operation conditions such as change of inlet concentration, pulse interval, and face velocity, etc., in a pulse air jet-type bag filter show that while at $3kg/cm^2$ whose pulse pressure is low, it is good to make an pulse interval longer in order to form the first layer, it may not be applicable to industry because of a rapid increase in pressure. In addition, the change of inlet concentration contributes more to the increase of pressure drop than the pulse interval does. In order to reduce operation costs by minimizing filter drag of a filter bag at pulse pressure $5kg/cm^2$, the dust concentration should be minimized, and when the inlet dust loading is a lower concentration, the pulse interval in the operation should be less than 70 sec, but when inlet dust loading is a higher concentration, the pulse interval should be below 30 sec. In particular, in the case that inlet dust loading is a higher concentration, a high-pressure distribution is observed regardless of pulse pressure. This is because dust is accumulated continuously in the filter bag and makes it thicker as filtration time increases, and thus the pulse interval should be set to below 30 sec. If the equipment is operated at 1m/min of face velocity, while pressure drop is low, the bag filter becomes larger and thus, its economics are very low due to a large initial investment. Therefore, a face velocity of around 1.5 m/min is considered to be the optimal operation condition. At 1.5 m/min considered to be the most economical face velocity, if the pulse interval increases, since the amount of variation in filter drag is large, depending on the amount of inlet dust loading, the operation may be possible at a lower concentration when the pulse interval is 70 sec. However, for a higher concentration, either face velocity or pulse interval should be reduced.
