  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the indirect effects of forest using the forest healing factors such as landscape and hearing factors on mood improvement. The experiment was conducted for about 2 months from October 5, 2016 to November 30, 2016 targeting 30 healthy college students ($23.6{\pm}1.7$ years old). After making 3 factors(image factor, sound factor and image+sound factor) using scenery and sound of both forest and urban space, participants undergone the test in a room. And the effects of these 3 factors on the mood improvement were compared and analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. Profile of Mood State test (POMS) and Semantic Differential method (SD) were used to measure mood improvement as a psychological test. As a result, indirect forest stimulation showed effects of suppressing tension, fatigue, anger, confusion, depression, and enhancement of vitality. No significant difference was observed in the comparison between forest stimuli. However, Compared with the urban stimuli, the stimulation of the forests has the effect of enhancing pleasant, natural feeling and calmness.

  • Neuroinflammation is an important process underlying a wide variety of neurodegenerative diseases. Carvacrol (CAR) is a phenolic monoterpene commonly used as a food additive due to its antibacterial properties, but it has also been shown to exhibit strong antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. Here, we sought to investigate the effects of CAR on inflammation in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects. In our study, lipopolysaccharide was injected into the lateral ventricle of rats to induce memory impairment and neuroinflammation. Daily administration of CAR (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) for 21 days improved recognition, discrimination, and memory impairments relative to untreated controls. CAR administration significantly attenuated expression of several inflammatory factors in the brain, including interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and cyclooxygenase-2. In addition, CAR significantly increased expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA, and decreased expression of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mRNA. Taken together, these results show that CAR can improve memory impairment caused by neuroinflammation. This cognitive enhancement is due to the anti-inflammatory effects of CAR medicated by its regulation of BDNF and TLR4. Thus, CAR has significant potential as an inhibitor of memory degeneration in neurodegenerative diseases.

  • The CHH/MIH/GIH peptide family of black tiger prawn (Paneaus monodon) is important in shrimp reproduction and growth enhancement. In this study, the cDNA that encodes the complete peptide that is related to the CHH/MIH/GIH family (so-called, Pem-CMG) in the eyestalk of P. monodon was successfully expressed in a methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris under the control of an alcohol oxidase promoter. In order to obtain the secreted Pem-CMG, a secretion signal of either the Saccharomyces cerevisiae $\alpha$-factor or Pem-CMG was employed. The results demonstrated that ${\alpha}Pem$-CMG, either with (${\alpha}2EACMG$) or without (${\alpha}CMG$) the Glu-Ala repeats, was secreted into the medium, while Pem-CMG with its own secretion signal failed to be secreted. The total protein amount that was secreted from the transformant that contained either ${\alpha}2EACMG$ or ${\alpha}CMG$ was approximately 60 mg/l and 150 mg/l, respectively. The N-terminus of the Pem-CMG peptide of both ${\alpha}2EACMG$ and ${\alpha}CMG$ was correctly processed. This produced the mature Pem-CMG peptide.

  • In this study an adaptive algorithm with optimum convergence factor for steepest descent method is proposed, which controls automatically the filter order to take the appropriate level. So far, fixed order filters have been used when adaptive filter is employed according to the priori knowledge or experience in various adaptive signal processing applications. But, it is so difficult to know the filter order needed in real implementations that high order filters have to be performed. As a result, redundant calculations are increased in the case of high order filters. The proposed variable length optimum convergence factor (VLOCF) algorithm takes the appropriated filter order within the given one so that the redundant calculation is decreased to get the enhancement of convergence speed and smaller convergence error during the steady state. The proposed algorithm is evaluated to prove the validity by computer simulation for system Identification.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to find correlation between the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and MR findings in the brain glioma. Materials and Methods: MR features including edema, margin, necrosis, heterogeneity, hemorrhage and contrast enhancement were retrospectively analyzed with preoperative MR images in 41 patients with proven brain gliomas (8 low grade astrocytomas, 12 anaplastic astrocytomas, 21 glioblastoma multiformes). Immunohistochemical study of EGFR was done and their expressions were graded by both stained distribution and intensity. Correlation analysis between the MR features and EGFR expressions was done. Results: Peritumoral edema was correlated with both distribution (r=0.71, p=0.00) and stain intensity (r=0.69, p=0.00) of EGFR expression. Other MR features showed no statistical correlation with EGFR expression. Conclusion: MRI is useful in evaluation of brain glioma, and peritumoral edema is useful finding that suggests EGFR expression as well as malignant histopathologic grade of the tumor.

  • Adaptive Bit Loading (ABL) in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) is often used to achieve the desired Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in wireless systems. In this paper, we discuss some of the bit loading algorithms, compare them in terms of the BER performance, and present an effective and concise Adaptive Grouped Loading (AGL) algorithm. Furthermore, we propose a "weight factor" for loading algorithm to converge rapidly to the final solution for various data rate with variable Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) gaps. In particular, we consider the bit loading in near optimal Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) based MIMO-OFDM system. While using SVD based system, the system requires perfect Channel State Information (CSI) of channel transfer function at the transmitter. This scenario of SVD based system is taken as an ideal case for the comparison of loading algorithms and to show the actual enhancement achievable by our AGL algorithm. Irrespective of the CSI requirement imposed by the mode of the system itself, ABL demands high level of feedback. Grouped Loading (GL) would reduce the feedback requirement depending upon the group size. However, this also leads to considerable degradation in BER performance. In our AGL algorithm, groups are formed with a number of consecutive sub-channels belonging to the same transmit antenna, with individual gains satisfying predefined criteria. Simulation results show that the proposed "weight factor" leads a loading algorithm to rapid convergence for various data rates with variable SNR gap values and AGL requires much lesser CSI compared to GL for the same BER performance.

  • This paper newly proposes a methodology towards computing antenna element weights which are satisfying asymmetric sidelobe levels(SLLs) specified arbitrarily on both sides of the main beam pattern, in the linear phased array antenna pattern synthesis problem. Opposite to the conventional methods in which the element weights are directly optimized from the array factor, this method is based on the optimum perturbations of complex roots inherent to the Schelkunoff's polynomial form which is described for the array factor. From the proposed methodology, the capability of nulling the directions of multiple jammers is also possible by independently perturbing only the complex roots corresponding to each jamming direction, hence allowing an enhancement of the simplicity of the numerical procedure by means of a proper reduction of the dimension of the solution space. The complex weights over the array are then easily computed by substituting the optimally perturbed complex roots to the Schelkunoff's polynomial. Some examples are examined and numerically verified by substituting the extracted weights into the array factor equation.
