Numerical approaches for vibration response of annular and circular composite plates

  • In the present investigation, by using the two numerical methods, free vibration analysis of laminated annular and annular sector plates have been studied. In order to obtain the main equations two different shell theories such as Love's shell theory and first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) have been used for modeling. After obtaining the fundamental equations in briefly, the methods of harmonic differential quadrature (HDQ) and discrete singular convolution (DSC) are used to solve the equation of motion. Accuracy, convergence and reliability of the present HDQ and DSC methods were tested by comparing the existing results obtained by different methods in the literature. The effects of some geometric and material properties of the plates are investigated via these two methods. The advantages and accuracy of the HDQ and DSC methods have also been examined with different grid numbers and shell theory. Some results for laminated annular plates and laminated circular plates were also been supplied.

  • The Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller is the most popular industrial controller and more than 90% process industries use this controller. During the past 50 years, numerous good tuning methods have been proposed for Single Input Single Output Systems. However, design of PI/PID controllers for multivariable processes is a challenge for the researchers. A comparative study of three PID controllers design methods has been carried-out. These methods include the DS (Direct Synthesis) method, IMC (Internal model Control) method and ETF (Effective Transfer Function) method. MIMO PID controllers are designed for a number of 2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 process models with multiple delays. The performance of the three methods has been evaluated through simulation studies in Matlab/Simulink environment. After extensive simulation studies, it is found that the Effective Transfer Function (ETF) Method produces better output responses among two methods. In this work, only decentralized methods of PID controllers have been studied and investigated.

  • The problem of the structural identification becomes important, particularly with relation to the rapid increase of the number of the damaged or deteriorated structures, such as highway bridges, buildings, and industrial facilities. This paper summarizes the recent studies related to those problems by the present authors. The system identfication methods are generally classified as the time domain and the frequency domain methods. As time doamin methods, the sequential algorithms such as the extended Kalman filter and the sequential prediction error method are studied. Several techniques for improving the convergences are incorporated. As frequency domain methods, a new frequency response function estimator is introduced. For damage estimation of existing structures, the modal perturbation and the sensitivity matrix methods are studied. From the example analysis, it has been found that the combined utilization of the measurement data for the static response and the dynamic (modal) properties are very effictive for the damage estimation.

  • This paper evaluates the effectiveness of three nonlinear static methods for the prediction of the dynamic response of in-plan irregular buildings. The methods considered are the method suggested in Eurocode 8, a method previously proposed by some of the authors and based on corrective eccentricities and a new method in which two pushover analyses are considered, one with lateral forces applied to the centres of mass of the floors and the other with only translational response. The numerical analyses are carried out on a set of refined models of reinforced concrete framed buildings. The response predicted by the nonlinear static analyses is compared to that provided by nonlinear dynamic analyses. The effectiveness of the nonlinear static methods is evaluated in terms of absolute and interstorey displacements.

Effect of Mixing Methods on the Biodegradation of Sorbed Naphthalene and Phenanthrene in Soils

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mixing methods on the biodegradation of sorbed naphthalene and phenanthrene in soils. Biodegradation was initiated by inoculating Pseudomonas sp. KM1 into equilibrated soil slurry vials. Four different mixing methods, including no mixing, orbital shaking, rolling and rotating were utilized to enhance the biodegradation of both naphthalene and phenanthrene. The experimental results showed that the sorbed compounds were more effectively biodegraded with rolling and rotating mixing methods. The sorbed naphthalene concentrations were reduced to 0 mg/kg via the rolling and rotating methods. However, with no mixing and the orbital shaking methods, the sorbed naphthalene concentrations were comparatively high, ranging from 2.59 to 20.45 mg/kg. Similar trends were observed for the biodegradation of phenanthrene, but the concentrations remaining were higher than those of naphthalene, due to the limited bioavailability of the sorbed phenanthrene. The rolling and rotating mixing methods are suggested can distribute bacteria uniformly in the slurry system; improve the mass transfer rate and the probability of physical contact between bacteria and the sorbed contaminants, resulting in higher bioavailability of the contaminants.

  • In this study, we intended to compare and examine several settlement management methods by analyzing measurement results of a site of the industrial complex at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ province. We predicted and analyzed the amount of final settlement by using generally used final settlement methods as like Hyperbola method, Hoshino methods and Asaoka method. And then, We compared the predicted results with that of measurement. On the basis of comparison of the three methods, Hyperbola method was the most convenient and accurate method of the three methods and if a sufficient time was given enough after embankment construction, the use of Hoshino method was possible. In the case of the Asaoka methods, it was possible to know that it had an approaching tendency to the measured one with increasing time interval spent on analysis. Therefore, in order to predict settlement behavior more accurately it is needed to understand their advantages and shortcomings sufficiently and pay attention to application to the real site.

Aerodynamic Investigation for Prospective Aerospace Vehicle in the Transitional Regime

  • The basic quantitative tool for the study of hypersonic rarefied flows is the direct simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC). The DSMC method requires a large amount of computer memory and performance and is unreasonably expensive at the first stage of spacecraft design and trajectory analysis. A possible solution to this problem is approximate engineering methods. However, the Monte Carlo method remains the most reliable approach to compare to the engineering methods that provide good results for the global aerodynamic coefficients of various geometry designs. This paper presents the calculation results of aerodynamic characteristics for spacecraft vehicles in the free molecular, the transitional and the continuum regimes using the local engineering method. Results and methods would be useful to calculate aerodynamics for new-generation hypersonic vehicle designs.

  • Two computational methods for determining equilibrium states for the Mark-IV electrorefiner (ER) have been assessed to improve the current computational electrorefiner model developed at University of Idaho. Both methods were validated against measured data to better understand their effects on the calculation of the equilibrium compositions in the ER. In addition, a sensitivity study was performed on the effect of specific unknown activity coefficients-including sodium in molten cadmium, zirconium in molten cadmium, and sodium chloride in molten LiCl-KCl. Both computational methods produced identical results, which stayed within the 95% confidence interval of the experimental data. Furthermore, sensitivity to unavailable activity coefficients was found to be low (a change in concentration of less than 3 ppm).

  • The core issue of ethical problem solving in engineering is to understand what exactly happened and to define its nature. Problems often arise mostly in morally complex situations. Traditional philosophical theories usually focus on extreme conflicts of interest and suggest moral theory-centered problem solving methods. However, these methods are not only difficult to specifically apply to real situations, but also are likely to fail to deal with actual moral issues in engineering fields. This study aims to develop more desirable ethical problem solving methods, based on STS (Science and Technology Studies) and engineering ethics combined. First, we have examined the engineering ethics with implications of an STS perspective, then have analyzed traditional ethical problem solving methods in a critical point of view. This study will suggest a new ethical problem solving method named Matrix Guide, based upon those analyses. Specifically, this study classifies four stages of problem definition, analysis, solving, and feedback. Here, we focus on how to combine technological and non-technological factors in each stage, when we are facing morally complex situations in engineering sectors.

Multiplexing methods of volume holograms using fiber speckle patterns

  • The method of using fiber speckle patterns can be applied to the multiplexing of volume holograms. Fiber speckle patterns enable various multiplexing techniques such as shift, angular, and mode-scrambling methods Hybrid methods involving more than one multiplexing technique are also possible. Some images are stored and retrieved with one or two of multiplexing methods, and the experimental results are discussed.
