Biofilms significantly affect the performance of wastewater treatment processes in which biodegradability of numerous microorganisms are actively involved, and various technologies have been applied to secure microbial biofilms. Understanding changes in biofilm characteristics by regulating expression of signaling molecules is important to control and regulate biofilms in membrane bioreactor, i.e., biofouling. This study investigated effects of addition of acyl-homoserine lactones (AHL) as a controllable factor for the microbial signaling system on biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and multiple strains in membrane bioreactor. The addition of three AHL, i.e., C4-, C6-, and C8-HSL, at a concentration of 200 ㎍/L, enhanced the formation of the PAO1 biofilm and the degree of increases in the biofilm formation of PAO1 were 70.2%, 76.6%, and 72.9%, respectively. The improvement of biofilm formation of individual strains by C4-HSL was an average of 68%, and the microbial consortia increased by approximately 52.1% in the presence of 200 ㎍/L C4-HSL. CLSM images showed that more bacterial cells were present on the membrane surface after the AHL application. In the COMSTAT results, biomass and thickness were increased up to 2.2 times (PAO1) and 1.6 times (multi-strains) by C4-HSL. This study clearly showed that biofilm formation was increased by the application of AHL to individual strain groups, including PAO1 and microbial consortia, and significant increases were observed when 50 or 100 ㎍/L AHL was administered. This suggests that AHL application can improve the biofilm formation of microorganisms, which could yield an enhancement in efficiency of biofilm control, such as in various biofilm reactors including membrane bioreactor and bioflocculent systems in water/wastewater treatment processes.
The objective of this study was to evaluate Environmental microbiology (EM) as a basic course for the environmental engineering program of Korea Maritime University which has been accredited by Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK). Evaluation result of the lecture objectives was more than the average (3.5/5.0). The overall score for learning achievement assessment was more than average level of learning achievement (3.4/5.0). Interestingly, engineering design implementation regarding a specific topic as an extensive learning process has proven to be more effective (3.5/5.0). Some of effective class improvement strategies suggested were to encourage students to participate in the class with self-motivation and accountability: preview and review of the lecture, team presentation in English-speaking settings, and submitting project report written in English. In the future class of EM, test and evaluation of application capability of EM and environmental biotechnology (EB) theories to engineering problem solving should be emphasized.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) researchers have identified Augmented Reality (AR) as a new technology that can assist inspections. Post-seismic structural inspections are conducted to evaluate the safety level of the damaged structures. Quantification of nearby structural changes over short-term and long-term periods can provide building inspectors with information to improve their safety. This paper proposes a Time Machine Measure (TMM) application based on an Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Mounted-Device (HMD) platform. The primary function of TMM is to restore the saved meshes of a past environment and overlay them onto the real environment so that inspectors can intuitively measure dynamic structural deformation and other environmental movements. The proposed TMM application was verified by demo experiments simulating a real inspection environment.

The Bayesian approach can be used to estimate hydrologic model parameters from the prior expert knowledge about the parameter values and the observed data. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of the two Bayesian methods, the Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm and the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method. These two methods were applied to the TANK model, a hydrological model comprising 13 parameters, to examine the uncertainty of the parameters of the model. The TANK model comprises a combination of multiple reservoir-type virtual vessels with orifice-type outlets and implements a common major hydrological process using the runoff calculations that convert the rainfall to the flow. As a result of the application to the Nam River A watershed, the two Bayesian methods yielded similar flow simulation results even though the parameter estimates obtained by the two methods were of somewhat different values. Both methods ensure the model's prediction accuracy even when the observed flow data available for parameter estimation is limited. However, the prediction accuracy of the model using the MH algorithm yielded slightly better results than that of the GLUE method. The flow duration curve calculated using the limited observed flow data showed that the marginal reliability is secured from the perspective of practical application.

The purpose of this study is to improve the environmental applicability of nonwovens by using special composition. Polypropylene spunbonded and needle punched nonwovens which have the lower cost than polyester nonwovens were used as the raw materials to manufacture the natural fiber used nonwoven geotextiles. These geotextiles were made by use of the thermal bonding methods and composed of jute(or flax)/polypropylene staple fiber blends were obtained in consideration of environmental application. Finally, the engineering properties of natural fiber used nonwoven geotextiles were investigated as eco-friendly materials.
In recent years, carbon-based catalysts have become a research hotspot in environmental governance applications. Carbon-based catalysts have large surface areas, porous structures, multi-surface functional groups and excellent electron transfer capabilities, and can synergistically exhibit adsorption and catalytic performance. This article reviews the research progress of carbon-based catalysts in environmental governance, mainly including its application in wastewater treatment, exhaust gas purification and soil remediation. In view of the current difficulties in the research of carbon-based catalysts, the development prospects are proposed. We hope that this review will provide convenience for new entrants and researchers intending to employ carbon-based catalysts for the remediation of contaminated environment.

This study set the hypothesis to develop the method that was analysis and application of a reliability evaluation method of environmental material for the Computer, Color TV, Monitor, Microwave oven, Electric Refrigerator, Automobile parts, other goods. RoHS management and product reliability ensure method for the conservation of environment. Especially, this study emphasis on regulate export of the EU and North America that it's a environmental material problem. Therefore, this study emphasis on the application of a reliability ensure method of environmental material and the use of other parameter by environmental reliability test data. The result of this study is as follows. 1) There is relationship between regulate material and technical protecting system. 2) Characteristics of hazard material is operating a healthcare damage factor as well as regulate environmental factors.

The degrees of freedom (DOFs) of high-rise structures increase rapidly due to the need for refined analysis, which poses a challenge toward a computationally efficient method for numerical analysis of high-rise structures using the finite element method (FEM). This paper presented an efficient iterative method, an algebraic multigrid (AMG) with a Jacobi overrelaxation smoother preconditioned conjugate gradient method (AMG-CG) used for solving large-scale structural system equations running on heterogeneous platforms with parallel accelerator graphics processing units (GPUs) enabled. Furthermore, an AMG-CG FEM application framework was established for the numerical analysis of high-rise structures. In the proposed method, the coarsening method, the optimal relaxation coefficient of the JOR smoother, the smoothing times, and the solution method for the coarsest grid of an AMG preconditioner were investigated via several numerical benchmarks of high-rise structures. The accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed FEM application framework were compared using the mature software Abaqus, and there were speedups of up to 18.4x when using an NVIDIA K40C GPU hosted in a workstation. The results demonstrated that the proposed method could improve the computational efficiency of solving structural system equations, and the AMG-CG FEM application framework was inherently suitable for numerical analysis of high-rise structures.
