Elliptical and anaphoric utterances occur frequently during spoken dialogue. Because discourse analysis rests on the basic premise that linguistic items cannot be understood without reference to the context, ellipsis and anaphora resolution plays an important role in discourse analysis. In this paper, we present a spoken dialogue system improving the robustness at dialogue level based on discourse analysis, such as anaphora and ellipsis resolution. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated in the TV domain.

대용(anaphora)과 생략(.ellipsis)지을 포함한 지시 해결(reference resolution)은 자연어 처리에 있어서 꼭 해결하고 넘어가야 할 문제이며 지시어가 가리키는 피지시어를 올바르게 찾아내는가의 여부가 자연어처리 시스템의 성패를 가름하는 중요한 요소가 된다해도 과언이 아니다. 본 논문에서는 한국어 대용과 생략을 해결하기 위한 기제로서 센터링 이론이 적합한가를 검토하고 나아가 언어에 따라서 다르게 제안된 Cf 목록의 순서를 한국어의 언어특성에 맞게 결정하는 기법을 제안한다. 센터링 이론에서 각 개별언어 간의 차이가 가장 두드러지게 나타나는 부분은 Cf 목록을 구성하는 요소들의 순서이다. 여기에서는 한국어와 언어적인 특성이 유사한 일본어를 대상으로 제안된 순서를 한국어에도 그대로 적용될 수 있는지 검토하고 문제점을 지적함과 동시에 개선 방안을 아울러 살펴보고자 한다.

This paper proposes that the argument structures be stated in a way that uses probabilities derived from a corpus to replace a Boolean-value system of subcategorization. To do this, we make a cognitive model from a situation to an utterance to explain the phenomena of arguments'ellipsis, though the traditional term ellipsis is not suitable under our new concepts. We claim that the binary distinction is neither rational nor suitable for a real syntactic analysis. To solve this problem, we propose two new concepts argumentness and probabilistic Case structures by adapting the prototype theory. We believe that these concepts are effective in the syntactic analysis of NLP.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a theory for the interpretation of VP-ellipsis. Although there have been various proposals such as Sag(1976), Williams(1977), Darlymple et al.(1991), there remain many problems, especially with respect to the interpretation of pronouns. Assuming that a coordinate sentence forms a kind of discourse, we propose a theory which consists of two subparts, i. e. a revised HPSG for the syntactic treatment and a so-called 'default-inheritance' mechanism for the interpretation of elliptical parts. By means of this theory, we can explain various elliptical constructions of Fiengo and May(1994), in which pronouns are interpreted ambiguously within the elliptical conjuncts of coordinate sentences according to the related syntactic and the discourse structures.

On the Inherent (non-) Negativity of Negative Sensitive Items. This paper explores the idea that Korean Negative Sensitive Items, which are better viewed as Negative Concord Items (NCIs) (Kim 2001, 2006, Watanabe 2004), should not be construed as inherently negative in spite of the fact that NCIs are able to appear as an elided form without the presence of a negative licenser. Among several diagnostics, which are designed to draw syntactic and semantic distinctions between traditional Negative Polarity Items (NPIs) and NCIs employed in previous studies, the ability of an NCI to appear as a fragment answer raises the question of whether the negativity of NCIs is inherent or not. Contrary to Kim (2001, 2006) and Watanabe (2004), who are in favor of the inherent negativity of NCIs, I claim that non-negative Korean NCIs still need contentful negation to be licensed, and therefore their ability to appear as a fragment answer should be considered as a matter of ellipsis, in support of Giannakidou (2000, 2006). The main argument will be strengthened by the fact that Korean NCIs do not express negative meaning themselves, and that double negation readings are not allowed no matter how many NCIs occur simultaneously.

Curved beams are one of the most important basic structural units as well as the beams, columns and plates. This paper is intended to describe the idiosyncratic aspects of the 'let alone' construction in English, clarifying the productivity property of this construction and to show that this construction displays the properties of prepositional phrase that denote the meaning of 'the comparison of degree', against the claim that this construction should be regarded as a coordinating conjunction. In the process of doing that, this paper classifies this 'let alone' construction into two types of construction, by investigating the external and internal syntactic distributions of 'let alone' constructions as well as the relationship between 'let alone' phrases and the main clause.
