  • This study examines trends by school level, region, subject, and type centered on elementary schools when private education is perceived as a social problem due to the overheating of private education and its over-dependence. This study aims to provide a direction to ease the school mathematics education and meet the expectations of school mathematics education. As a result of this study, in mathematics subjects, the graph of private education expenses for mathematics subjects was not affected by the period and showed a somewhat consistent linear trend. In other words, we found that the private education cost of the mathematics subject was solid compared to other factors, and was not significantly affected by external variables, and was consistent. It is meaningful to examine the trends of private education costs in mathematics subjects with a comparison between the past and present and to grasp what factors and how they have changed and developed.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore how pre-service elementary school teachers participate in a course specifically designed to help them learn how to analyze instruction in terms of the levels of cognitive demand of mathematical tasks. This paper describes what prospective teachers learned while reading the cases of "implementing standards-based mathematics instruction", analyzing all tasks of one unit in one elementary mathematics textbook, observing master teachers' mathematics instruction as well as their colleagues during the practicum period, and developing their own cases on the basis of the design and implementation of instruction focused on mathematical tasks. This paper includes various reflections of the prospective teachers.

  • A well-designed mathematics lesson is the foundation for effective mathematics instruction. Given this significance, this paper focused on analyzing what would be important elements for in-service teachers in planning an elementary mathematics lesson. For this purpose, a total of 27 in-service teachers were asked to write down whatever they would consider important in designing a mathematics lesson. A mathematics lesson plan prepared by a pre-service teacher was provided for the in-service teachers. They were then asked to analyze the strengths of the lesson plan and to provide detailed feedback on how to improve it. The results of this study showed that the in-service teachers tended to analyze the given mathematics lesson plan in terms of what they considered important regarding lesson design. Such elements were specified when the in-service teachers described the strengths and feedback for improvement of the lesson plan. In particular, the aspects of instructional strategies and materials were explained in detail. Based on these results, this paper is expected to provoke discussions on lesson design of in-service teachers and subsequent research.

  • This literature review focuses on the history of research on elementary students' mathematics anxiety. The results of analysis shows the characteristics, measurement tools, causes and the treatments of mathematics anxiety. The purpose of this study is to provide analytical views of elementary students' mathematics anxiety to teachers, researchers and policymakers. I categorize the results of analysis according to the key words of literatures: (1) the relationship between mathematics anxiety and students' behavior (2) measurements of mathematics anxiety (3) the causes of mathematics anxiety and (4) the treatment of mathematics anxiety.

  • This study is designed for helping elementary school teachers have an insight into making or choosing questions of descriptive assessment in mathematics. For this, it is analyzed 30 descriptive mathematical questions produced by Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education in 2011 and 2012 and 3rd to 6th grade students' papers marked by their teachers in charge from 2 elementary schools located in Gyeonggi Province. The main focus of analysis is the errors of students' answers and teachers' marking not from their own mistakes but from the defects of questions themselves. As a result of analysis, 7 cases of problematic situations are induced and they are reorganized into 3 categories as follow: i) case of not performing unique purpose of descriptive assessment, ii) case of inducing the problem of fairness of grading, iii) case of leading students erroneous direction.

  • The basic direction of mathematical education for a 21st century is focused on helping student to understand mathematics and develop their problem solving abilities, mathematical dispositions and mathematical thinking. Elementary mathematics teachers should help students make sense of mathematics, confident of their ability, and make learning environment comfortable for students to participate in. The best way is to provide chances to play a game for students, considering educational value of game and new directions for mathematical education. Therefore I would like to develop an mathematical game to conform mathematical ideas, and apply it, as well as strengthen students' mathematical disposition such as confidence, flexibility, interest and curiosity to improve quality of mathematical education. If students are helped to be interested in mathematics through mathematical games, they regard mathematics as interesting and challengeable subject to let themselves think many ways.

  • The purpose of this research is to study and learn more features how this type of distribution for communication in $6^{th}$ grade first semester elementary science and mathematics according to communicative expression by 2009 revised curriculum. For this study, based on an analysis standard presented in previous research on the types of communication. The results of this research are as follows. First, because the mathematics presents the number of ways to communicate twice more than science, mathematics go through with much more problems to solve than science. Second, in mathematics, spoken method and written method have similar proportion, less in physical activity method. Third, Science showed balanced proportion among four areas; earth, life, energy, and material. On the other hand, mathematics only showed small numbers in the area of geometry but similar numbers in number and operations, regularity, measurement. Fourth, there is no common feature or relevance about communicative approach for convergence thinking in 2009 revised curriculum, it seems that it doesn't consider it as a revised.

  • Under the consideration of Chinese math education tradition and new educational orientation, we compared and analyzed Korea and China's lower-grade elementary school textbooks. The result was that Chinese textbook puts much emphases on practice, skill and repetition, presents condensed contents, provides various learning contents simultaneously, rich humorous expressions, and a lot of implicit representations. From these results, we presented some implications for our mathematics education, future textbook writing, and the follow-up studies.

  • This research aims to compare and identify the prospective elementary teachers' perspectives on mathematics class. In this aim, we analyzed the comments on the mathematics class by the prospective elementary teachers (senior students and junior students) who are differ in the time of study in the University of Education. As the results of this research, the senior students commented the mathematics class by applying the theories in mathematics education, but the junior students did not. Furthermore, the senior students had the more rigid perspectives on mathematics class and commented in more depth on mathematics class in comparison with the junior students. While, the senior students showed a weak point that they overextended and over-applied the some mathematics education theories in the comments on mathematics class.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary school teachers'concern and implementation of differentiated instruction of mathematics. To achieve the purpose, this study applied measurements of CBAM, including Stages of Concern Questionnaire and Innovation Configurations Checklist, to 133 elementary school teachers. The results indicated that most teachers were in awareness stage, which meant they had little concern on differentiated mathematics instruction. As well as, analysis on innovation configurations revealed that b and c variation, each referred to fidelity to and deviance from national curriculum standard relatively, were dominant in their instruction. Based on the results, the study suggested implications on future policies and teacher training for differentiated mathematics instruction.
