  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the pattern and characteristics of elementary school teaching and learning processes in science based classes. The study participants' class was recorded in video and instructional conversation transcription. The pattern of the observed class was analyzed using the classification frame suggested by Mogan &Saxton(2006). In result, the questioning for elicit information was most frequent and questioning for shape understanding and the questioning for press for reflection in its priority. In result, the presence of elicited questioning for the attainment of knowledge and understanding is more prominent in science-based classrooms. It was revealed that the participating teachers used the questioning sentence pattern more frequently and the self-sustained inquiry that accelerates creative thinking of the student was lacking. It was discovered that teaching elicited questioning, which accelerates creative thinking, as well as fact confirmation pattern is a necessary element of training for teachers.

  • This study aimed to understand students' learning in elementary science classes in terms of participatory perspective. Participatory perspective is based on the participationist views on learning. Based on the participatory perspective, this study used two concepts of participationism: 'the changes of learning on commognition' of Sfard (2007) and 'the identity' of Wenger (1998/2007). Based on these concepts, four episodes of an elementary science class were analyzed. The results showed that students carried out their learning from objective-level learning to meta-level learning. And students defined who they are by identifying and negotiating scientific meaning during the learning. These results showed students become members of science community through their participations in science class.

  • Objectives: Students in elementary schools usually wash their hands in a washstand. However, little attention is paid to the washstand itself. Today, the importance of personal sanitation and hygiene is greatly emphasized. Therefore students' parents and the public are growing increasingly interested in accessibility to washstands by elementary school students in their schools. Methods: With respect to this study, a survey of students and teachers inelementary schools was performed on the installation of washstands in order to determine the proper number of washstands per school. Results: The results show that 1.1 boys (per class) need a washstand, while 1.8 girls (per class) do so in order to maintain a 50% level of crowdedness. By of the regression equation, to maintain 50% congestion (50% of all students feel congestion) there should be 18.5 boys, and the 15.76 girls per washstand. Table 3 is based on the above results, the number of students per washstand (x) and congestion (y), separated by gender according to the results of regression analysis, the correlation of male models in the linear regression analysis and correlation of girls in the regression equation can be obtained. The linear regression fit of less than 0.7 determines that the coefficients of determination are 0.5399 and 0.4195, respectively. Significance was much smaller. Also, according to the simulation using the diffusion model, with 29 students per class more than one washstand should be provided in a school. Girls (per class) need 0.7 more washstands than boys (per class). Conclusions: More washstand facilities for girls than boys are needed. If the target is based on school class size two washstands should be installed. Finally, guidelines and/or standards in the Schools Health Act of Korea forin elementary school washstands is considerably needed.

  • This study aimed to identify elementary school teachers' perceptions of various aspects of physical environments of a classroom. For the purpose, a survey questionnaire was administered to 982 classroom teachers(female 82.2%) working at 67 elementary schools(Seoul 55%) located in Seoul and Busan. According to the analyses of the survey data, 50.8% of the respondent teachers suggested 20-25 as an optimum class size. Also, 57% of the teachers were positive about the current size of a classroom($67.5m^2$), but evaluations of a classroom size were divided between the teachers who had more and less than 30 students in class. Furthermore, three factors, labelled as 'uniqueness', 'residential stability' and 'visually pleasing', were extracted from a factor analysis of the Semantic Differential Scale consisting of 24 adjectives evaluating a classroom environment. Teachers from Busan tended to rate higher in the uniqueness domain while female teachers scored higher in the domain of residential stability, respectively, compared to their counterparts. Overall, the teachers perceived their classrooms having no particular characteristics, but rated highly in terms of stability. In addition, it was found out that the teachers' requests for the improvement of a classroom environment were not so much as the increased size of a classroom as a reduced class size as well as educational facilities that are corresponding to a variety of instructional methods. In summary, this study confirmed that elementary school teachers' perceptions of a classroom environment varied according to such factors as sex, teaching career, grade of their concerned class, and class size.

  • Students' engagement is very important for effect science learning. Multidimensional approaches on students' engagement defines engagement in three ways which includes cognitive, behavioral, and cognitive engagement. Based on the multidimensional approaches on students' engagement, this study identified latent groups of elementary students characterized by patterns of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement in science classes. This study also compared students' perceptions of their engagement in general science classes and small-group activities by the latent groups. 377 elementary students were involved in this study. 5-scale Likert survey were used in order to investigate students' engagement in science classes. Latent class analysis using Mplus program identified 3 latent groups of students engagement in science classes: Highly engaged, moderately engaged, and minimally engaged in three ways of engagement. The mean scores of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement were significantly different by three latent groups. In addition, there were significant difference in students perceptions on participating experiments activities and carefully listening of teacher among latent groups. However, there was no significant difference in students' perceptions on their actions during small-group activities. Educational implications were discussed.
