  • Transition metal oxide materials have attracted widespread attention as Li-ion battery electrode materials owing to their high theoretical capacity and good Li storage capability, in addition to various nanostructured materials. Here, we fabricated a CoO Li-ion battery in which Co nanoparticles (NPs) are deposited into a current collector through electrophoretic deposition (EPD) without binding and conductive agents, enabling us to focus on the intrinsic electrochemical properties of CoO during the conversion reaction. Through optimized Co NP synthesis and electrophoretic deposition (EPD), CoO Li-ion battery with 630 mAh/g was fabricated with high cycle stability, which can potentially be used as a test platform for a fundamental understanding of conversion reaction.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted much attention because of their moderate light-to-electricity conversion efficiency, easy fabrication, and low cost. At present, platinum (Pt) is used as a counter electrode in DSSCs. However, it is found that Pt dissolves in iodide electrolyte solutions and creates chemical compound such as PtI4 and H2PtI6. Carbon based materials are one of candidates for a counter electrode of DSSCs. We prepare two types of graphite oxides by different chemical treatments; original graphite oxide, hydrazine treated graphite oxide. Each graphite oxide and magnesium nitrate dispersed in deionized water are prepared as solutions for electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Each graphite oxide electrode is deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate by EPD method. Structural and electrochemical properties of each electrode are investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively.

  • High-temperature superconductor films of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$ were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) from alcohol-based suspension. Maximum stability is observed for the suspension containing iso-alcohol as the dispersion medium. However, for the formation of a dense and adherent coating of YBCO on a silver substrate by EPD, the best results were obtained in mix PrOH and BuOH suspension. The superconducting critical current density (J$_{c}$) was 1200 A/cm$^2$ for a films deposited in 30% iso-PrOH and 70 % iso-BuOH suspension.ion.

  • Black phosphorus (BP) is a potential candidate for an anode in lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and the large interlayer spacing in the monolayered phosphorene form, allowing for lithium intercalation/deintercalation. In this study, large-scale exfoliation of bulk BP was accomplished using a solution of NaOH and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), yielding phosphorene, which can be assembled into nanoflakes using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Through the systematic addition of NaOH and subsequent sonication, BP nanoflakes were obtained in high yields by EPD, allowing for the integration of these nanoflakes into an anode in the film state. Anodes with a charge/discharge capacity of 172 mAh/g at a rate of 200 mA/g were obtained, which are promising for battery applications through various post-film treatments.

  • Restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) continues to be a serious problem in clinical cardiology. To solve this problem, drug eluting stents (DES) with antiproliferative agents have been developed. Variable local drug delivery systems in the context of stenting require the development of stent manufacture, drug pharmacology and coating technology. We have worked on a system that integrates electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technology with the polymeric nanoparticles in DES for local drug delivery and a controlled release system. The surface morphology and drug loading amount of DES by EPD have been investigated under different operational conditions, such as operation time, voltage and the composition of media. We prepared poly-D,L-lactide-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles embedded with curcumin, which was done by a modified spontaneous emulsification method and used polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a surfactant because its carboxylic group contribute negative charge to the surface of CPNPs (?53.5 ± 5.8 mV). In the process of ‘trial and error' endeavors, we found that it is easy to control the drug loading amount deposited onto the stent while keeping uniform surface morphology. Accordingly, stent coating by EPD has a wide application to the modification of DES using various kinds of nanoparticles and drugs.

  • In order to improve the surface uniformity and the conduction properties of the fabricated YBCO thick films, a system that applies alternating field vertically to the EPD field has been developed for the first time and applied to the electrophoretic deposition process. The applied alternating electric field caused a force to be exerted on each YBCO particle and resulted in a shaking of the particle in the direction of applied electric field, accomplishing a uniform particle orientation. The usual commercial electrical power was used for the vertically applied alternating voltage and the induced electric field was 25-120 V/cm at 60Hz. The thick film fabricated by the method developed in this paper showed better surface uniformity without crack and porosity and improved film characteristics such as critical temperature ($T_{c,zero}$ : 90 K) and critical current density ($2354\;A/cm^2$). Therefore, it is expected that the shaky-aligned electrophoretic deposition method can be used to fabricate superconductor films through a simpler process and at less expense.

The applied alternating electric field, so called Shaky Alternating Assisted Field, caused a force to be exerted on each YBCO particle and resulted in a shaking of the particle in the direction of applied electric field, accomplishing a uniform particle orientation. The usual commercial electrical power was used for the vertically applied alternating voltage and the induced electric field was 25-120 V/cm at 60Hz. • Field-emission characteristics of carbon nanotubes(CNTs), which were grown on conical-type tungsten micro-tips by using an electrophoretic deposition(EPD) method, were examined. The EPD method proved to be convenient to manipulate and arrange CNTs from well dispersed suspensions onto such tip-type substrates. The growth rate of CNTs was proportional to the applied d.c. bias voltage and the process time. It was observed from the Raman study that the EPDproduced CNTs showed better crystal qualities with the Raman intensity ratio( $I_D$/$I_G$) of 0.41-0.42 than the CVD-produced CNTs and their crystal qualities could be further improved by thermal annealing. The electron emitters based on the EPDCNTs showed excellent field emission properties, such as the threshold voltage for electron emission of about 620 V and the maximum emission current of about 345 ${\mu}A$. In addition, the EPD-CNTs exhibited the stable long-term(up to 40 h) emission capability and the emission stability was enhanced by thermal annealing.

  • The preparation method of yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) thin film for an anode support type solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) by electrophoretic deposition(EPD) and dip-coating was studied. And the difference in both preparation method was investigated through basic understanding of processing parameters which may significantly affect weight microstruxcture and defect of film. In dip-coating the thickness of film increased with time until 30 s and then the weight of film decreased with time due to particle falling off from the coagulated film. In EPD although the weight of film increased with time and applied constant-current sagging of the film was observed when the applied current was less that 0.035 mA/$cm^2$ and more than 120 s. Since YSZ thin film by EPD on porous substrate was dense smooth and homogeneous it was expected to be suitable for the electrolyte of an anode support type SOFC.

  • Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) is the most convenient technology to deposit natural or oxide powders of nonconductive materials in alcoholic suspension solution with adding electrolyte of iodine to form ceramic thick film on metal substrate under applied electric field with double electric layer between electrode and metal substrate. In this research work, the important parameters and technical ways were studied to form EPD thick films of typical oxide ceramics of Al2O3, YBCO and tourmaline powders.
