We review the evolution of electrochemical studies of conducting polymers into the current state-of-the-art based primarily on our work. While conventional electrochemical experiments sufficed for the needs in the phase of studies of both electrochemical synthesis and characterization of conducting polymers, developments
of various new experimental techniques have led to their introduction to this field for more refined information. As a result, the conventional electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, impedance, and morphological as well as electrical characterization studies all made important contributions to a better understanding of the polymerization mechanisms and the conductive properties of these classes of polymers. From this review, we hereby expect that the electrochemical techniques will continue to play important roles in bringing this field to the practical applications such as nanoscale electronic devices.
Development and discovery of efficient, cost-effective, and robust electrocatalysts are imperative for practical and widespread implementation of water electrolysis and fuel cell techniques in the anticipated hydrogen economy. The electrochemical reactions involved in water electrolysis, i.e., hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, are complex inner-sphere reactions with slow multi-electron transfer kinetics. To develop active electrocatalysts for water electrolysis, the physicochemical properties of the electrode surfaces in electrolyte solutions should be investigated and understood in detail. When electrocatalysis is conducted using nanoparticles with large surface areas and active surface states, analytical techniques with sub-nanometer resolution are required, along with material development. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is an electrochemical technique for studying the surface reactions and properties of various types of electrodes using a very small tip electrode. Recently, the morphological and chemical characteristics of single nanoparticles and bio-enzymes for catalytic reactions were studied with nanometer resolution by combining SECM with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Herein, SECM techniques are briefly reviewed, including the AFM-SECM technique, to facilitate further development and discovery of highly active, cost-effective, and robust electrode materials for efficient electrolysis and photolysis.
A new organic Schiff base compound N-benzylidene-2,5-dichloroaniline (BDC) was synthesized and the structure of the Schiff base is illuminated by some spectroscopic techniques. In addition, whether it is an applicable inhibitor in the industrial field was examined by conventional methods such as linear polarization resistance (LPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization for different concentrations. The BDC concentration and temperature effects were surveyed for elucidating the inhibitive mechanism. The BDC molecules are adsorbed to surface of mild steel via the Langmuir isotherm. Atomic force (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were utilized to give insight into surface characterization.
Silicon surface nanostructures, which can be easily prepared by electrochemical etching, have attracted considerable attention because of its useful physical properties that facilitate application in diverse fields. In this work, electrochemical and electrochemical-scanning tunneling microscopic (EC-STM) techniques were employed to study the evolution of surface morphology during the electrochemical etching of Si(111)-H in a fluoride solution. The results exhibited that silicon oxide of the Si(111) surface was entirely stripped and then the surface became hydrogen terminated, atomically flat, and anisotropic in the fluoride solution during chemical etching. At the potential more negative than the flat band one, the surface had a tendency to be eroded very slowly, whereas the steps of the terrace were not only etched quickly but the triangular pits also deepened on anodic potentials. These results provided information on the conditions required for the preparation of porous nanostructures on the Si(111) surface, which may be applicable for sensor (or device) preparation (Nanotechnology and Functional Materials for Engineers, Elsevier 2017, pp. 67-91).
Electrochemical phenomena underpin a broad spectrum of energy, chemical, and information technologies such as resistive memories and secondary batteries. The optimization of functionalities in these devices requires understanding electrochemical mechanisms on the nanoscale. Even though the nanoscale electrochemical phenomena have been studied by electron microscopies, these methods are limited for analyzing dynamic electrochemical behavior and there is still lack of information on the nanoscale electrochemical mechanisms. The alternative way can be an atomic force microscopy (AFM) because AFM allows nanoscale measurements and, furthermore, electrochemical reaction can be controlled by an application of electric field through AFM tip. Here, I will summarize recent studies to probe nanoscale electrochemical reaction in battery applications by AFM. In particular, we have recently developed electromechanical based AFM techniques for exploring reversible and irreversible electrochemical phenomena on the nanoscale. The present work suggests new strategies to explore fundamental electrochemical mechanisms using the AFM approach and eventually will provide a powerful paradigm for probing spatially resolved electrochemical information for energy applications.
Electrochemical energy-storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors are important components in emerging portable electronic device, electric vehicle, and clean energy storage and supply technologies. This review describes recent progress in the development of nanostructured electrodes, the main component of the electrochemical energy-storage device, prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic assembly. Major advantages associated with, and challenges to, the fabrication of LbL electrodes, as well as the future outlook for expanding the application of LbL techniques, are discussed.
This paper reviews available techniques for monitoring corrosion of steel in concrete. The need for early detection and diagnosis of corrosion related deterioration in reinforced structures is widely acknowledged. This is particularly important in reinforced concrete structures on account of the economic and social significance of the problem. The current generally used on-site procedure for corrosion monitoring of reinforced structures employs a method of half-cell surface potential measurements. While the technique has provided a useful means of delineating areas of high or low corrosion risk, there are difficulties in its use and interpretation when assessing rates of deterioration. Electrochemical techniques are by far the most suitable for corrosion monitoring purpose and meet most of the requirements. The aim of this paper is to describe the electric resistance sensor(ER sensor) and electrochemical techniques employed to monitor and estimate corrosion rates of reinforcement. Early detection and diagnosis of corrosion hazards allows preventive measures to be taken, hence the typically expensive repair of severely deteriorated structures can be avoided.

Stainless steels and titanium alloys are widely used in the medical industry as replacement materials. These materials may be affected by the conditions and type of environment. In the same manner, soft drinks are widely consumed products. It is of interest for dental industry to know the behavior of medical-grade alloys when these are in contact with soft drinks, since any excessive ion release can suppose a risk for human health. In the present study, the electrochemical behavior of three stainless steel alloys and pure titanium was analyzed using three types of cola soft drinks as electrolyte. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of these metallic materials in each type of solution (cola standard, light and zero). Different electrochemical techniques were used for the evaluation of the alloys, namely potentiodynamic polarization, linear polarization, and open-circuit potential measurements. The corrosion resistance of the stainless-steel alloys and titanium in the cola soft drinks was provided by the formation of a stable passive film formed by metal oxides. Scanning electron microscopy was used as a complementary technique to reveal corrosion phenomena at the surface of the materials evaluated.
