Photonic-Assisted Reactive-Near-Field Analysis of a 3 dB-Tapered Ka-Band Array Antenna

  • A Ka-band microstrip array antenna for wide-range detection of moving targets is analyzed through a photonicassisted reactive-near-field characterization technique. The antenna array employs a 3-dB-tapered feed network to suppress the sidelobe level while retaining a wide azimuth beamwidth for a wide detection range. The relative nearelectric field patterns of the array and its 3-dB-tapered feed lines have been measured using an electro-optic fieldmapping technique for minimally invasive millimeter-wave sensing. A number of typical limitations on the technique, involving bandwidth, low signal-modulation depth, and high laser-induced noise in high-frequency applications, have been overcome by suppressing the carrier portion of the optical interrogation beam.

  • Electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by fringe field using a nematic LC with positive dielectric anisotropy have been studied. Optimized optical configurations are achieved by using a single polarizer, half-wave film and a cell with quarter-wave retardation. The simulation results shows an optimum cell retardation of $0.30{\mu}m$. This value may allow a practical cell gap larger than $3{\mu}m$, which makes it easy to control in the manufacturing process. Furthermore, this LC cell with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $100{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160{\circ}$ in horizontal direction. Also, when using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy rather than negative dielectric anisotropy, the display shows low power consumption and fast response time.

Synthesis and Characterization of Dendritic Nonlinear Optical Chromophore Containing Phenylene Attached with Bulky Alkyl Group

  • Star-shaped, nonlinear optical (NLO) material was synthesized and its optical, thermal, and electro-optic properties were investigated. Three NLO-active dipolar chromophores containing a phenylene ring substituted with a bulky alkyl chain as a conjugation bridge were chemically bonded to the core of 1,1,1-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane to form a dendritic architecture. The chemical structure and purity of the chromophore were verified by NMR spectroscopy. The chromophore exhibited a broad absorption band centered at around 608 nm tailing up to 760 nm in toluene solution and also showed a discernible solvatochromic shift in more polar solvent. The chloroform solution of the dendrimer produced an absorption band with a red-shifted maximum as large as 28 nm when compared to that of the toluene solution. It was thermally stable up to $275^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere and had a glass transition temperature of $76^{\circ}C$. In a preliminary result, the polymer film containing the dendritic compound exhibited a shift of 19 pm/V taken at $1.55{\mu}$.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics as a function of passivation thickness existing between common electrode and pixel electrodes in the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy. A steep increase in the transmission is observed with increase in the passivation layer from $0.29{\mu}m$ to $1.09{\mu}m$ and thereafter it almost saturates over the $1.09{\mu}m$ of passivation layer. This saturation is mainly associated with correlation between transmittance at the center region of pixel electrode and at the center region between pixel electrodes. From the results, optimal thickness of passivation layer can be defined.

  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal displays driven by fringe field. The results show that the optimal retardation value of the cell is $0.289{\mu}m$, which allows for the cell to have a practical cell gap of larger than $3{\mu}m$ when manufacturing. A reflectance of the dark state is only 0.114% for an incident light 550nm. At this condition, the light efficiency of white state reaches 92.7%. Further, we have studied a new reflective display with polarizer, optical compensation with half plate, LC plus reflector. The display with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $120^{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160^{\circ}$ in horizontal direction.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of a high performance liquid crystal display using Fringe In-plane field Switching (FIS) mode. The strong electric fields cause more liquid crystals to reorient almost in plane above and between the pixel electrodes. As a result, the operation voltage is lower and transmittance is higher than those of Fringe Field Switching (FFS) and In-Plane Switching (IPS) modes. Apparently, the transmittance depends on voltage applied at the configurations of FIS mode which are proposed. Therefore, we have studied certain length of between electrodes for maximum transmittance and light intensity.

  • The electronic speckle pattern interferometer (ESPI) has been applied to many technical problems such as deformation and displacement measurement, strain visualization and surface roughness monitoring. In this study, we used an ESPI system based on the dual beam speckle interferometer method in order to measure in-plane displacement and vibration mode using the ESIP technique. This research was carried out for the purpose of applying the vibration analysis method employing Electro-Optic holographic interference technique to the vibration analysis of uniform rectangular cantilevers plate(SS400,STS304) with cantilevers span to breadth ratio of 150 by 75. And thickness of 1mm and 0.8mm respectively. We improved the ESPI technique in order to obtain the distribution of displacement component resolved in one direction through a CCD camera combined with an image processing system. To certify and to assess the accuracy in measuring by this ESPI, the results obtained with the speckle method and vibration mode analysis are to be compared with those results by Warbuton's Theoretical expression and vibration made in FEM analysis.

  • 액정층을 지나는 빛의 편광상태의 변화를 뽀앙카레공에서의 회전변환으로 나타내어, 액정층에 걸어준 전압에 대한 회전변환이 회전각과 회전축의 변화를 쟀다. 이로부터 액정셀에 걸린 전압이 비선택전압에서 선택전압으로 바뀔 때의 회전변환의 회전각이 $180^{\circ}$에 가장 가까운 구동전압을 결정하고, 이 전압으로 액정셀을 구동할 때 화면의 콘트라스트 및 투과율이 최대가 되는 현광판과 검광판의 투과축의 방향을 회전변환의 일반적인 특성을 써서 결정하고 실험적으로 확인하였다.
