  • This study was conducted to empirically verify the factors that affect work-life balance according to the age of social workers. The subjects of the study were social workers working at social welfare centers, welfare centers for the disabled, and welfare centers for the elderly located in Jeollabuk-do, and 313 copies of 42 facilities that participated in the survey were used for the final analysis. The research method used a multi-level model that calculated individual factors (Level 1) and institutional factors (Level 2). The main research results are as follows. First, 20.2% of the total variance in the work-life balance of social workers was found to be different for each local welfare center. Second, as a result of examining the factors affecting work-life balance of social workers by age, it was found that job demands had a negative effect on work-life balance in all age groups. In particular, in their 30s, family demands and women's work-life balance were more negative than men's, and economic status was found to be an important influencing factor on work-life balance. Based on these results, we discussed ways to improve work-life balance for social workers.

  • Background: This study aimed to analyze correlations between depression, cognitive function, oral health state, ability to perform activities of daily living, oral dryness symptoms, and oral health-related quality of life, and determine factors influencing the latter. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on questionnaires completed by 260 participants with suspected dementia, residing in South Korea. Psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and dental hygienists visited clinics in the participating regions for examination and questionnaire administration. General characteristics, the geriatric depression scale, ability to perform activities of daily living, cognitive function, oral health state, and oral health-related quality of life were analyzed. Independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted, identifying factors affecting oral health-related quality of life. Data analysis was performed using SPSS ver. 20.0 (IBM Corp., USA), and the significance was set at p<0.05. Results: Approximately 65.0% of participants were female, 63.5% were in their 70s, and 90.0% had health insurance. About 21.5%, 42.0%, and 36.5% were normal, slightly impaired, and had dementia, respectively. High cognitive impairment was associated with poor oral health. Sex, education levels, marital status, and living arrangements influenced oral health-related quality of life. According to the regression analysis, geriatric depression and oral dryness affected the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index scores. Conclusion: In conclusion, oral dryness and depression levels among elders influenced oral health-related quality of life. The results showed that to enhance elders' oral health-related quality of life, it is essential to not only improve their oral health state, but also relieve oral health problems, especially oral dryness, and take into consideration their psychological aspects.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate antioxidant activity of yanggaeng containing herbal medicine extracts (YH) by employing various in vitro antioxidant assays for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) free radical scavenging, and reducing power. We also investigated moisture content, pH, texture profile, and sugar content, and evaluated the sensory characteristics of developed yanggaengs. Moisture content of YH was 41.54%. Sugar contents increased while pH decreased as content of herbal medicine extracts increased. Lightness was not significantly different between YH and control. However, herbal medicine extracts enhanced the redness of yanggaeng. Texture profile analysis showed that gumminess and chewiness of yanggaeng added with herbal medicine extracts decreased compared to control. Herbal medicine extracts enhanced yanggaeng's antioxidant activity, reducing power, and scavenging ability. Herbal medicine extracts enhanced antioxidant properties of yanggaeng and made it easier to swallow.

  • Projection of cancer incidence is essential for planning cancer control actions, health care and allocation of resources. Here we project the cancer burden at the National and State level to understand the magnitude of cancer problem for the various calendar years from 2011 to 2026 at 5-yearly intervals. The age, sex and site-wise cancer incidence data along with populations covered by the registries were obtained from the report of National Cancer Registry Programme published by Indian Council of Medical Research for the period 2001-2004. Pooled age sex specific cancer incidence rates were obtained by taking weighted averages of these seventeen registries with respective registry populations as weights. The pooled incidence rates were assumed to represent the country's incidence rates. Populations of the country according to age and sex exposed to the risk of development of cancer in different calendar years were obtained from the report of Registrar General of India providing population projections for the country for the years from 2001 to 2026. Population forecasts were combined with the pooled incidence rates to estimate the projected number of cancer cases by age, sex and site of cancer at various 5-yearly periods Viz. 2011, 2016, 2021 and 2026. The projections were carried out for the various leading sites as well as for 'all sites' of cancer. In India, in 2011, nearly 1,193,000 new cancer cases were estimated; a higher load among females (603,500) than males (589,800) was noted. It is estimated that the total number of new cases in males will increased from 0.589 million in 2011 to 0.934 million by the year 2026. In females the new cases of cancer increased from 0.603 to 0.935 million. Three top most occurring cancers namely those of tobacco related cancers in both sexes, breast and cervical cancers in women account for over 50 to 60 percent of all cancers. When adjustments for increasing tobacco habits and increasing trends in many cancers are made, the estimates may further increase. The leading sites of cancers in males are lung, oesophagus, larynx, mouth, tongue and in females breast and cervix uteri. The main factors contributing to high burden of cancer over the years are increase in the population size as well as increase in proportion of elderly population, urbanization, and globalization. The cancer incidence results show an urgent need for strengthening and augmenting the existing diagnostic/treatment facilities, which are inadequate even to tackle the present load.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether 12-weeks of movement training would increase the psoas major cross-sectional area (CSA) in senior men and women. Fifty eight men and women aged 65 to 80 years old ($69.6{\pm}3.7$, 30 male, 28 female) were divided into a control (n=19) and exercise group (n=39). Subjects were assessed before and after the training program for stature, body mass, and magnetic resonance imaging of the psoas major and the quadriceps muscle. The experimental group performed exercises using machines designed to improve the movement of the hip at a frequency of twice every week, with a total of 23 trainings in 12-weeks. Magnetic resonance images of both thighs and the abdomen and psoas major were obtained, aimed at 50% of the length of the greater trochanter and the lower edge of the femur and between the fourth (L4) and fifth (L5) lumbars. A 9.4% increase in the psoas major CSA in the training group was observed. In the male and female breakdown, a 11.5% and 8.4% change was observed in males and females, respectively. In the quadriceps, there was no significant statistical improvement in either males or females. Furthermore, in the control group, there was no significant change seen in either the psoas major or the quadriceps. As a result of conducting training that enables upkeep of posture and smooth linkage of the lumbar spine, the pelvis and thighbone, the psoas major CSA of older adults were improved in a short period of time. For this reason, the possibility of improving the psoas CSA, which decreases remarkably with increased age, by improving the linkage of the body trunk is also suggested.

  • Objective: Overactive bladder syndrome refers to the symptom of frequent urination, as the function of the bladder is so sensitive that the bladder muscles contract regardless of the patient's intent and the patient feels the need to urinate quickly. Overactive bladder syndrome is common among the elderly, especially in women, and the prevalence increases with increasing age. Overactive bladder can decrease social activity, increase isolation, and decrease quality of life due to sleep disorders caused by night urination; therefore, active treatment is required. In this study, we report the effects of Korean medical treatment on a Korean hospital patient with overactive bladder symptoms, including urine frequency, urine incontinence, and night urination that began at a similar time to an onset of coughing. Methods: We treated the patient with herbal medicines and acupuncture therapy. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS), and a numeric rating scale (NRS) were used to assess symptom changes. Results: The patient with urine frequency, urine incontinence, and nocturia was hospitalized for 8 days, and the overall symptoms of overactive bladder syndrome were improved. Conclusion: The results indicate that Korean medical treatment is effective in patients with overactive bladder syndrome.
