  • Evaluation of accurate design moments in two directions is a primary concern in designing R/C Slab. For this purpose, the use of finite element method utilizing isoparametric plate element is proposed. An example of the simply supported slab shows that the results agree well wth those from elastic plate theory throughout the span. The finite element solutions are also compared with those from equivalent frame method in a flat plate example. It is indicated that the distribution of total moment through the width of design strip using the ACI coefficients is unreasonable. In contrary to this, for the same strip model, the finite element method gives accurate moments in two directions. The proposed method can be applied to any geometric configuration of the slab system, thus the approach is considered to be much advantageous and improved one compared with existing methods.

  • Various failure modes occur in the concrete beams reinforced with GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) under initial condition and repairing patterns. In this study, the failure behaviors of concrete beams restrengthened with GFRP sheet with slightly higher elastic modulus than concrete were investigated. For the tests, concrete beams with 24 MPa were manufactured, and the effects of initial notch, overlapping, end-strip reinforcement, and fiber anchors were analyzed on failure load. The cases of GFRP overlap around notch and the initial notch showed increasing failure loads similar to those of normal restrengthened case since the epoxy of the saturated GFRP sufficiently repaired the notch area. Compared to the control case without restrengthening of GFRP, the concrete with initial notch showed 0.78 of loading ratio and normal restrengthening showed 4.43~5.61 times of increasing ratio of failure loading, where interface-debonding from flexural crack were mainly observed. The most ideal failure behavior, break of GFRP, was observed when end-strip over 1/3 height from bottom and fiber anchor were installed, which showed increasing failure load over 150 % to normal restrengthening.

  • The aeroelastic stability analysis of composite bearingless rotors is investigated using a large deflection beam theory in hover. The bearingless rotor configuration consists of a single flexbeam with a wrap-around type torque tube and the pitch links located at the leading edge and trailing edge of the torque tube. The outboard main blade, flexbeam and torque tube are all assumed to be an elastic beam undergoing flap bending, lead-lag bending, elastic twist and axial deflections, which are discretized into beam finite elements. For the analysis of composite bearingless rotors, flexbeam is assumed to be a rectangular section made of laminate. Two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory is used for aerodynamic computation. The finite element equations of motion for beams are obtained from Hamilton's principle. The p-k method is used to determine aeroelastic stability boundary. Numerical results are presented for selected bearingless rotor configurations based on the lay-up of laminae in the flexbeam and pitch links location. A systematic study is made to identify the importance of the stiffness coupling terms on aeroelastic stability for various fiber orientation and for different configuration.

  • In this work, the effect of composite couplings on hub loads of a hingeless rotor in forward flight is investigated. The hingeless composite rotor blade is idealized as a laminated thin-walled box-beam. The nonclassical effects such as transverse shear, torsional warping are considered in the structural formulation. The nonlinear differential equations of motion are obtained by applying Hamilton's principle. The blade response and hub loads are calculated using a finite element formulation in space and time. The aerodynamic forces acting on the blade are calculated by quasi-steady strip theory. The theory includes the effects of reversed flow and compressibility. The magnitude of elastic couplings obtained by MSC/NASTRAN is compared with the classical pitch-flap $({\delta}3)$ or $pitch-lag({\alpha}1)$ coupling. It is found that the elastic couplings have a substantial effect on the behavior of $N_b/rev$ hub loads. Nearly 10 to 40% of hub loads is reduced by appropriately tailoring the fiber orientation angles in the laminae of the composite blade.

  • The possibility of adopting vibration-powered wireless nodes has been largely investigated in the last years. Among the available technologies based on the piezoelectric effect, the most common ones consist of a vibrating beam covered by electroactive layers. Another energy harvesting strategy is based on the use of piezoelectric strips attached to a hosting structure subjected to dynamic loads. The hosting structure, for example, can be the system to be equipped with wireless nodes. Such strategy has received few attentions so far and no analytical studies have been presented yet. Hence, the original contribution of the present paper is concerned with the development of analytical solutions for the electrodynamic analysis and design of piezoelectric polymeric strips attached to relatively large linear elastic structural systems subjected to random vibrations at the base. Specifically, it is assumed that the dynamics of the hosting structure is dominated by the fundamental vibration mode only, and thus it is reduced to a linear elastic single-degree-of-freedom system. On the other hand, the random excitation at the base of the hosting structure is simulated by filtering a white Gaussian noise through a linear second-order filter. The electromechanical force exerted by the polymeric strip is negligible compared with other forces generated by the large hosting structure to which it is attached. By assuming a simplified electrical interface, useful new exact analytical expressions are derived to assess the generated electric power and the integrity of the harvester as well as to facilitate its optimum design.

  • Local buckling is a major consideration in the design of thin-walled cold-formed steel sections. The main effect of local buckling in plate elements under longitudinal compressive stresses is to cause a redistribution of the stresses in which the greatest portion of the load is carried near the supporting edges of the plate junctions. The redistribution produces increased stresses near the plate junctions and high bending stresses as a result of plate flexure, leading to ultimate loads below the squash load of the section. In singly symmetric cross-sections, the redistribution of longitudinal stress caused by local buckling also produces a shift of the line of action of internal force (shift of effective centroid). The fundamentally different effects of local buckling on the behaviour of pin-ended and fixed-ended singly symmetric columns lead to inconsistencies in traditional design approaches. The paper describes local buckling and shift of effective centroid of thin-walled cold-formed steel channel columns. Tests of channel columns have been described. The experimental local buckling loads were compared with the theoretical local buckling loads obtained using an elastic finite strip buckling analysis. The shift of the effective centroid was also compared with the shift predicted using the Australian/New Zealand and American specifications for cold-formed steel structures.

  • This paper is an experimental and numerical work of Investigating the bearing capacity of shallow foundation of rubble mound under eccentric loads. Parametric centrifuge model tests at the 50g level environments with the model footings in the form of strip footing were performed by changing the loading location of model footing, relative density and materials for ground foundation. For the model ground, crushed rock sampled from a rocky mountain was prepared with a grain size distribution of having an identical coefficient of uniformity to the field condition. Model ground was also prepared with relative densities of 50 % and 80 %. For loading condition, model tests with and without eccentric load were carned out to investigate the effect of eccentric loads and a numerical analysis with the commertially available software of FLAC was performed. For numerical estimation with FLAC, the hyperbolic model of a nonlinear elastic constitutive relationship was used to simulate the stress-stram constitutive relationship of model ground and a series of triaxial compression test were carried out to find the parameters for this model Test results were analyzed and compared with Meyerhof method (1963), effective area method based on the limit equilibrium method, and a numerical analysis with FLAC.

  • A kinematic analysis method has been used as analysis method for dynamic behavior of moving parts of vehicle, especially hood part. Such analysis method, however, has its limitations in terms of design technology, including, over travel of hood that occurs due to lack of considerations of compliance characteristics, such as flexible components of hood's weather strip and over slam bumper. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a modeling which reflects compliance of flexible components of hood and elastic characteristics of panel for improvement of design process. In this thesis, a finite element method as mentioned earlier, is developed to represent over travel of hood. Also optimization process applying sequential approximate optimization is suggested to prevent over travel. The over travel analysis method and optimization process, which are developed through the research, would make it possible to design with high quality and credibility. Furthermore, it is expected that the time for design would be reduced and the design quality also improved.

  • As the springback of sheet metal during unloading nay cause deviation from a desired shape, accurate prediction of springback is essential for the design of sheet stamping operations. On the removal of the applied load the specimen loses its elastic strain by contracting around the contour of the block, the radius $\rho$ can be determined by the residual differential strain. Therefore in this study the springback estimated by the residual differential strain is experimentally validated through the comparison with those obtained by U-bending test. The springback characteristics of two analytical models are also estimated at various processing conditions such as thickness, curvature of radius and drawing strain. The model based on residual differential strain has an applied transition strain where the springback undergoes a dramatic decrease. Both models show that springback decreases with increased strip thickness and with decreased radius of curvature. For no applied tension, the model based on residual differential strain predicts more springback as compared to the moment based model.

  • The roll-forming process is a highly productive incremental forming process and is suitable for manufacturing thin, high-strength steel products. Recently, this process has been considered one of the most productive processes in manufacturing high-strength steel automotive structural parts. However, it is very difficult to develop the roll-forming process when the cross-sectional shape of the product changes in the longitudinal direction. In this study, a roll-forming process for manufacturing high-strength steel automotive parts with a linearly variable symmetric hat-type cross-section was developed. The forming rolls were designed by the 3D CAD system, CATIA. Additionally, the designed forming rolls were modified by the simulation through the 3D elastic-plastic finite element analysis software, MARC. The results of the finite element analysis show that the final roll-forming roll can successfully produce the desired high-strength steel automotive part with a variable cross-section.
