  • This study presents a elastic parabolic cable element for initial shaping analysis of cable structures. First, the compatibility condition and the tangent stiffness matrices of the elastic catenary cable element are shortly summarized. Next the force-deformation relations and the tangent stiffness matrices of the elastic parabolic cable elements are derived from the assumption that sag configuration under self-weights is small. To confirm the accuracy of this element, initial shaping analysis of cable-stayed bridges under dead loads is executed. Finally, the accuracy and the validity of the analysis-results are compared and analyzed through numerical examples.

  • Determining limit load for a pressure bearing structure using elastic-plastic finite element analysis was computationally very expensive. A series of robust methods using elastic modulus adjustment techniques (EMAP) to identify the limit load directly were proposed. The numerical implementation of the robust method had the potential to be an attractive alternative to elastic-plastic finite element analysis since it was simple, and required less computational effort and computer storage space. Another attractive feature was that the method provided a go/no go criterion for the limit load, whereas the results of an elastic-plastic analysis were often difficult to interpret near the limit load since it came from human sources. To explore the performance of the method further, it was applied to a number of configurations that include two-dimensional and three-dimensional effects. In this study, limit load of cylinder with nozzle was determined by the robust methods.

  • An advanced time-domain finite element formulation is presented for the displacement and stress analysis of isotropic, linear viscoelastic problems of a hereditary-type constitutive law. The semidiscrete finite element method with linear time-stepping scheme and an elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle are used in the theoretical development. An efficient treatment of hereditary integral is introduced to improve the numerical accuracy, to reduce the computation time, and to avoid the use of large memory storage. Two-dimensional numerical examples of plane strain and plane stress are solved under the assumption on the material property of being elastic in dilatation and like three-element Voigt model in distorsion, and compared with the analytical solutions and the past numerical results to show the versatility and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • Finite element analysis of welding processes, which entail phase evolution, heat transfer and deformation, is considered in this paper. Attention focuses on numerical implementation of the thermo-elastic-plastic constitutive equation proposed by Leblond et al in consideration of the transformation plasticity. Based upon the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient, hyperelastic formulation is employed for efficient numerical integration, and the algorithmic consistent moduli for elastic-plastic deformations including transformation plasticity are obtained in the closed form. The convergence behavior of the present implementation is demonstrated via a couple of numerical examples. Several locking phenomena removed by Solid-shell element.

  • A neural network approach has been developed to determine the depth of a surface breaking crack in a steel plate from ultrasonic backscattering data. The network is trained by the use of feedforward three-layered network together with a back-scattering algorithm for error correction. The signal used for crack insonification is a mode converted 70$^{\circ}$transverse wave. A numerical analysis of back scattered field is carried out based on elastic wave theory, by the use of the boundary element method. The numerical data are calibrated by comparison with experimental data. The numerical analysis provides synthetic data for the training of the network. The training data have been calculated for cracks with specified increments of the crack depth. The performance of the network has been tested on other synthetic data and experimental data which are different from the training data.

  • Precise and accurate pressure measurements are obtained using deadweight piston gauges. Pressure distribution and elastic distortion in the piston-cylinder unit are the leading factors in determination of effective area. The distortion depends upon the pressure distribution in the clearance between piston and cylinder and those are coupled each other. Considering the viscosity pressure relation of oil and governing flow equation in the clearance, a new numerical iterative algorithm is developed. The disagreement between the monotonous and sharp pressure profiles is an indication that the pressure profile will be different for each piston and cylinder unit due to material variances.

  • An energy method has been used for an elastic formulation of bending vibration and buckling analysis of laminated composite plates on two-parameter elastic foundations. A quasi-elastic method is used for the solution of viscoelastic analysis of the laminated composite plates. The third-order shear deformation theory is applied by using the double-fourier series. To validate the derived equations the obtained displacements for simply supported orthotropic plates on elastic foundations are compared with those of LUSAS program Numerical results of the viscoelastic bending vibration and buckling analysis are presented to show the effects of layup sequence number of layers material anisotropy and shear modulus of foundations.

  • Steel suspension members subjected to tension and bending offer an economical and efficient alternative for many structural problems. This paper is concerned with the elastic and elastic-plastic behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness subjected to vertical point and uniformly distributed loads. An experimental study is described which focuses on the response of three suspension members with various T-shaped steel hot rolled sections and geometric configurations. The tests enable direct assessment of the influence of a key parameter such as the sag-to-span ratio on the response of suspension members. Detailed nonlinear finite-element models are generated to provide a tool for theoretical analyses and to facilitate further understanding of the behaviour. Results demonstrate that experimentally obtained responses can generally be closely predicted numerically because there are relatively good agreements between finite element and tests results. The results and observations of subsequent numerical parametric studies offer an insight into the key factors that govern the behaviour of suspension members with bending stiffness in the elastic-plastic range.

  • The liquid sloshing in an elastic tank is a fluid-structure interaction problem. It requires nonlinear analysis to solve the complicated physics involved in the large interaction of fluid-structure, the variation of dynamic characteristics of structure due to hydrodynamic loading, and the distorsion of fluid flow due to structural vibration. In this paper a Lagrangian FEM is introduced to analyze the liquid sloshing in an elastic tank assuming that the elastic wall is one degree of freedom rigid wall. Numerical integration is performed using an implicit-explicit algorithm, which is formed by mixing the predictor-corrector method and the Runge-Kutta 4th order method. The influence of dynamic characteristics of the sloshing tank on the fluid flow is discussed. The numerical method is also applied for the simulation of the wall generated wave in the tank.

  • Die desig for manufacturing hooks from steel wires has been depended on empirical procedures based on trial and error method. To design die, at first the curvature and bending angle of hook are computed by using AutoCAD and developed program which is composed of Visual Basic. Then spring back should be considered because the elastic recovery of material is very important in bending process. In this study, bending analysis of elastic-plastic materials is applied to predict curvature of hook and spring back. Therefore, systematic procedure of die design for bending hook is achieved to consider elastic recovery in terms of hook shapes. Experimental results are good agreement with calculated results.
