Purpose: This descriptive survey study assesses the extent of empathic competence, occupational stress, and ego-resilience of nurses, and confirms factors that affect ego-resilience in order to provide basic data for the competency development program for nurses. Methods: Data obtained from the questionnaire survey conducted with 193 nurses were analyzed by means of t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient and Multiple Regression. Results: Empathic competence, in accordance with the general characteristics of nurses, displayed statistically significant differences in terms of final academic background. Further, occupational stress and ego-resilience displayed statistically significant differences related to the nurses' department of employment, age, and total clinical experiences, respectively. Empathic competence and ego-resilience have a significant positive correlation, and age and empathic competence were found to be the factors that impart influence on ego-resilience. Conclusion: The enhancement of empathic competence of nurses has affirmative effects on the satisfaction of patients with their nurses, and it also improves the ego-resilience of nurses. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and apply career training program aimed at enhancing the empathic competence of nurses as an in-service educational program.

Method: A Hybrid Model of concept development was applied to develop a concept of ego-integrity, which included a field study carried out in Seoul, South Korea using in-depth interviews with old adults who were admitted as a right person for research subject according to attributes of ego-integrity analysed in the theoretical phase. Results: The concept of ego-integrity emerged as a complex phenomenon having meanings in several different dimensions which encompassed several attributes. Conclusions: Ego-integrity is a concept having needs that should be treated in a specific way and it is possible to enrich the meaning and methods to manage ego-integrity in nursing interventions for promoting quality of life so that its application may have effects that have positive impacts on the elderly's well being.

The objective of this study is to examine the influence of social support and ego-resilience on the burnout of infant teachers. 200 teachers from a children's day care center located in Jeju Island were selected as the subjects, with whom a survey was conducted using the criteria of social support, ego-resilience, and burnout. The data was analyzed by correlation and hierarchical analysis using the SPSS 18.0 program. The results were as follows. Firstly, the teachers' exhaustion level was low, whereas their ego-resilience level was high. Secondly, the higher their social support and ego-resilience were, the lower their exhaustion level became. Finally, in the review of the influence of social support and ego-resilience on exhaustion, ego-resilience explained more than social support. This finding suggests that teachers' ego-resilience and social support are the key factors affecting burnout. To reduce burnout, the development of educational programs to enhance the teachers' ego-resilience and social support is strongly recommended.

This study investigated the relationship between ego identity within the framework of Erikson's psychosocial theory of ego development and self-perceptions of dressing competence and dressing conformity. The following problems have been investigated in this study. 1. The relationship between ego identity and self-perceptions of dressing competence. 2. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to develop a cognitive behavioral therapy program for ego-integrity of depressed elderly women living alone, and to verify its effectiveness. Method: The subjects of this study were composed of elderly women(age 65 and older) living alone who had basic literacy skills, 24 or higher in mental state examination(MMSE-K), and 6 or higher in elderly depression(GDS). 29 women were randomly assigned into an experimental group(cognitive behavioral therapy), a comparison group(reminiscence therapy) and a control group. The experimental group and the comparison group retrospectively participated in a 90-minute therapy session twice a week for a total of 12 weeks. The effectiveness of the program was assessed through a pretest, posttest, and 2-month follow-up test. The data collected were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 statistical program. Results: The main findings of this study are as follows. First, at posttest ego-integrity and self-esteem marked higher scores in both of the experimental group and the comparison group than in the control group, but the experimental group marked comparatively higher scores than the comparison group. For dysfunctional attitude, only the experimental group showed lower scores compared to the comparison group and the control group. Second, at posttest depression marked lower scores in the experimental group compared to the comparison group and the control group. Third, at posttest problem-solving and support-seeking coping strategies marked higher scores in the experimental group compared to the comparison group and the control group. Fourth, the significant improvements remained at 2-month follow-up test. Conclusions: Cognitive behavioral therapy resulted in improvements of the ego-integrity and related symptoms of depressed elderly women living alone at posttest and 2-month follow-up test respectively.
The purpose of this study was to investigate ego-resilience and social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care. The study also investigated the protective factors and the risk factors on ego-resilience and social adaptability and their relationship. The subjects in this study were 140 children and adolescents in institutional care. The research data were analyzed using Frequency, Pearson's Correlation, Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis and T-Test in SPSS WIN 10.0 program. The major findings were as follows. First, ego-resilience of the children and adolescents in institutional care was related to locus of control, depression and anxiety and unsatisfaction of institutional care. Result of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that depression and anxiety and locus of control in the order had significant effects on ego-resilience. Second, social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care was related to social support and parent-child bond. Unsatisfaction of institutional care and social support in the order had significant effects on social adaptability by stepwise multiple regression analysis. Third, the children and adolescents who had higher level of ego-resilience reported better social adaptability. The overall research results revealed that the risk factors such as unsatisfaction of institutional care and depression and anxiety than the protective factors had more significant effects on ego-resilience and social adaptability of children and adolescents in institutional care. This finding suggested that elimination of risk factors rather than development of protective factors was a more important task for the welfare of children and adolescents in institutional care.

This study introduces the possibility of the $9^{th}$ stage by Joan Erikson by adding Erikson's original theory of the $8^{th}$ stage and validates the gerotranscendece scale in later life. For this, 10 items from Erikson's scale was examined and the relationships among gerotranscendence, ego-integrity, and wisdom were examined using a sample of 244 elderly individuals over the age of 60. According to the results, the measurement of gerotranscendence based on Erikson was applicable to the Korean sample. In addition, ego-integrity and wisdom influenced gerotranscendence in later life. Based on these results, the validity of gerotranscedence, psychosocial development in the $9^{th}$ stage, discussed and the utility of Erikson's theory is emphasized.
