  • Constant-load-amplitude fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on 5083-0 aluminum alloy under elastic and elastic-plastic conditions. Crack length, crack closure and monotonic fatigue deformation were measured by Kikukawa's unloading elastic compliance monitoring technique and elastic-plastic fatigue crack growth rates were analysed in terms of J integral. Elastic-plastic fatigue crack growth rates can be well expressed by effective cyclic J integral until general yielding occurs. Beyond general yielding, monotonic fatigue deformation becomes significant and growth rates cannot be characterized by a single parameter of effective cyclic J integral alone. However, introducing one more parameter, maximum J integral J$_{max}$ to account for the effect of monotonic fatigue deformation, can explain fatigue crack growth behavior beyond general yielding.

  • Despite of outstanding optical performance of glass lens, glass lens have not been widely used because of poor productivity and high cost due to manufacturing process i.e. grinding, polishing. However, press-forming method of glass lens overcomes this disadvantage because of mass production. When glass lens is produced by press-forming method using closed die, it is needed that the volume of glass lens preform precisely measured in order to prevent incomplete products and to increase in life of die. The present paper shows the shortcoming of forming process with closed die, and performs FEM simulation of forming process with open die in order to overcome this shortcoming. The design parameter of open die is selected in standard of assembly with optical module and maintenance of optical performance. FEM simulation is carried out with selected parameter of open die and two basic preform. According to distribution of effective strain in glass lens, optical property of glass lens formed at each set of die and preform is compared.

  • This paper, Part 1, describes the effective dual-input PSS parameter design procedure for the IEEE Type PSS2A against the Dangjin 612 MVA thermal plant's EX2000 excitation system. The suggested tuning technique used the model-based PSS tuning method and consisted of three steps: 1) generation system modeling; 2) determination of PSS2A model parameters using linear, time-domain transient and 3-phase simultaneous analyses, and 3) field testing and verification, which are described in Part 2. The effective PSS2A model parameters of EX2000 system in the Dangjin T/P #4 were designed according to the suggested procedure, and verified by using three analyses.

  • This study analyzes gestation stall structures with high strength concrete. The ANSYS program described in this paper is effective not only because it shows good accuracy but also it shows the goodness of parameter studies by using APDL(ANSYS Parametric Design Language). We have performed the various parameter studies by thickness change. The results is presented by using contours and tables. The analysis results showed that it was effective to increase the height thickness(tz) rather than longitudinal thickness(tx).

  • The size-effect study of various fracture parameters obtained from two parameter fracture model, effective crack model, double-K fracture model and double-G fracture model is presented in the paper. Fictitious crack model (FCM) for three-point bend test geometry for cracked concrete beam of laboratory size range 100-400 mm is developed and the different fracture parameters from size effect model, effective crack model, double-K fracture model and double-G fracture model are evaluated using the input data obtained from FCM. In addition, the fracture parameters of two parameter fracture model are obtained using the mathematical coefficients available in literature. From the study it is concluded that the fracture parameters obtained from various nonlinear fracture models including the double-K and double-G fracture models are influenced by the specimen size. These fracture parameters maintain some definite interrelationship depending upon the specimen size and relative size of initial notch length.

  • Concrete is a composite material and at meso-level, may be assumed to be composed of three phases: aggregate, mortar-matrix and aggregate-matrix interface. It is postulated herein that although non-linear material parameters are generally used to model this composite structure by finite element method, linear elastic fracture mechanics principles can be used for modelling at the meso level, if the properties of all three phases are known. For this reason, a novel meso-mechanical approach for concrete fracture which uses the composite material model with distributed-phase for elastic properties of phases and considers the size effect according to linear elastic fracture mechanics for strength properties of phases is presented in this paper. Consequently, the developed model needs two parameters such as compressive strength and maximum grain size of concrete. The model is applied to three most popular fracture mechanics approaches for concrete namely the two-parameter model, the effective crack model and the size effect model. It is concluded that the developed model well agrees with considered approaches.

  • The spectral types of stars can be classified by using Balmer discontinuity($D_B$) and wavelength(${\lambda}_B$) expressed in terms of effective temperatures appeared in Balmer discontinuity. In this research, in order to classify stars, we used the well established observational data of high dispersion spectrophotometry for the spectral types and luminosity classes of stars in the Breger(1976) catalogue. Balmer discontinuity by effective temperatures of stars was accurately measured, and the ${\lambda}_B$ was replaced to luminosity classes of MK system, because of the close relationship between the As and luminosity classes. We measured the energy gradients(${\phi}_R$) of stars which were expressed as a function of spectral types in the interval of ${\lambda}{\lambda}4,000{\sim}4600{\AA}$, and then obtained a new physical parameter(${\phi}$) from the $D_B$ and ${\phi}_B$. The new parameter, ${\phi}$ can be used instead of HD classifications of stars and can be used widely for spectrophotometrical classifications of stars.

  • This paper concentrates on the position control of a pneumatic cylinder under parameter variation. A closed-loop control is proposed to design the different controllers(P, PI, PID, PD controller) in order to choose the best con-troller based on the fast and accurate control of the system. It is shown that the control algorithm, is robust and effective in attaining the fast and accurate position control of system under time-dependent parameter variation. Experimental results showed that PD controller law is effective to obtain the fast response and to increase that sta-blity of the system The method is a useful control algorithm which always automatically adjusts the position con-trol in accordance with the error using carrier wave of triangle type regardless of changes on the operating condi-tion and physical differences between components.

  • In the case of the remediation studies, push pull test is a more time and cost effective mettled than multi-well tracer test. It also gives Just as much or more information than the traditionally used methods. But the data analysis for the hydraulic parameters, there have been some defections such as underestimation of dispersivity, requirement for effective porosity, and calculation of recovery of center of mass to estimate linear velocity. In this research, Weibull distribution function is proposed to estimate the center of mass of breakthrough curve for Push pull test. The hydraulic parameter estimation using Weibull function showed more exact values of center of mass than those of exponential regression for field test data.

  • Procedures for estimation of axial or flexural rigidities of bridge members by neural networks are shown. To treat large scale structures containing many unkwon parameters, substructuring concept is introduced. The measurement points are selected considering the sensitivity of the element stiffnesses of interest. Utilization of relative mode vectors is found to be very effective for the local parameter estimation. Then, the study focuses on the method to obtain the training set enough to represent structures. It is shown that noise injection is effective to reduce the estimation errors caused by measurement noise. Verification of the present method is carried out using a cable-stayed bridge model.
