  • For an unmanned machining system, the control and disposal of chips is one of the most serious problems at present. In order to perform chip control, feed/land length($F_L$) was introduced, and using this parameter, the cutting performance and chip breaking characteristics of groove-type and the land -angle-type chip formers were assessed. The specific cutting energy consumed and the shape of broken chips with its breaking cycle time were evaluated to find out the ranges of $F_L$ value where efficient cutting and effective chip breaking could be achieved. The C type chip was found to be the most preferable from the view point of cutting efficiency.

  • Total Variation(TV) regularization method is effective for reconstructing "blocky", discontinuous images from contaminated image with noise. But TV is represented by highly nonlinear integro-differential equation that is hard to solve. There have been much effort to obtain stable and fast methods. C. Vogel introduced "the Fixed Point Lagged Diffusivity Iteration", which solves the nonlinear equation by linearizing. In this paper, we apply multigrid(MG) method for cell centered finite difference (CCFD) to solve system arise at each step of this fixed point iteration. In numerical simulation, we test various images varying noises and regularization parameter $\alpha$ and smoothness $\beta$ which appear in TV method. Numerical tests show that the parameter ${\beta}$ does not affect the solution if it is sufficiently small. We compute optimal $\alpha$ that minimizes the error with respect to $L^2$ norm and $H^1$ norm and compare reconstructed images.

  • The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) has been a popular regression estimator with simultaneous variable selection. However, LASSO does not have the oracle property and its robust version is needed in the case of heavy-tailed errors or serious outliers. We propose a robust penalized regression estimator which provide a simultaneous variable selection and estimator. It is based on the rank regression and the non-convex penalty function, the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) function which has the oracle property. The proposed method combines the robustness of the rank regression and the oracle property of the SCAD penalty. We develop an efficient algorithm to compute the proposed estimator that includes a SCAD estimate based on the local linear approximation and the tuning parameter of the penalty function. Our estimate can be obtained by the least absolute deviation method. We used an optimal tuning parameter based on the Bayesian information criterion and the cross validation method. Numerical simulation shows that the proposed estimator is robust and effective to analyze contaminated data.

  • Pilot-based coding (PBC), which is used for lossless bit rate reduction of audio coding, has been recently proposed for MPEG Surround. We propose extended PBC for further lossless bit rate reduction of MPEG Surround. Extended PBC selects the number of pilots depending on the parameter band number and the type of spatial parameter. It then encodes the pilots and the relevant difference data. Experiments show that extended PBC is more effective than the original PBC, especially for high bit rate modes, with a negligible complexity increase on the decoder side.

  • Although the general sliding model control has the robust property, bounds on the disturbances and parameter variations should be known a prior to the designer of the control system. However, these bounds may not be easily obtained. Fuzzy logic provides an effective way to design a controller of the system with disturbances and parameter variations. Therefore, combination of the best feature of the fuzzy logic control and the sliding mode control is considered. In this paper, the adaptive fuzzy variable structure controller developed for variables of fuzzy logic. A variable length pendulum system is used to demonstrate the availability of the proposed algorithm.

  • The equivalent transformation of a brushless DC motor into an separately exited DC motor has been possible with the vector control technique. Vector control is an effective technique for controlling variable speed drives of brushless DC motors. Conventional vector controllers, however, suffer from electrical machine parameter variations because these controllers depend on the parameters. This paper presents the vector control of brushless DC motor using a neural network. In the proposed method, a neural network is employed as on-line estimator of the nonlinear dynamic equations of brushless DC motor. The neural network based vector controller has the advantage of robustness against machine parameter variations as compared with conventional vector controller The simulation results using Matlab/Simulink verify the useful of the proposed method.

  • In this paper we implemented a novel re-entrant mode microstrip directional coupler for realizing the high directivity characteristic using finite element (FE) analysis. In microstrip configuration, the high directivity can be reached by matching the even- and odd-mode effective phase velocities. Through the values of capacitance obtained from 2-dimensional finite element(FE) analysis, the phase velocities for each mode and the design parameter were extracted for the proposed coupled-line configuration. Based on the extracted design parameter with phase matching condition we designed and fabricated 30dB directional coupler at 850MHz. Experimental results show good performance with excellent isolation.

  • Cantilevered carbon-nanotube-resonator was investigated via classical molecular dynamics simulations. The resonator system is including the attached nanocluster. A nanocluster with a finite length was modeling by some atomic rings. The mass of the nanocluster was equally distributed on the carbon atoms, composed of the atomic rings. The effective density factor, which could be considered as the single parameter affecting the resonance frequency shift, was significantly influenced by the mass, the position, and the linear density of the attached nanocluster. The linear density of the attached nanocluster was an important parameter to analyze the vibrational behavior of the CNT-resonator, including the attached nanocluster.

  • A theoretical study of mutual coupling effects between two H-plane coupled microstrip patch antennas is presented. The radiation resistance and slot capacitance of a single micro-strip patch are calculated. To investigate the mutual coupling effects, the even and odd mode characteristic impedance and effective dielectric constants are obtained using the coupled microstrip line model. The S-parameter matrix elements 511,512 are used to study the mutual coupling e(facts in S-band frequency ranges for various patch spacings. Theoretical results and measurements are in good agreement.

  • Register transfer level power macromodeling is well known as a promising technique for accurate and efficient power estimation. This paper proposes effective approaches based on the tablebased method for the RTL power macro-modeling. The new parameter SD, which characterizes the distribution of switching activities for each gate in the circuit, is one of the contributions. The new parameter SD has strong correlation with power consumption. We also propose an accurate table reference method considering the circuit characteristics. The table reference method is applicable for every table-based method and outputs more accurate power value. The experimental results show that the combination of the proposed methods reduces max error 30.36% in the best case, comparing conventional methods. The RMS error is also improved 1.70% in the best case.
