  • Semi-active control devices have received significant attention in recent Years because they offer the adaptability of active-control devices without requiring the associated large power sources. Magnetorheological(MR) dampers are semiactive control devices that use MR fluids to produce controllable dampers. This paper applies sliding mode control method using target variation rate of Lyapunov function for the control of structures by use of MR dampers. The three-story building model under earthquake excitation is analyzed by installing a MR damper in the first-story. The performance of semi-active controllers designed by clipped-optimal algorithm and modified sliding mode control algorithm is compared to the performance of passive-type MR dampers. The results indicate that semi-active controllers achieve a greater reduction of responses than passive-type system and especially the controller by modified sliding mode control method shows a good applicability in the view of response control and control force.

  • Urbanization and development of industry makes people concerned about quality of circumstances. Problems of vibration are on the rise. Vibration makes inhabitants feel unpleasant and involves structural damage. The purpose of this study is to assess damage of reinforced concrete structures due to ground motions as the parameters of frequency, duration time and aspect ratio of structures are changed. Ground motions were modeled as sine waves. To compare sine waves with real ground motions, two cases are selected; one is blast loading case and the other is earthquake loading. It was intended to provide means to assess R/C structure damage due to ground motions.

  • The current load combination criteria for design of nuclear power plant structures(NPP) are not based on the probability-based design concept but rely on the conventional design concept. In this paper, a load combination criteria for design of NPP containment structures are proposed based on a FEM-based random vibration analysis. More accurate reliability analyses under various dynamic loads such as earthquake loads were made possible by incorporating the FEM and random vibration theory, which is different from the conventional reliability analysis method, In this paper, the toad factors for the design of NPP structures in Korea are proposed by considering appropriate load combination criteria for design.

  • As the structures become larger, higher and more complicated, the demand for safety level has increased. In recent years, TLD(Tuned Liquid Damper) proved to be a successful control tool for reducing structural vibrations. For this reason, the influence of some key parameters of the U-type TLD on the dynamic response is studied. And simple and effectively developed learning control logic is used to control vibration of U type Tuned Liquid Damper system. The purpose of this paper is design optimal control system to deal with unknown errors from non linearity and variation that cost modeling difficulty in complex structure and is followed with the desired behavior. Finally this hybrid control method applied to U type Tuned Liquid Damper structure gives the benefit from better performance of precision and stability of the structure by reducing vibration effect. This research leads to safety design in various structure to robust unspecified foreign disturbances such as windy-load and earthquake.

  • This study is for the seismic analysis and the structural integrity evaluation of the box beam for supporting nuclear fuel-transfer-basket of the HANARO reactor pool. For performing the seismic analysis and evaluating the structural integrity in air or submerged condition, the finite element model of the fuel-transfer-basket and its supporting box beam(the coupled model) was developed. The hydrodynamic effect is also considered by using added mass concept. The seismic response spectrum analyses of the coupled model under the design floor response spectrum loads of Safe Shutdown Earthquake(SSE) were performed. Through the numerical experiments, the analysis results show that the stress values of the coupled model lot the structural integrity are within the ASME Code limits.

  • In this paper we present an overview of damage diagnosis algorithms that have been developed over the past two decades using vibration signals obtained from structures. Then, the paper focuses primarily on algorithms that can be used following an extreme event such as a large earthquake to identify structural damage for responding in a timely manner. The algorithms presented in the paper use measurements obtained from accelerometers and gyroscope to identify the occurrence of damage and classify the damage. Example algorithms are presented include those based on autoregressive moving average (ARMA), wavelet energies from wavelet transform and rotation models. The algorithms are illustrated through application of data from test structures such as the ASCE Benchmark structure and laboratory tests of scaled bridge columns and steel frames. The paper concludes by identifying needs for research and development in order for such algorithms to become viable in practice.

  • Recently, as the catastrophic disasters due to earthquake happen frequently all over the world, it draws lots of attention to seismic capacity evaluation and/or structural integrity assessment of deteriorated civil infra-structures. However, there have been few studies on the existing dam flood gates, expecially in Korea. In this study, a proper vibration testing method applicable to a dam flood gate has been suggested, since the dynamic characteristics of a darn flood gate can be fundamental data for seismic capacity evaluation or structural integrity assessment. The frequency domain decomposition technique has been incorporated for modal parameter identification. Two kinds of vibration tests using an impact hammer and ambient vibration sources were carried out on two types of dam floodgates with different shapes. Through the field tests, the effectiveness of the ambient vibration tests were verified.

  • A sliding mode fuzzy control (SMFC) with disturbance estimator is applied to design a controller for the third generation benchmark problem on an wind-excited building. A distinctive feature in vibration control of large civil infrastructure is the existence of large disturbances, such as wind, earthquake, and sea wave forces. Those disturbances govern the behavior of the structure, however, they cannot be precisely measured, especially for the case of wind-induced vibration control. Since the structural accelerations are measured only at a limited number of locations without the measurement of the wind forces, the structure of the conventional control may have the feed-back loop only. General structure of the SMFC is composed of a compensation part and a convergent part. The compensation part prevents the system diverge, and the convergent part makes the system converge to the sliding surface. The compensation part uses not only the structural response measurement but also the disturbance measurement, so the SMFC has a feed-back loop and a feed-forward loop. To realize the virtual feed-forward loop for the wind-induced vibration control, disturbance estimation filter is introduced. the structure of the filter is constructed based on an auto regressive model for the stochastic wind force. This filter estimates the wind force at each time instance based on the measured structural responses and the stochastic information of the wind force. For the verification of the proposed algorithm, a numerical simulation is carried out on the benchmark problem of a wind-excited building. The results indicate that the present control algorithm is very efficient for reducing the wind-induced vibration and that the performance indices improve as the filter for wind force estimation is employed.

  • This study aimed to investigate the random vibration characteristic of train-slab track-bridge interaction system subjected to both track irregularities and earthquakes by use of pseudo-excitation method (PEM). Each vehicle subsystem was modeled by multibody dynamics. A three-dimensional rail-slab- girder-pier finite element model was created to simulate slab track and bridge subsystem. The equations of motion for the entire system were established based on the constraint condition of no jump between wheel and rail. The random load vectors of equations of motion were formulated by transforming track irregularities and seismic accelerations into a series of deterministic pseudo-excitations according to their respective power spectral density (PSD) functions by means of PEM. The time-dependent PSDs of random vibration responses of the system were obtained by step-by-step integration method, and the corresponding extreme values were estimated based on the first-passage failure criterion. As a case study, an ICE3 high-speed train passing a fifteen-span simply supported girder bridge simultaneously excited by track irregularities and earthquakes is presented. The evaluated extreme values and the PSD characteristic of the random vibration responses of bridge and train are analyzed, and the influences of train speed and track irregularities (without earthquakes) on the random vibration characteristic of bridge and train are discussed.
