Recent seismicity of the central region of South Korea is investigated by using the micro-earthquake data recorded at the seismic network of KNUE(Korea National University of Education) since December, 1997. About two earthquakes are observed each month, which indicates relatively low seismic activities of the region, without showing any temporal characteristics of seismicity. The b-value of the region obtained from the data we used is found to be about 1.15. The epicenters of the micro-earthquakes are mostly located in the Okchon Zone, especially around Munkyong area, Poeun-Sokri Mt.-Youngdong area, and Kunsan-Nonsan area.
The land cover over Korean peninsula was classified using a multi-temporal NOAA/AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) data. Four types of phenological data derived from the 10-day composited NDVI (Normalized Differences Vegetation Index), maximum and annual mean land surface temperature, and topographical data were used not only reducing the data volume but also increasing the accuracy of classification. Self organizing feature map (SOFM), a kind of neural network technique, was used for the clustering of satellite data. We used a decision tree for the classification of the clusters. When we compared the classification results with the time series of NDVI and some other available ground truth data, the urban, agricultural area, deciduous tree and evergreen tree were clearly classified.
The purpose of this study was to verify the trends of Korean students' achievement of earth science, especially the gender differences, in recent two international comparative studies, TIMSS-R (The Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat) and PISA 2000 (Programme for International Student Assessment). To achieve this purpose, the 33 earth science items in TIMSS-R and 13 earth and environmental science items in PISA 2000 were analyzed. As a result of the comparison between Korean- and international percent correct, Korean students showed especially higher achievement in close-ended items or items required 'understanding of simple information.' Korean students, in particular Korean male students, also showed higher achievement in items of data interpretation. On the other hand, Korean students, in particular Korean female students, showed relatively lower achievement in astronomy items. The serious gender differences occurred in all aspects of items, regardless of item content, item format, and performance expectations.

The purpose of this study was to identify heuristically how abduction was used in a context of solving an earth-environmental problem. Thirty two groups of participants with different institutional backgrounds, i,e., inservice earth science teachers, preservice science teachers, and high school students, solved an open-ended earth-environmental problem and produced group texts in which their ways of solving the problem were written, The inferential processes in the texts were rearranged according to the syllogistic form of abduction and then analyzed iteratively so as to find thinking strategies used in the abductive reasoning. The result showed that abduction was employed in the process of solving the earth-environmental problem and that several thinking strategies were used for inferring rules from which abductive conclusions were drawn. The strategies found included data reconstruction, chained abduction, adapting novel information, model construction and manipulation, causal combination, elimination, case-based analogy, and existential strategy. It was suggested that abductive problems could be used to enhance students' thinking abilities and their understanding of the nature of earth science and earth-environmental problems.
Fundamental data for 400 classical cepheids have been compiled. The PC-relation is derived and compared with similar relations for the Magellanic Clouds; it is fund that the differences are not great.
The purposes of this study were to develop an Earth systems-based earth science module and to investigate the effects of field application. The module was applied to two classrooms of a total of 76 second-year high schoolers, in order to investigate the effectiveness of the developed module. Data was collected from observations in earth science classrooms, interviews, and questionnaires. The findings were as follows. First, the Earth systems-based earth science module was designed to be associated with the aims of the national Earth Science Curriculum and to improve students' Earth science literacy. The module was composed of two sections for a total of seven instructional hours for high schoolers. The former sections included the understanding of the Earth system through the understanding of each individual component of the system, its characteristics, properties and structure. The latter section of the module, consisting of 4 instructional hours, dealt with earth environmental problems, the understanding of subsystems changing through natural processes and cycles, and human interactions and their effects upon Earth systems. Second, the module was helpful in learning about the importance of understanding the interactions between water, rock, air, and life when it comes to understanding the Earth system, its components, characteristics, and properties. The Earth systems-based earth science module is a valuable and helpful instructional material which can enhance students' understanding of Earth systems and earth science literacy.
Detection of spectral bio-signatures from extra terrestrial planets has received an increasing attention from the astronomy and space science communities in recent years. In an attempt to better-understand disk averaged spectra of the only know terrestrial planet i.e. Earth, we are constructing a scale-able 3D earth model with surface reflectance and scattering properties. The USGS coastal line data were used to form coastal line segments and they were then stitched to generate continuous coastal lines to represent major continents and large islands. As the first stage of model verification, wavelength dependent ocean and land reflectance data and scattering characteristics were defined over the land and sea surfaces respectively. We then performed ray tracing based imaging and radiometric transfer simulations using a hypothetical optical payload receiving the reflected and scattered sun lights from the earth. The model concept, computational details, the simulation results are discussed as well as the future development plan.
Insolation is an major indicator variable that can serve as an energy source in earth system. It is important to monitor insolation content using remote sensing to evaluate the potential of solar energy. In this study, we performed sensitivity analysis of observed frequency on daily composite insolation over the Korean peninsula. We estimated INS through the channel data of Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) and Cloud Mask which have temporal resolution of 1 and 3 hours. We performed Hemispherical Integration by spatial resolution for meaning whole sky. And we performed daily composite insolation. And then we compared the accuracy of estimated COMS insolation data with pyranometer data from 37 points. As a result, there was no great sensitivity in the daily composite INS by observed frequency of satellite that accuracy of the calculated insolation at 1 hour interval was $28.6401W/m^2$ and 3 hours interval was $30.4960W/m^2$. However, there was a great difference in the space distribution of two other INS data by observed frequency of clouds. So, we performed sensitivity analysis with observed frequency of clouds and distinction between the two other INS data. Consequently, there was showed sensitivity up to $19.4392W/m^2$.
Aeromagnetic and gravity data were analyzed to delineate the subsurface structure of the Yeongdong basin and its related fault movement in the Okcheon fold belt. The aeromagnetic data of the total intensity (KIGAM, 1983) were reduced to the pole and three dimensional inverse modeling, which considers topography of the survey area in the modeling process, were carried out. The apparent susceptibility map obtained by three dimensional magnetic inversion, as well as the observed aeromagnetic anomaly itself, show clearly the gross structural trend of the Yeongdong basin in the direction on between $N30^{\circ}E$ and $N45^{\circ}E$. Gravity survey was carried out along the profile, of which the length is about 18.2 km across the basin. Maximum relative Bouguer anomaly is about 7 mgals. Both forward and inverse modeling were also carried out for gravity analysis. The magnetic and gravity results show that the Yeongdong basin is developed by the force which had created the NE-SW trending the magnetic anomalies. The susceptibility contrast around Yeongdong fault is apparent, and the southeastern boundary of the basin is clearly defined. The basement depth of the basin appears to be about 1.1 km beneath the sea level, and the width of the basin is estimated to be 7 km based on the simultaneous analysis of gravity and magnetic profiles. There exists an unconformity between the sedimentary rocks and the gneiss at the southeastern boundary, which is the Yeongdong fault, and granodiorite is intruded at the northwestern boundary of the basin. Our results of gravity and magnetic data analysis support that the Yeongdong basin is a pull-apart basin formed by the left-stepping sinistral strike-slip fault, which formed the Okcheon fold belt.
This study propose a new method to detect Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide occurring in South Sea of Korea using Water-leaving Radiance data and Absorption Coefficients data of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI). C. polykrikoides were analyzed and the irradiance and light emission characteristics of the wavelength range from 412 nm to 555 nm were confirmed. The detection technique proposed in this study detects the red tide occurring in the optically complex South Sea. Based on these results, it can be used for future red tide prevention.
