Early Strength and Properties of EVA Powder Modified High Strength Concrete (EVA Powder 개질 고강도 콘크리트의 초기강도 및 수밀특성)

  • EVA Powder modified high strength concretes were prepared by varying polymer/binder mass ratio with a constant water/binder mass ratio of 0.3. The effect of EVA powder on the slump, hydration heat, compressive and flexural strength, toughness and water absorption ratio was studied. In hydration heat test, temperature of hydration reaction displayed almost fixed level regardless of containing rate of EVA powder, but peak time of hydration reaction displayed late inclination as containing rate of powder increases. With the same water/binder mass ratio, the compressive strength and water absorption of EVA powder modified concretes decreased slightly when EVA powder was added and the flexural strength of EVA powder modified concretes rised slightly when EVA powder was added. Also, the toughness of the modified concretes can be improved markedly. The interpenetrating structure between the polymeric phase and cement hydrates formed at a $2{\sim}6%$(containing rate of EVA powder). The properties of the polymer modified concretes were influenced by the polymer film, cement hydrates and the combined structure between the organic and inorganic phases.

A Highly Efficient and Fast Algorithm for Implementing a Real-Time Software GNSS Receiver

  • In this paper, for implementing a real-time software GNSS receiver we propose the highly efficient and fast algorithms such as partial down-conversion, phase rotator, composite I&Q accumulation, Virtual DCO technique, and parallel acquisition using FFT. When the proposed algorithms are used, more 30 tracking channels with 3 tracking arm(early-prompt-late) is operated real-time on Intel 2.8GHz personal computer. Also, the partial down-conversion reduces the FFT size, for parallel acquisition, to 1/8 of conventional FFT-size and the program size includes map is not exceed 1Mbyte. Finally, the proposed real-time software GNSS receiver using the proposed algorithms provides the navigation solution with below 10 meter rms error.

  • The changes of susceptibility of Bacillus subtilis SNU816 to bacteriophage SP816 were investigated. When B. sutilis SNU816 cells were infected by the phage during vegetative growth, rapid lysis was observed. But when they were infected after late logarismic phase, they were resistant to phage infection. Since asporogenic culture of this strain was invariably lysed regardless of time of infection, the arrest of phage multiplication seemed to be caused by sporulation. In reality, the arrest of phage multiplication occurred at early stage of sporulation. Electron microscopy revealed that the arrest of phage multiplication occurred just prior to or during septum formation (stage II sporulation).

  • Open pelvic fractures are rare, but pose challenges for trauma surgeons due to their high morbidity and mortality. Generally, early death results from uncontrolled exsanguination and late death is related to pelvic sepsis. Therefore, management of these injuries should prioritize hemostasis and contamination control starting in the initial phase of treatment. We report two cases of unstable open pelvic fractures with perineal wounds that were managed successfully.

  • The MNDO was found to be the most reliable semi-empirical SCF-MO method for the studies of $S_N2$ reactions involving anion and neutral molecule. The results of our MNDO calculations on the $S_N2$ reactions of $CH_3X$ + $Y^-$$CH_3Y$ + X- where X = H, F, Cl, CN, $CH_3$, and Y = F, $CH_3$ showed that the order of the leaving group ability is the reverse of the order of proton affinities. It was also found that there is no symbiosis involved in the SN2 transition state and the departure of the leaving group is relatively late in contrast to the early bond formation of the nucleophile. The Marcus equation was found to apply to the MNDO barriers and energy changes.

  • Effect of Compound-A, a phenylpropanoid isolated from Arctium lappa fruit, on the early- (EAR) and late-phase asthmatic responses (LAR) of guinea pigs were studied in vivo. Guinea pigs were sensitized by injection of 100 mg of ovalbumin (OA). Twenty-one days after sensitization, animals were challenged with exposure to aerosolized 1 % OA for five minutes in double-chambered plethysmograph box with jet nubulizer. Immediately and twenty-four hours after challenge, EAR and LAR ashmatic responses were determined the tidal volume (TV), respiration rate (RR) and specific airway resistance (sRaw), and then animals anethetized and taken the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) by lavage the lung with HEPES buffer through cannulation into trachea. Bone Regeneration in the Extraction Socket Filled with Atelocollagen: Histological and Radiographic Study in Beagle Dogs

  • Purpose: Alveolar bone develops with tooth eruption and is absorbed following tooth extraction. Various ridge preservation techniques have sought to prevent ridge atrophy, with no superior technique evident. Collagen has a long history as a biocompatible material. Its usefulness and safety have been amply verified. The related compound, atelocollagen, is also safe and displays reduced antigenicity since telopeptides are not present. Materials and Methods: The current study evaluated whether the $Rapiderm^{(R)}$ atelocollagen plug (Dalim Tissen, Seoul, Korea) improves tissue healing of extraction sockets and assessed the sequential pattern of bone regeneration using histology and microcomputed tomography in six beagle dogs. To assess the change of extraction socket, hard tissues were examined 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after tooth extraction. Result: The experimental groups showed better bone fill with slow remodeling process compared to the control groups although there was no statistical difference between groups. Conclusion: The atelocollagen seems to have a tendency to slow bone remodeling in the early phase of healing period and maintain remodeling capacity until late phase of remodeling. Also, use of atelocollagen increased the bone-to-tissue ratio compared to healing of untreated extraction socket.

Concentration Distribution of Liquid/vapor Phases under In-Cylinder Flow Field with Different Injection Timings (엔진 유동장에서 분사시기에 따른 혼합기의 기ㆍ액상 농도 분포에 관한 연구)

  • The present study experimentally investigates the concentration distribution of liquid and vapor phase with different injection timings in the in-cylinder flow field of a optically accessible engine. The conventional MPI, DOHC engine was modified into DI gasoline engine. The images of liquid and vapor phases in the motoring engine were captured by using exciplex fluorescence method. Dopants used in this study were 2% fluorobenzene and 9% DEMA(diethyl-methyl-amino) in 89% solution of hexane by volume respectively. Two dimensional spray fluorescence images of liquid and vapor phases were acquired to analyze spray behaviors and fuel distribution in the in-cylinder flow field. Measurements were carried out fur four different injection timings, namely BTDC 270$^{\circ}$, 180$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$, and 50$^{\circ}$. Experimental results indicate that behaviors and distribution of vapor phase were largely affected by in-cylinder tumble flow, and mixture formation process was also greatly affected by in-cylinder flow at early injection mode and by ambient pressure at late injection mode.

Plasmid-associated Bacteriocin Production by Leuconostoc sp. LAB145-3A Isolated from Kimchi

  • Leuconostoc sp. LAB145-3A isolated from kimchi produced a bacteriocin which was active against food pathogens, such as Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, and E. faecium. Bacteriocin production occurred during the early exponential phase of growth and was stable upto the late stationary phase of growth. Optimum conditions for bacteriocin production were $37^{\circ}C$ with an initial pH of 7.0. The bacteriocin of LAB145-3A was sensitive to proteases, but stable for solvents, pH change and heat treatment. It was stable even at autoclaving temperature for 15 min. The bacteriocin exhibited a bactericidal mode of action against Lactobacillus curvatus LAB170-12. The bacteriocin produced by Leuconostoc sp. LAB145-3A was purified by CM-cellulose cation exchange column chromatography and Sephadex G-50 gel filtration. The purification resulted in an approximate 10,000-fold increase in the specific activity. Approximately 4% of the initial activity was recovered. Purified bacteriocin exhibited a single band on the SDS-PAGE with an apparent molecular weight of 4,400 daltons. This bacteriocin was named leucocin K. Leuconostoc sp. LAB145-3A had two residential plasmids with molecular sizes of 23 kb and 48 kb. A comparison of plasmid profiles between LAB145-3A and its mutants revealed that the 23 kb plasmid (pCA23) was responsible for bacteriocin production and immunity to the bacteriocin in Leuconostoc sp. LAB145-3A.

CLINICAL STUDY ON SUCCESS RATE OF TG OSSEOTITE IMPLANT (TG Osseotite 임플란트의 성공률에 대한 임상적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to review the prognosis of the TG Osseotite implant(3i Co, USA) placed in partial edentulous area of oral cavity and to suspect the possible causes leading to failure. 124 TG Osseotite implants that had been inserted between 2000 - 2002 were followed up for 2 years(avg : 9.5 months) in function. Medical records, and radiographs were evaluated and analyzed by the over all success rate, gender and age factor, general disease, implant fixture length and diameter, implant site, bone density, and various surgical methods. Chi square test was used statistically. Of the 124 TG Osseotite implants, 9 implants(7.3%) were removed in early phase and 3 implants(2.4%) were in late phase. The cumulative survival rate was 90.2%. The failure of the TG Osseotite implant was closely related with the use of bone graft techniques such as sinus elevation or immediate implantation and not with the age, sex, general disease, implant site, bone density of implanted site. The failure of the TG Osseotite implant was well developed when it was the wide type of implant and it was inserted for single tooth replacement. The developement of peri-implantitis was the most important factor in the failure of the TG Osseotite implant.
