Structural health monitoring-based dynamic behavior evaluation of a long-span high-speed railway bridge

  • The dynamic performance of railway bridges under high-speed trains draws the attention of bridge engineers. The vibration issue for long-span bridges under high-speed trains is still not well understood due to lack of validations through structural health monitoring (SHM) data. This paper investigates the correlation between bridge acceleration and train speed based on structural dynamics theory and SHM system from three foci. Firstly, the calculated formula of acceleration response under a series of moving load is deduced for the situation that train length is near the length of the bridge span, the correlation between train speed and acceleration amplitude is analyzed. Secondly, the correlation scatterplots of the speed-acceleration is presented and discussed based on the transverse and vertical acceleration response data of Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge SHM system. Thirdly, the warning indexes of the bridge performance for correlation scatterplots of speed-acceleration are established. The main conclusions are: (1) The resonance between trains and the bridge is unlikely to happen for long-span bridge, but a multimodal correlation curve between train speed and acceleration amplitude exists after the resonance speed; (2) Based on SHM data, multimodal correlation scatterplots of speed-acceleration exist and they have similar trends with the calculated formula; (3) An envelope line of polylines can be used as early warning indicators of the changes of bridge performance due to the changes of slope of envelope line and peak speed of amplitude. This work also gives several suggestions which lay a foundation for the better design, maintenance and long-term monitoring of a long-span high-speed bridge.

  • The exponential increase of malicious and criminal activities in cyber space is posing serious threat which could destabilize the foundation of modern information society. In particular, unexpected network paralysis or break-down created by the spread of malicious traffic could cause confusion and disorder in a nationwide scale, and unless effective countermeasures against such unexpected attacks are formulated in time, this could develop into a catastrophic condition. In order to solve a same problem, this paper researched early detection techniques for only early warning of cyber threats with separate way the detection due to and existing security equipment from the large network. It researched the cyber example alert system which applies the module of based honeynet from the actual large network and this technique against the malignant traffic how many probably it will be able to dispose effectively from large network.

Shell Valve Movement of Pacific Oysters, Crassostrea gigas, in Response to Low Salinity Water (저염수에서 이매패류 참굴(Crassostrea gigas)의 패각운동)

  • We examined the possibility of developing an early monitoring system using the shell valve movement activity of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) for early detection of low salinity water in coastal areas. At salinity levels of 30 psu and 20 psu, SVMs were detected $7.32{\pm}3.21times/hr$ and $7.11{\pm}3.90times/hr$, respectively, The patterns and times of SVMs were not significantly different between the two experiment phases. However, at 10 psu and 5 psu, shell valves were observed to be permanently closed in all experiments. Under combined condition (Group 1: temperature $15^{\circ}C$ ${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed from 20 psu to 30 psu over a 2 - 3 hr period, and then remained closed. In Group 2 (temperature $30^{\circ}C$ ${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed, which indicated that the physiological condition of the oysters reached a critical point. Thus, it may be possible to utilize SVMs as an early warning signal for low salinity water.

  • Ad hoc network does not need any preexisting network infrastructure, and it has been developed as temporal networks in the various fields. Infostation is an efficient system to transfer informations which are not sensitive to delay. In this paper, we propose a disaster emergency management system using sensors attached to animals, that is combined with infostation system. We also analyze the performance of the proposed system by simulation. From the performance analysis results, we expect that the proposed system will be very useful to early detect big forest fires which occur frequently in Korea mountain areas.

  • In this study, we propose rainfall frequency criteria for the development of early-warning system based on the evaluation of the highway debris flow that includes the contents of the rainfall recurrence cycle. The rainfall criterion was recommended based on the results of previous researches and the recommended rainfall criterion was 1 hour, 6 hours, and 3 days. At this time, the study subjects were located in Gangwon area and the probability rainfall of 8 stations in Gangwon area was collected. Also, the probabilistic distribution of the 1 hour, 6 hour, and 3 day rainfall criteria to be used for the early warning for the highway debris flow in Kangwon area was estimated through the probability analysis. In addition, we analyzed the correlation between 3 types of rainfall criteria selected from the rainfall data and the actual destructive damages of debris flow at 12 points in 7 lines of Gangwon highways. At this time, the rainfall criterion on the probability distribution was divided into an average value and a lower limit value. As a result of the review, it was found that the case of using the lower limit value of the rainfall according to the recurrence intervalwell simulates the situation of actual debris flow hazards.

  • In the previous study, the rainfall data of 1 hour, 6 hours and 3 days were used as the rainfall criterion according to the grade to trigger the debris flow in the highway area, using the rainfall data of Gangwon area and the rainfall time-series data at the spot where the debris flow occurred. In this study, we propose an early warning criterion of the highway debris flow triggering through appropriate combination of three rainfall criteria selected through previous studies and adjustments of rainfall criterion in the highway debris flow triggering. In addition, simulations were conducted using the time-series rainfall data of 2010~2012, which had a large amount of precipitation for the five sites where debris flows occurred in 2013. As a result of the study, the criteria for the early warning of highway unsteadiness on the highway were prepared. In case of the grade-based adjustment, it is preferable to apply the unified rating to the grade B. Also, if the fatigue of the monitoring is not a problem, adjusting it to A or S may be a way to positively cope with the occurrence of highway debris flow.

A Precise Trajectory Prediction Method for Target Designation Based on Cueing Data in Lower Tier Missile Defense Systems (큐잉 데이터 기반 하층방어 요격체계의 초고속 표적 탐지 방향 지정을 위한 정밀 궤적예측 기법)

  • A recent air defense missile system is required to have a capability to intercept short-range super-high speed targets such as tactical ballistic missile(TBMs) by performing engagement control efficiently. Since flight time and distance of TBM are very short, the missile defense system should be ready to engage a TBM as soon as it takes an indication of the TBM launch. As a result, it has to predict TBM trajectory accurately with cueing information received from an early warning system, and designate search direction and volume for own radar to detect/track TBM as fast as it can, and also generate necessary engagement information. In addition, it is needed to engage TBM accurately via transmitting tracked TBM position and velocity data to the corresponding intercept missiles. In this paper, we proposed a method to estimate TBM trajectory based on the Kepler's law for the missile system to detect and track TBM using the cueing information received before the TBM arrives the apogee of the ballistic trajectory, and analyzed the bias of prediction error in terms of the transmission period of cueing data between the missile system and the early warning system.

  • A road recognition system or Lane departure warning system is an early stage technology that has been commercialized as early as 10 years but can be optional and used as an expensive premium vehicle, with a very small number of users. Since the system installed on a vehicle should not be error prone and operate reliably, the introduction of robust feature extraction and tracking techniques requires the development of algorithms that can provide reliable information. In this paper, we investigate and analyze various real-time road detection algorithms based on color information. Through these analyses, we would like to suggest the algorithms that are actually applicable.

  • In order to maintain clean environment in an interior space and an enclosed cattle pen, we have to measure and control environmental factors which are temperature, humidity and CO2, CH4 and so on. Although the measured values are within the normal range, those are increased or decreased sharply by the feces or environmental impacts. In order to take early an appropriate action, we propose an early warning method(EWarM) in this paper, which can recognize the rapidly changing time for the increasing or decreasing rate of the measured values. In addition, we developed fuzzy control system based on an EWarM. We verified that this system based on an EWarM is used for eliminating that impacts through performance evaluation in a variety of environmental situations.

Comparison of Frequency and Stay Time between Normal and Abnormal Elimination Behavior of Cats Using a Litter Box with Automatic Sensor

  • Changes in elimination behavior, including urination and defecation, are common clinical signs of numerous disorders in cats. Therefore, this study attempted to automatically measure the elimination behavior of cats using the litter box and develop an early warning system for the guardian in case of abnormalities. To construct an early warning system for abnormal changes through cat elimination behavior, it consisted of a litter box, an automatic sensor for data collection and data wifi transmission, a server for data analysis, and a mobile phone app for result transmission and early warning. To establish the reference interval (RI), the elimination behavior was monitored for more than 2 weeks using a motion sensor within a litter box in 37 healthy cats and 19 diseased cats. The data were expressed as daily total visits, daily total stay duration, average stay duration per elimination, weekly total visits, and weekly total stay duration. Healthy cats showed median daily total visits of 3 times/day (RI 1.0-7.0) and daily total stay duration of 192 s/day (RI 8.0-452.0). For weekly data, the median total visits were 20 times/week (RI 3.0-35.25) and the median total stay duration was 1,147 s/week (RI 80.0-2,249.5). The average stay duration per elimination was 59 s/elimination (RI 4.67-132.0). Diseased cats showed more frequent elimination behavior than healthy cats (p < 0.001). Otherwise, for each elimination, diseased cats had shorter stay durations than healthy cats (p < 0.001). This study established the RIs of elimination behavior parameters (frequency and duration) in healthy cats. The present study might help guardians and veterinarians detect changes in elimination behaviors in diseased cats at an early stage.
