This study was conducted to develop the Home Literacy Environment Rating Scale(HLERS) and to analyze its item discrimination, reliability, and validity. The participants of this study were 438 parents whose children were three to five years old. The item discrimination, determined by comparing the highest and lowest group using Chi-square($x^2$) and Cramer's V, was found to be satisfactory. The Cronbach's $\alpha$ for internal consistency reliability was .78. Factor analysis revealed that the structure of the HLERS consisted of three factors: 'reading books,' 'reading behavior and modeling of parents' and 'literacy learning.' The concurrent validity was also identified by correlation between the HLERS and two sub-tests of EC-HOME. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that the Home Literacy Environment Rating Scale is reliable and valid to examine the home literacy environment for Korean families.
Purpose: This quasi-experimental study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of an early nursing intervention program to support mothers of children aged 0-3 yr living in poverty. Methods: In this study, mothers who received financial support from the government were recruited from one city and assigned to an intervention group (24) and comparison group (18). They completed a baseline questionnaire about depression, child rearing burden, agreement on physical punishment, and child temperament. Also, Denver II screening of the children was performed by the researcher. Mothers in the intervention group received a home visit intervention every two weeks for three months. At 3-months post-baseline, questionnaire and Denver II screening were reused to compare these two groups. Results: Mother's depression, child rearing burden, agreement on physical punishment, and child temperament were not significantly different between the two groups. However, the percentage of depression declined only in the intervention group. Mothers in the intervention group showed higher Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) scores than mothers in the comparison group. Conclusion: The findings of the study show that this nursing intervention is an effective parenting program. The early nursing program for mothers with infant and toddlers in poverty is effective in promoting HOME, the child rearing home environment.
The current study examined the effects of early social support of first-time mothers on the home environment for their preschool-aged children via the mediation of mothers' depression. The study sample included 755 first-time mothers participating in the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC). Using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM), the longitudinal structure from mothers' social support when the child is one year old to the quality of the home environment when the child is 4 years old was examined. The results revealed that mothers' social support at age 1 predicted social support at age 3, which in turn predicted higher quality of the home environment for their children at age 4. The mediation of depression was also significant. Mothers' social support predicted lower levels of depression at both phases and mothers' depression was significantly associated with the quality of the home environment.
This study investigated the effect of home environment quality and fathers' parenting participation on school readiness of preschool children. The subjects were 101 5-years old children, mothers and teachers at child care centers located in the Gyeonggi area. Home environment quality was measured using a 'Korean Home Environment' questionnaire. Parenting participation by fathers was measured by 'Scale for Productive Roles of Fathers of Children in Their Early Childhood.' Lastly, the children's school readiness measured the 'School Readiness Inventory.' Collected data were analyzed using t-test, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression. The results of the study showed that the school readiness of preschool children differed by gender. The score of girls' school readiness was higher than boys' school readiness. Such difference was apparent in the school readiness areas of general knowledge, mathematical knowledge, and adjustment. There was a positive correlation between age and the school readiness of preschool children. An increase in children's age also increased school readiness in the areas of linguistic knowledge, mathematical knowledge, and adjustment. Home environment quality and fathers' parenting participation directly influenced the school readiness of preschool children. The pattern of the results suggests that a desirable home environment and fathers' contribution in the family for children are critical components to prepare preschool children for elementary school.
Objective: The main purpose of this study was examine the relationships among goodness of fit between mother and child, child's self-esteem and quality of home environment. Also, the moderating effects of quality of home environment among preschoolers were investigated in the relation of interest in this study. Methods: The study subjects were 195 children who attended preschools, located in Seoul. The preschoolers' self-esteem was tested by the trained researcher, and both of levels of goodness of fit between the mother-child and quality of home environment were rated by the mothers of this study. Results: The main results of this study found that levels of preschoolers' self-esteem were positively related to goodness of fit between the mother-child, and quality of home environment. Furthermore, the effects of goodness of fit between mother-child on preschoolers' cognitive, physical, and emotional self-esteem were moderated by the quality of home environment. Conclusion/Implications: Along with those findings, implications for research and practice were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of We Start home visiting intervention program on the positive changes of infants and their low-income families. The subjects were 171 18~36-month olds and their mothers living in We Start and non We Start areas. The instruments used were Developmental Profile, Cleminshaw-Guidubaldi Parent Satisfaction Scale(CGPSS) and Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment(HOME). The results were as follows: First, the result of Developmental Profile showed positive changes in all domains(physical development, self-help skills, social development, cognitive development, and communication ability). Second, the result of CGPSS showed positive effects on parent-child relationships. Third, the result of HOME showed positive effects on mothers' emotional and language responses. In conclusion, We Start home visiting program for infants from low-income families is an effective early intervention program to end intergenerational transition of poverty in Korea.
This study examined the emergent literacy development of children and the effects of the home literacy environment on it. 861 pairs each-consisting of a mother and a child aged from three to six years old were asked to complete the early literacy parent questionnaire (Boudreau, 2005) and the home literacy environment questionnaire (Park & Kim, 2008). The results showed that : (1) girls achieved higher scores than boys in emergent literacy and its subcategories. (2) there were age differences in all of the subcategories of emergent literacy except the categories of 'orientation toward literacy' and 'phonological awareness'. (3) The study revealed that 'reading books' in the home literacy environment was the most contributive variable in predicting emergent literacy after controlling the age and gender followed by 'literacy learning'
In order to define their relative influence, this study analyzed causal relationships between academic achievement of elementary school students and such related variables as self-esteem and the psychological and economic environment of the home, including clarification of other significant variables affecting academic achievement. Participants were a sample of 485 5th grade students from 8 elementary schools in Busan. Correlation, analysis of covariance structure modeling, and model-fitness tests were applied to the data. Results indicated that the psychological environment of the home has the most significant influence on the academic achievement of children, and the economic environment of the home and self-esteem have relatively low or indirect influence.
This study used path analysis to investigate the effect of home environment on children's linguistic ability. Participants were 230 4- to 5-year-old kindergarten and child care children and their parents located in D city, Gyeongbuk Province. Instruments were the Children's Linguistic Ability Test (Suk Im Lee, 2006), and questionnaires to measure the physical and literacy environment at home and parents' socio-economic status. Results showed that parents' socio-economic status and application of a literacy environment directly caused children's literacy; physical surroundings and an environment of literacy were variables that effected children's literacy indirectly.
The purpose of this study was to examine parents' selection factors and satisfaction degree in selecting an early childhood education institute according to various types of early childhood education institutes. The subjects were 650 parents of early childhood education institutes from Andong city. The result of the study can be summarized as follows. The parents' consideration degrees in the selection factors were different according to the types of early childhood education institutes. The parents' satisfaction degree on the early childhood education institutes was also different according to the types of early childhood education institutes. This result might be helpful in determining future directions for the improvement of the qualitative growth of early childhood education reflecting the demands and characteristics of parents.
