The Energy Flow and Mineral Cycles in a Zoysia japonica and a Miscanthus sinensis Ecosystem on Mt. Kwanak 11. The Cycles of Al (관악산의 잔디와 억새 생태계에 있어서 에너지 흐름과 무기물의 순환 11.알루미늄의 순환)

  • The investigation was cycle of aluminum of surface soil elements in dynamic grassland ecosystems at a steady state in a Zoysia japonica and a Miscanthus sinensis ecosystem in Mt. Kwanak, Korea. Average amounts of total storage for aluminum in Z japonica and M. sinensis grasslands were 8,426mg /$m^2$ and 7,849mg /$m^2$ respectively. Decay constants estimated on the base of experimental and mathematical model, were 0.04 in Z japonica grassland, and 0.08 in M. sinensis grassland. Half time to decay aluminum of litter soils were 17.33 years in Z japonica grass-land, and 8.66 years in Al. sinensis grassland. 95% decay times in Z japonica, and in M. sinensis grassland were 75.0 years and 35.0 years respectively. Needed times to lose almost all of elements in Z japonica and M. sinensis grassland were 125.0 years, and 62.50 years respectively. The metals were losed more rapidly in M. sinensis than in Z japonica grassland. The cycle of aluminum was investigated to be related with soil acidity. Key words: Cycle of aluminum, Zoysia japonica. Support vector ensemble for incipient fault diagnosis in nuclear plant components

  • The randomness and incipient nature of certain faults in reactor systems warrant a robust and dynamic detection mechanism. Existing models and methods for fault diagnosis using different mathematical/statistical inferences lack incipient and novel faults detection capability. To this end, we propose a fault diagnosis method that utilizes the flexibility of data-driven Support Vector Machine (SVM) for component-level fault diagnosis. The technique integrates separately-built, separately-trained, specialized SVM modules capable of component-level fault diagnosis into a coherent intelligent system, with each SVM module monitoring sub-units of the reactor coolant system. To evaluate the model, marginal faults selected from the failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) are simulated in the steam generator and pressure boundary of the Chinese CNP300 PWR (Qinshan I NPP) reactor coolant system, using a best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code, RELAP5/SCDAP Mod4.0. Multiclass SVM model is trained with component level parameters that represent the steady state and selected faults in the components. For optimization purposes, we considered and compared the performances of different multiclass models in MATLAB, using different coding matrices, as well as different kernel functions on the representative data derived from the simulation of Qinshan I NPP. An optimum predictive model - the Error Correcting Output Code (ECOC) with TenaryComplete coding matrix - was obtained from experiments, and utilized to diagnose the incipient faults. Some of the important diagnostic results and heuristic model evaluation methods are presented in this paper.

Design of Creep Function for Forklift Automatic Transmission (지게차 자동변속기 저속주행기능 설계)

  • A forklift is a powered industrial vehicle used to lift and move materials over short distances. Nowadays, almost all forklifts are equipped with an automatic transmission due to its improved operator comfort and increased productivity. Thanks to marked improvement of transmission control unit equipped with highly-advanced microcontrollers, recently developed automatic transmission for forklift have various auxiliary functions such as creep, auto retardation, and automatic shift with excellent shift quality. This paper deals with the creep function which enables one to maneuver a forklift at the designated low speed by slip control of clutches. The design of creep function was based on four modes of creep operation depending on the status of the operator's shift lever and accelerator pedal. Control algorithms and control parameters for each mode were designed to achieve the desired static and dynamic performance. Vehicle test for the designed creep function was carried out with an independently developed embedded controller. Test results confirmed good creep speed control without speed error at a steady state with a mild shift shock during mode changes by stepping or releasing the accelerator.

Development of a Lightweight Prediction Model of Fuel Injection Rates from High Pressure Fuel Injectors (고압 인젝터의 분사율 예측을 위한 경량 모델 개발)

  • To meet stringent emission regulations of automotive engines, fuel injection control techniques have advanced based on reliable and fast computing prediction models. This study aims to develop a reliable lightweight prediction model of fuel injection rates using a small number of input parameters and based on simple fluid dynamic theories. The prediction model uses the geometry of the injector nozzle, needle motion data, injection conditions and the fuel properties. A commercial diesel injector and US No. 2 diesel were used as the test injector and fuel, respectively. The needle motion data were measured using X-ray phase-contrast imaging technique under various fuel injection pressures and injection pulse durations. The actual injector rate profiles were measured using an injection rate meter for the validation of the model prediction results. In the case of long injection durations with the steady-state operation, the model prediction results showed over 99 % consistency with the measurement results. However, in the case of short injection cases with the transient operation, the prediction model overestimated the injection rate that needs to be further improved.

  • The main research content of this paper is to evaluate the structural integrity and the cooling performance of 4250 kVA power transformer with ONAN(Oil Natural and Air Natural) mode. The dynamic analysis is used to verify the structural safety of the transformer by seismic loading. The transformer structure is simplified and NX software is used to build a three-dimensional model, and ANSYS commercial software is used to calculate the stress and deformation by applying corresponding load. The analysis result was evaluated whether it satisfies the design requirements according to the IEEE Std 693 standard. In terms of thermal analysis to evaluate the cooling performance, the thermal physical model is used to calculate the heat exchange between the radiator and the tank in the steady state, and the result is input into the Fluent software to calculate the internal temperature field of the transformer tank, which reduces the calculation cost of thermal fluid. Comparing the simulated hot spot temperature and top oil temperature of the transformer with the calculation results of the IEC60076 classic model, it is found that the error is only 1.9%.

Rotordynamic Analysis of Labyrinth Seal with Swirl Brake (스월 브레이크가 장착된 래버린스 씰의 동특성 해석)

  • In this research, the rotordynamic characteristics of the labyrinth seal with and without swirl brake were predicted using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model. Based on previous studies, a simple swirl brake consisting of square vanes without stagger angle is designed and placed in front of the seal inlet. The rotating frame of reference is utilized to consider the whirling motion of the rotor in the steady-state analysis since the whirling motion is transient behavior in nature. CFD analysis was performed in the range of -1 to 1 pre-swirl ratio for a given seal and swirl brake design and operating conditions. The CFD analysis result shows that the swirl brake effectively reduces the pre-swirl since the circumferential fluid velocity of labyrinth seal with swirl brake was lower than that without swirl brake. The cross-coupled stiffness coefficient, which is greatly affected by the circumferential fluid velocity, increased with an increasing pre-swirl ratio in a seal without a swirl brake but showed a low value in a seal with a swirl brake. The change in the damping coefficient was relatively small. The effective damping coefficient of the labyrinth seal with swirl brake was generally constant and showed a higher value than the labyrinth seal without swirl brake.

  • 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BDO), which is used in various fields such as cosmetics and fertilizers, is a high value-added substance and the demand for it is gradually increasing. 2,3-BDO produced from the fermentation of microorganisms not only contains by-products of fermentation, but also varies greatly in feed composition depending on fermentation conditions, so it is difficult to efficiently operate the separation process to reach the target purity of the product. Therefore, in this study, through dynamic optimization of the bio-based 2,3-BDO distillation process, the optimal control route was explored to control the 2,3-BDO concentration of the bottom product to 99 wt% or more, when feed concentration changes. Steady and dynamic state process simulation, proportional integral (PI) controller design, and dynamic optimization were sequentially performed. As a result, the error between the 2,3-BDO concentration and the set point of the bottom product was reduced by 75.2%.

Development of System for Measuring Evaporation Rate through Porous Medium in Fuel Cells (연료전지 다공성막을 통한 수분증발량의 정량적 측정에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Removing residual water in a fuel cell is a critical operational process for managing its performance and controlling its lifetime. Understanding the mechanism of water transport in fuel cells is essential for the design of the water removal process. In this study, an experimental method for measuring the water evaporation rate through a gas diffusion layer, which is a porous medium, under steady-state conditions was developed. Experimental bench tests were conducted to apply the developed method. Then, the effects of various parameters of the drying gas and the gas diffusion layer were experimentally measured. The water evaporation rate increased as the humidity of the drying gas decreased and the flow rate of the drying gas increased. In addition, a thinner gas diffusion layer yielded a higher water evaporation rate.

Experimental Study of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Performance Under Low Operating Temperatures (상온 작동 환경하에서의 고분자 전해질막 연료전지의 성능에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) were investigated at low operating temperatures under steady-state and dynamic conditions. The performance of the PEMFC was analyzed according to the external humidifying rate and air stoichiometry. The ohmic resistance was also investigated using EIS tests. At the operating temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, voltage fluctuation occurred to a greater degree compared to that at $45^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it was found that the air stoichiometry should be higher than 2.5 for the stable operation of the fuel cell. In addition, the relative humidity of the reactant gases should be higher than 60 to reduce the ohmic resistance.

MAX-MIN Flow Control Supporting Dynamic Bandwidth Request of Sessions (세션의 동적 대역폭 요구를 지원하는 최대-최소 흐름제어)

  • When the bandwidth resources in a packet-switched network are shared among sessions by MAX-MIN flow control each session is required to transmit its data into the network subject to the MAX-MIN fair rate which is solely determined by network loadings. This passive behavior of sessions if fact can cause seri-ous QoS(Quality of Service) degradation particularly for real-time multimedia sessions such as video since the rate allocated by the network can mismatch with what is demanded by each session for its QoS. In order to alleviate this problem we extend the concept of MAX-MIN fair bandwidth allocations as follows: Individual bandwidth demands are guaranteed if the network can accommodate them and only the residual network band-width is shared in the MAX-MIN fair sense. On the other hand if sum of the individual bandwidth demands exceeds the network capacity the shortage of the bandwidth is shared by all the sessions by reducing each bandwidth guarantee by the MAX-MIN fair division of the shortage. we present a novel flow control algorithm to achieve this extended MAX-MIN fairness and show that this algorithm can be implemented by the existing ATM ABR service protocol with minor changes. We not only analyze the steady state asymptotic stability and convergence rate of the algorithm by appealing to control theories but also verify its practical performance through simulations in a variety of network scenarios.
