In this study, activated carbon in a powder form was used to remove dissolved ammonia which causes a fouling smell in water. Since the adsorption capacity of common powder activated carbon is not high enough, we prepared powder activated carbon deposited on an acid solution to enhance the adsorption capacity. The acid-impregnated activated carbon was applied on the surface of porous fibril support ($10{\sim}50{\mu}m$) by which adsorption and separation processes take place simultaneously by varying effective pressure. As the result, the ammonia removal efficiency is above 60% in the mixing process which is 10~15% higher than general powder activated carbon. From the result of an experiment on the pure permeable test of a dynamic membrane, its transmittance is 400~700 LMH (liter per hour), indicating that the prepared membrane works as a microfiltration membrane. Therefore, it is expected that the membrane prepared in this way would improve the efficiency of water treatment than conventional membranes.
Two computational intelligence techniques namely artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) are employed to model the permeate flux based on seven input variables including time, transmembrane pressure, rotating velocity, the pore diameter of the membrane, dynamic viscosity, concentration and density of the feed fluid. The best-fit model was selected through the trial-error method and the two statistical parameters including the coefficient of determination (R2) and the average absolute relative deviation (AARD) between the experimental and predicted data. The obtained results reveal that the optimized ANN model can predict the permeate flux with R2 = 0.999 and AARD% = 2.245 versus the SVM model with R2 = 0.996 and AARD% = 4.09. Thus, the ANN model is found to predict the permeate flux with high accuracy in comparison to the SVM approach.
The wave interaction with flexible membrane such as PVC and fabrics is studied to prove its applicability to portable breakwaters. To obtain the wave exciting force acting on flexible membrane, eigen-function expansion method is employed. The effect of flexible is involved in body boundary condition in which x-directional displacement of membrane is obtained by solving the linear membrane equation. Displacement of membrane is assumed to be small compared to wavelength, therefore the tensile force of membrane remains constant. As the numerical examples, transmission and reflection coefficients according to the change of tensile forces are investigated. The hydrodynamic force on membrane, the dynamic tension in the mooring lines and the vertical displacement profile of membrane are also calculated. It is suggested that the flexible membrane can be used to engineering material for the future coastal/ocean applications.

The purpose of this study is to propose the method of determining the initial fabric membrane structures surface and membrane patterning procedures. Tension structure, such as, fabric membrane structures and cable-net, is stabilized by their initial prestress and boundary condition. The process to find initial structural overall shape of tension structures produced by initial prestress called Shape Finding or Shape Analysis. One of the most important factor for the design of membrane structures is to search initial smooth surface, because unlike steel or concrete building elements which resist loads in bending, all tension structure forces are carried within the surface by membrane stress or cable tension. To obtain initial surface of fabric membrane element in large deformation analysis, the membrane element is idealized as cable using a technique with Force-density method. and that result is compared with well-known nonlinear numerical method, such as Newton-raphson method and Dynamic relaxation method. The shape resulting from Force-density method has been dealt with as the initial membrane shape and used patterning procedures.
Protein affinity membrane was prepared via the coating of chitosan gel on the porous flat polysulfone membrane surface, followed by the immobilization f the reactive dye (Cibacron Blue 3GA) to the chitonsan gel. The maximum protein binding capacity of affinity membrane was about 70${\mu}g/cm^2$ determined by the batch adsorption experiments of human serum albumin (HSA). Using module of this membrane, the characteristics of protein chromatography were investigated through the experiments of elution and frontal chromatography of HSA. This membrane module promises as a chromatography column, since it represented a lower pressure drop and a greater reproducibility. The protein separation ratio was significantly influenced by the flow rate of mobile phase and the injection quantity of HSA. The dynamic protein binding capacity of module decreased from the equilibrium binding capacity with increasing flow rate and approached the value of 15 - 20 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ for flow rates above 6 mL/min.

The ultrafiltration behavior of dilute colloidal solution containing Si particles has been investigated. The experiments in cross flow mode have been performed at different operating condition by using the membrane with 20 kDa cut-off. The flux decline was due to the development of membrane fouling which was a dynamic process of two distinctive stages. For the high trans-membrane pressure, the pore blocking resistance was dominant at the initial period of filtraion and was followed by the cake resistance. And for the low cross flow velocity, the membrane fouling was governed by the cake filtration model at the initial stage of filtration process. Flux jump was observed temporally during the membrane filtration of mixed feed solution.

The aim of this study was to confirm the feasibility of the electro-coagulation process as a pre-treatment for the membrane separation of anaerobic digestion effluents to minimize membrane fouling. The reduction of membrane fouling was evaluated according to the number of electrodes (immersed surface area of electrodes), current density and contact time. In the case of the small surface area of electrodes, the increased electric field strength resulted in a soluble COD increase due to the destruction of the microbial flocs and/or cells, whereas large changes in the soluble COD were not observed in the case of the high surface area of electrodes. On the other hand, the T-P concentration decreased as a result of the precipitation of aluminum ions and phosphates. The membrane permeation flux increased and the fouling resistance (Rc+Rf) decreased with increasing electric current density. Although the particle size of the anaerobic digestion effluent increased slightly, it was not related directly to the reduced fouling phenomena. The main mechanism for the enhanced flux was attributed to the inorganic particulate produced during electrocoagulation, such as $AlPO_4$, which acted as a dynamic membrane deposited on the membrane surface.

Solving a system of linear or non-linear equations is required to analyze any kind of structures. There are many ways to solve a system of equations, and they can be classified as implicit and explicit techniques. The explicit methods eliminate round-off errors and use less memory. The dynamic relaxation method (DR) is one of the powerful and simple explicit processes. The important point is that the DR does not require to store the global stiffness matrix, for which it just uses the residual loads vector. In this paper, a new approach to the DR method is expressed. In this approach, the damping, mass and time steps are similar to those of the traditional method of dynamic relaxation. The difference of this proposed method is focused on the method of calculating the damping. The proposed method is expressed such that the time step is constant, damping is equal to zero except in steps with maximum energy and the concentrated damping can be applied to minimize the energy of system in this step. In this condition, the calculation of damping in all steps is not required. Then the volume of computation is reduced. The DR method for form-finding of membrane structures is employed in this paper. The form-finding of the three plans related to the membrane structures with different loading is considered to investigate the efficiency of the proposed method. The numerical results show that the convergence rate based on the proposed method increases in all cases than other methods.
Membrane distillation (MD) is one of the water treatment processes which involves the momentum, heat and mass transfer through channels and membrane. In this study, CFD modeling has been used to simulate the heat and mass transfer in the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Also, the effect of operating parameters on the water flux is investigated. The result shows a good agreement with the experimental result. Results indicated that, while feed temperature is increasing in the feed side, water flux improves in the permeate side. Since higher velocity leads to the higher mixing and turbulence in the feed channel, water flux rises due to this increase in the feed velocity. Moreover, results revealed that temperature polarization coefficient is rising as flow rate (velocity) increases and it is decreasing while the feed temperature increases. Lastly, the thermal efficiency of direct contact membrane distillation is defined, and results confirm that thermal efficiency improves while feed temperature increases. Also, flow rate increment results in enhancement of thermal efficiency.
