  • In this paper, six harmonic injection PWM method for reducing total harmonic distortion in single switch three phase discontinuous conduction mode boost converter is presented. In the proposed method, periodic six harmonic voltage is injected in the control circuit to vary the duty ratio of the converter switch within a line cycle so that the fifth order harmonic of the input current is reduced. Experimental results are verified by converter operating at 400V/6kW with three phase 140V~220V input.

  • Urea-SCR system is currently regarded as promising NOx reduction technology for diesel engines. SCR system has to achieve maximal NOx conversion in combination with minimal $NH_3$ slip. In this study, model based open loop control for urea injection was developed and assessed in the European Transient Cycle (ETC) for heavy duty diesel engine. On the basis of the transient modeling, the kinetic parameters of the $NH_3$ adsorption and desorption are calibrated with the experimental results performed over the zeolite based catalyst. $NH_3$ storage or surface coverage of SCR catalyst can not be measured directly and has to be calculated, which is taken into account as a control parameter in this model. In order to reduce $NH_3$ slip while maintaining NOx reduction, $NH_3$ storage control algorithm was applied to correct the basic urea quantity. If the actual $NH_3$ surface coverage is higher than the maximal $NH_3$ surface coverage, the urea injection quantity is significantly reduced in the ETC cycle. By applying this logic, the resulting $NH_3$ slip peak can be avoided effectively. With optimizing the kinetic parameters based on standard SCR reaction, it suggests that a simplified, less accurate model can be effective to evaluate the capability of model based control in the ETC cycle.

  • Stepping motor normally operates without feedback and may loss the synchronization. This problem can be prevented by using positional feedback. This paper introduces one method for closed loop control of stepping motor and a method for combining full-step control and micro-step control. This combination controlling apparatus can perform position control with high accuracy in a high speed, so that it will not suffer from vibration (or hunting) problem when stopping motor. Controlling apparatus contains a position counter block for detecting rotor position of stepping motor, a driving block for supplying current to windings of stepping motor, a control block for comparing output signal of position counter block with command position (desired position) and outputting current command signal based on deviation between current position and command position of rotor. To output current command signal, the control block refers to a sine wave data table. This table contains value of duty cycle of Pulse Width Modulation signal. As the second object of this paper, the process of building this data table is also presented.

  • In this paper, a simple control method for two-stage utility grid-connected photovoltaic power conditioning systems (PCS) is proposed. This approach enables maximum power point (MPP) tracking control with post-stage inverter current information instead of calculating solar array power, which significantly simplifies the controller and the sensor. Furthermore, there is no feedback loop in the pre-stage converter to control the solar array voltage or current because the MPP tracker drives the converter switch duty cycle. This simple PCS control strategy can reduce the cost and size, and can be utilized with a low cost digital processor. For verification of the proposed control strategy, a 2.5kW two-stage photovoltaic grid-connected PCS hardware which consists of a boost converter cascaded with a single-phase inverter was built and tested.

  • To meet the NOx limit without a penalty of fuel consumption, urea-SCR system is currently regarded as promising NOx reduction technology for diesel engines. SCR system has to achieve maximal NOx conversion in combination with minimal $NH_3$ slip. In this study, the performance characteristics of urea-SCR system with open loop control were assessed in the European Transient Cycle(ETC) for heavy duty diesel engine. The SCR inlet temperaure varied in the range of 200 to $340^{\circ}C$ in the ETC cycle. Open loop control calculated the urea flow rate based on the NOx and NSR map which gave for each combination of SCR inlet temperature and space velocity the normalized $NH_3$ to NOx stoichiometric ratio which resulted in a steady-state $NH_3$ slip of 20ppm. During the ETC cycle, the open loop control with the optimized NSR offset achieved NOx reduction of 80% while keeping the average $NH_3$ slip below 10ppm and maximum 20ppm. It was also found that NOx sensor was cross-sensitive to $NH_3$ and a control strategy for cross-sensitivity compensation was required in order to use a NOx sensor as feedback device.

  • This paper presents two different robust controllers for boost converters with two stages in a cascade. The first robust controller is monovariable; that is, the duty-cycle is the same for the two switches. The monovariable controller ensures that some prescribed constraints on pole placement and control effort are met, and optimizes the load disturbance rejection, while takes into account the uncertainty in certain parameters. The first controller is then compared with a multivariable robust controller; that is, with independent duty cycles in each switch. The multivariable controller takes into account the same uncertainty, constraints and optimization function. The comparison shows that the multivariable controller performs better at the expense of a slightly more complex implementation; that is, the multivariable controller provides a better rejection of the load disturbance. The paper also describes simulations and experimental results that are in perfect agreement with theoretical derivations.

  • The Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) accreditation system was initiated in 2013 in the form of mandatory accreditation system in order to improve patient safety and the quality of medical service at LTCHs. By June 2016, the accredited LTCHs were 76.2%. This research was conducted to review the implementation process in the first cycle and to promote development of the second cycle of LTCH accreditation system. There are some changes which reinforced the accreditation standards, accreditation survey, and public access to accreditation results in order to strengthen patient safety in the first cycle LTCH accreditation system. LTCHs which participated in the accreditation system achieved certain outcomes in respect to patient safety and employee satisfaction. However, there are several urgent problems in placement criteria of night duty health care providers, reinforcement plans in the accreditation system, and incentives for accredited hospitals. In order to solve these problems, the most important thing is to clearly recognize the fact that the healthcare accreditation system is not the means for control and regulate hospitals but a system to induce hospitals to continue to strive for improvements in patient safety and medical service quality. In addition, it is required that LTCHs, accrediting agency and the Ministry of Health and Welfare compromise and cooperate to seek solutions every time issues related to the accreditation system arise.
