  • Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the correlation between cervical, lumbar lordosis and low back pain(LBP), sex, age and duration of LBP. Methods : Cervical, lumbar lordosis(by Cobb's Method) and Ferguson's angle were measured and evaluated in LBP group and control. Radiograph was taken in lateral direction, erect position. Cobb's angle between C1-C7, C2-C7, L1-L5, L1-S1 and Ferguson's angle were measured and investigated with statistical program. Results: 1. Cervical lordosis have no relation to LBP, sex and age. 2. Lumbar lordosis and Ferguson's angle have no relation to LBP and sex. 3. Cobb's angle L1-L5 have no relation to age. Lumbar lordosis from L1 to S1(Cobb's angle L1-S1) increased in old group(Age>40) compared to young group(Age${\leq}$40). 4. In LBP group, Cobb's angle L1-S1 have no relation to duration of LBP. Lumbar lordosis from L1 to L5(Cobb's angle L1-L5) decreased in acute LBP group compared to Chronic group. Conclusions : Cervical, lumbar lordosis and Ferguson's angle have no relation to LBP and sex. As far as age is concerned, old group have larger lumbosacral lordosis than young group. Acute LBP group have smaller lumbar lordosis(Cobb's angle L1-L5) than chronic group.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the clinical effect of acupuncture on microtraumatic injuries of the knee joint. Methods : Among the outpatients with knee joint pain who visited to Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, National Medical Center from February 2000 to September 2000, we selected 15 cases that showed normal finding in both X-ray and neurological examination, and that were categorized into microtraumatic injuries by the physical examination based on the Cyriax's orthopedic medicine. During acupuncture therapy, the patients were ordered to move involved side actively. The effect was assessed through questionnaires of CNRS(Cincinnati Knee Rating System). Results : We investigated 11 female and 4 male patients. The most common distribution of age was 30's(40%). The most commom duration of symtoms was from 3 to 5 months(40%). The most common microtraumatic injury was pes anserinus bursitis(33.3%), and followed by iliotibial band friction syndrome(20%), and patellar tendinitis(20%). In the CNRS, the mean number of before treatment was 60.6 and after was 66.5. 10 cases among the 15 patients were improved(66.6%). Conclusions : These results suggest that the acupuncture therapy combined with active movements of involved side was effective treatment modality on microtraumatic injuries of the knee joint.

  • Objective : This study is designed to evaluate the correlation between the data of DITI (Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging) and the clinical symptoms in the patients with low back pain. Methods : Among the outpatients with back pain who visited to Department of Acupunture & Moxibustion, Tae gu Oriental Hopital of Kyung San University from January 2000 to August, we selected 115 cases that examined DITI. We evaluated the correlation between the data of DITI examination and the clinical symptoms (Distribution of Sex and Age, Duration of Disease, Main Sign, Grade of Clinical Symptoms, Diagnosis according to Symptoms(辨證),) in the patients with low back pain. Results & Conclusion : 1. The thermal changes in terms of the duration of disease : The acutest period has the highest thermal change. Also, the longer the duration of disease was, the higher the termal change was. It increased in the order of the acutest period, the less acute period, and the the chronical period. 2. Thermal changes due to the main symptom : The degree of thermal change was as follows (from the highest to the lowest): first, back and knee pain, second, back and leg pain, third, back and buttock pain, fourth, numbness of leg, and fifth, back and dorsum pain. 3. Thermal changes in terms of the grade of clinical symptoms : The more servious the symptoms were, the higher the thermal change was. It was increased in the order of Gr 1, Gr 2, Gr 3, and Gr 4. 4. Thermal changes depdning on symptoms diagnosis : Chwaseom(挫閃) has the highest temperature, $0.87{\pm}0.49^{\circ}C$. 5. Thermal changes before and after treatment : Before treatment, the average thermal change was $0.83^{\circ}C$ but after treatment, it was decreased to $0.38^{\circ}C$. For the above symptoms, if DITI is used, the diagnosis is easier based on the medical history of the patient who has back pain, and the degree of pain. However, if thermal change is soly used for diagnosis, it will be hard to determine the nature of sickness. Therefore, it should be folllowed by other supplementary examination.

  • The purpose of this study was to review randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of pes anserinus tendinitis or bursitis (PATB) syndrome in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database to investigate the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine treatment for PATB syndrome. There were 20 RCTs published from 2001 to 2021 which were selected for analysis by publication year, number of samples, evaluation criteria, treatment duration, and treatment method. Out of the 142 retrieved RCTs, 20 were relevant to this review, and had performed Chinese medicine treatments including acupuncture (the most common treatment typically using acupoints SP10, ST35, SP9, and LR8), manipulation (typically using acupoints ST35, SP10, and SP9), and external application therapy (typically herbal medicine) in the treatment of PATB syndrome. Chinese medicine treatments were used widely in the treatment of PATB syndrome. We hope in the future, this review may initiate the development of treatments for PATB syndrome using Korean medicine.

  • In this paper, we present electronic acupuncture needles we have developed using intelligence technology based on Bluetooth in order to allow anyone to simply receive customized remote diagnosis and treatment by clicking on the menu of the smartphone regardless of time and place. In order to determine the health condition and disease of patients, we have developed a software and a hardware of electronic acupuncture needles, operating on Bluetooth which transmits biometric data to oriental medical doctors using the functions of automatically determining pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, and oxygen saturation; the functions are most commonly used in herbal treatment. In addition, using fuzzy logic and reasoning based on smartphones, we present in this paper an algorithm and the results of completion of hardware implementation for electronic acupuncture needles, appropriate for the body conditions of patients; the algorithm and the hardware implementation are for a treatment time duration by electronic acupuncture needles, an automatic determinations of pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, and oxygen saturation, a function implementation for automatic display of acupuncture point, and a strength adjustment of electronic acupuncture needles. As a result of our simulation, we have shown that the treatment of patients, performed using an Electronic Acupuncture Needles based on intelligence, is more efficient compared to the treatment that was performed before.
