  • This paper presents the damage assessment of a free-fall dropped object on the seabed. The damage to a dropped object totally depends on the relationship between the impact energy and the soil strength at the mudline. In this study, unexpected dropping scenarios were first assumed by varying the relevant range of the impact velocity, structure geometry at the moment of impact, and soil strength profile along the penetration depth. Theoretical damage assessments were then undertaken for a free-fall dropping event with a fixed final embedment depth for the structure. This paper also describes the results of a three-dimensional large deformation finite element analysis undertaken for the purpose of validation. The analyses were carried out using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach, modifying the simple elastic-perfectly plastic Tresca soil model. The validation exercises for each dropping scenario showed good agreement, and the present numerical approach was capable of predicting the behavior of a free-fall dropped object.

  • Rolling bearings are classified one of the most important machine elements. The various function of bearings are greatly influenced by grease, and higher performance of rolling bearing greases is required to improve bearing lubrication. Three urea/ether oil greases with different composition were synthesized to compare the performance of these greases. The typical grease physical properties were investigated, and life test of these greases was conducted by FE-9 grease life tester. The grease with higher content of the thickener showed higher performance. After these preliminary test, twelve greases were synthesized and evaluated the performance of dropping point and OIT value. And optimized conditions for grease synthesis were selected by SSRED (Six Sigma Robust Engineering Design) using dropping point and OIT value respectively. The optimized grease using OIT value showed longer grease life than that using dropping point. Two greases were synthesized following the optimum synthesis conditions by means of OIT value. Then grease life and other properties of these greases were investigated. These two greasaes showed longer grease life than typical urea/ether oil grease.

  • One of the most frequently used method for measurement of the degree of sizing (viz., hydrophobicity) is the Stockigt test. However, the Stockigt test was influenced by various factors such as dropping height, dropping amount, dropping speed and viewing angle. The resultant data of the sizing degree on the same specimen also varied according to different testers. Thus, the Stockigt test should be modified to be regarded as a highly reliable and reproducible standard method. For modifying the Stockigt test, it was required to quantify red coloration by reaction between 1% ferric chloride and 2% ammonium thiocyante during Stockigt testing. The cameras capturing the serial images during the red coloration process were the CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)-type and CCD (Charge Coupled Device)-type cameras. For measurement based on KS M 7025, the CCD-type camera must be used due to its high resolution, and on the other hand, for measurement based on Tappi Useful Method 429, the CMOS-type camera may be used owing to its low resolution. It was needed to covert the RGB values of a droplet image into HSV(Hue, Saturation, and Value) values because the human eyes are much closer to HSV than RGB. Among HSV values, the Hue value was accepted as the most reliable index consistent with the red coloration process by excluding the surrounding conditions such as light, tester's movement etc.

  • Adaptive and Strict Packet Dropping mechanism we proposed in this paper drops adaptively packets for the congestion control, as predicting traffic pattern between each cycle. Therefore the proposed mechanism makes up for the drawback of RIO mechanism and minimizes the wastes of the bandwidth being capable of predicting in Dynamic and Strict Packet Dropping (DSPD) mechanism. And we executed a simulation and analyzed the throughput and packet drop rate based on the Sending Drop Precedence changing dynamically depending on the network traffic and compared RIO and the DSPD. The results show that the proposed mechanism provides better performance on drop precedence levels and stricter drop precedence policy for AF class than RIO and the DSPD mechanism.

The various function of bearings are greatly influenced by grease, and higher performance of rolling bearing greases is required in improve bearing lubrication. Three urea/ether oil greases with identical composition were synthesized to compare the performance of these greases according to the thickener content of grease. The typical grease physical properties were investigated. And life test of these greases was conducted by FE-9 grease life tester. The characteristics of the greases before and after life test were investigated using FT-IR, microscope, OIT and TAN meter. Large differences in the grease performance depending on the content of the thickener were observed. The grease with higher content of the hickener showed higher performance such as long life time and low TAN value. After preliminary test, twelve greases were synthesized and evaluated the performance of dropping point and OIT, then optimized two greases were selected by SSRED (Six Sigma Robust Engineering Design) using dropping point and OIT data. Characteristics of the optimized two greases were on the same level with estimated value. The optimized grease by means of OIT value showed longer grease life in comparison with optimized grease by dropping point. However two greases showed higher performance than typical urea/ether oil.

  • The common underwater rock removal methods involve underwater blasting and crane's chisel dropping impact method. From an environmental point of view, these methods cause ground vibrations and underwater noise. At the site for this study, a method of dropping heavyweight chisel is selected to remove the underwater bedrock near the ferry rack in the course of improving the cargo handling ability of the loading dock. A prediction formula for the vibration was obtained based on the measurement and evaluation of the vibrations caused by the chisel dropping impacts during the test droppings. The prediction formula was successfully applied to the main construction for securing the stability of the structure.

  • Polarography is a subclass of voltammetry where the working electrode is a dropping mercury electrode. More, I developed the experiment for raising up mercury electrode. In Voltammetry, information about an analyte is obtained by measuring the current as the potential is varied at oxidation-reduction reaction. A plot of current vs. potential in a polarography experiment shows the current oscillations correspoding to the drops of Hg falling from the capillary. The drops growth causes capacitive and faradic current. These changing current effects combined with experiments where the potential is continuously changed can result in noisy traces. The raising up type improved upon the method of dropping in hardware. In reduction of the noise, moving average smoothing method have been used. But the other procedure is introduced based on Fourier transformation. So FFT and IFFT engine was implemented and installed in my experiment. However, after experimentation, peak height as the measuring parameter gave a good linear relationship to concentration. The resolution of potential peaks of various kinds, using Zn and Cu as the example, was improved using the smoothing method.

  • In this paper we propose a Fractional Channel Reservation (FCS) scheme to satisfy a desired handoof dropping probability and to reduce the blocking probability of new calls using mobility characteristics and incoming handoff rate in mobile communication networks. When the ratio of the handoff call arrival rate is less then the ratio of the new call arrival rete, the proposed scheme is capable of determining the number of the guard channels which can guarantee the Quality of Service(QoS) in terms of the request handoff dropping probability and allocating dynamically the wireless channels the new calls according to the rest of the guard channels to reduce the new call blocking probability. Also we perform mathematical analysis and simulation to evaluate the performance of proposed scheme and compare to conventional guard channel scheme in terms of dropping probability blocking probability and the utilization efficiency of wireless channels.

  • In this paper we consider a local area network (LAN) of dual mode service where one is a token bus and the other is a carrier sense multiple access with a collision detection (CSMA/CD) bus. The objective of the paper is to find the overall cell/packet dropping probability of a dual mode LAN for finite length queue M/G/1(m) traffic. Here, the offered traffic of the LAN is taken to be the equivalent carried traffic of a one-millisecond delay. The concept of a tabular solution for two-dimensional Poisson's traffic of circuit switching is adapted here to find the cell dropping probability of the dual mode packet service. Although the work is done for the traffic of similar bandwidth, it can be extended for the case of a dissimilar bandwidth of a circuit switched network.
