The contents of some chemical constituents in several parts of Panax ginseng were investigated. Each part of ginseng was extracted with 70% ethanol and then water. The yield of extract was the highest in fine root, and relatively low in roughly dried ginseng and white ginseng, On the other hand, the contents of total sugars in white ginseng and seedling ginseng were high, but low in leaf and peel. The contents of crude protein in roughly dried ginseng and white ginseng were high, but those in leaf, rhizome (nod) and peel were low. The content of crude fat was higher in leaf than in other parts of ginseng plants and that was the lowest in fine root. Among free sugars, the content of fructose was high in leaf and rhizome, but that was the lowest in fine root. In the case of glucose content, leaf contained the highest amount, but fine root did the lowest. Sucrose contents in white, roughly dried and lateral roots were high, whereas that in leaf was low.

Peony is commonly used as roots that peeled and dried. But intact root contains higher medicinal constituents than peeled root (machine peeling). The yield of roots was also higher in intact roots. Use of intact root saved the labor time for peeling and 15% of root from yield loss by peeling. Paeoniflorin content was different with each zones of root. The content of Paeoniflorin was 5.11% in epidermis and 3.28% in cortex. When peeled peony roots were dried at hot air after briquet fire drying, root color was good for commercialization. But color of intact root was good at hot air drying without briquet fire drying. The required time for drying was longer in drying of intact roots than peeled roots drying.

In recent, a demand for sweetpotato cultivation technology to expand the cultivated area of field crops in paddy fields is increasing. This research was carried out to establish suitable varieties and cultivation techniques for mass production of sweetpotato for processing raw materials. For the selection of varieties suitable for cultivation in rice fields for each processing purpose, 12 varieties in 2018 (8 varieties for starch, 4 as dried, chips and beverages), and 6 varieties in 2019 (4 varieties for starch including 'Daeyumi'; chips, semi-dried 'Pungwonmi'; beverage and coloring 'Shinjami') were used. Sweetpotato stems were planted in mid-May and harvested after 120 days to investigate the yield. Results revealed that the yield of sweetpotato (2019) for starch production, varied with variety as 'Gogeonmi' 3,926 > 'Jinhongmi' 3,428 > 'Daeyumi' 2,873 > 'Singeonmi' 2,752 kg/10a. The starch content was 20.2% in 'Daeyumi', 18.2 in 'Gogeonmi', 21.2 in 'Singeonmi', and 20.6% in 'Jinghongmi'. The total amount of starch was higher in 'Daeyumi' (730 kg/10a) and 'Gogeonmi' (731 kg/lOa). The yield of chips and edible varieties 'Pungwonmi' was 4,688 kg/10a. The yield of 'Shinjami' of purple variety such as beverages and powder was 3,139 kg/10a. Aaa result of evaluation sweetpotato yield by waterlogging treatments on different growing stages in paddy fields, the yields of 'Daeyumi' and 'Jinhongmi' varieties treated with waterlogging at the storage root formation stage decreased by 11.8% and 11.7%, respectively, compared to the control. In the case of waterlogging treatment at storage root swelling stage, Both varieties showed the lowest yield reduction at 7.0% and 4.8%, respectively. Based on these results, stable production and substitution effect of processing raw materials can be expected by cultivating sweetpotato varieties suitable for paddy cultivation.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of various fertilizer levels on the growth and yield of Scutellaria baicalensis Georg cultivated after the barley in the southern coastal areas of Korea under the non-mulching condition by direct sowing culture. The flowering date of medium dressing plot $(N\;:\;P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O=9\;:\;13.5\;:\;9 kg/10a)$ and heavy dression plot $(N\;:\;P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O=12\;:\;18\;:\;12kg/l0a)$ were July 23. The flowering date of the medium and the heavy dressing plot was delayed by 3days compared with that of non-fertilizing plot. The growth characteristics such as stem length, diameter of main stem, number of branch per plant, main root length, main root thickness and dry weight of stem leaves were more increased at medium dressing plot than that of other fertilizer levels. The root dry weight of in Scutellaria baicalensis Georg cultivated after barley was highest at the fertilizing plot of N, $P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O$ = 9 : 13.5 : 9kg/10a. The dried-root yield was 178kg in medium dressing plot, 167kg in standard dressing pot, and 126kg in non-dressing plot. The dried-root yield of medium dressing plot was 7% and 41% higher than that of standard dressing pot and non-dressing control plot, respectively.

This study was carried out to know the effect of mulching on growth and yield of Peucedanum japonicum. Time from sowing to germination was 8day at raising seedling(RS) and 40day at direct sowing(DS). The order of goodness in top part growth as follows : RS+white vinyl mulching (WVM), RS+black vinyl mulching (BVM), RS+no mulching(NM) and DS+NM. Tap root length at RS + NM was significantly shorter than those at the others. Tap root at the others was about same length. Tap root diameter was significantly larger at vinyl mulching than at no mulching and the thinnest at DS+NM. The number of supporting root at RS was more than DS as much as $4.7{\sim}7.1$. Rate of dried root weight to fresh weight was highest(30.5%) at DS+ NM and low at vinyl mulching. Dried root yield per 10a was 542kg at RS+WVM, 506kg at RS+BVM, 419kg at RS+NM and 357kg at DS. These results suggested that raising seedling and white vinyl mulching was good for culture of Peucedanum japonicum.
The result of this experiment which are conducted, to improve the cultivation technology of Alisma plantago, to increase its quantity and to contribute for stable production with Yongiun local group by examining the optimal planting density and transplanting period of double cropping of Alisma plantago in the southern region. The characters of plant height, leaf width and length tend to be reduced as the seeding period is later by the order of the 10th, 20th and 30th of July. The period required for flowering is reduced as the transplanting period is later and dense planting is applied. Plant height, the number of leaves and yield of dry root have much quantity at the dense planting density of 20$\times$ 15cm as they are transplanted later in the 30th of August or the 10th of September, but they are rather less in sparse planting density of 20$\times$25cm or 20$\times$35cm.

Background: Blind and excessive application of fertilizers was found during the cultivation of Panax notoginseng in fields, as well as increase in root rot disease incidence. Methods: Both "3414" application and orthogonal test designs were performed at Shilin county, Yunnan province, China, for NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) and mineral fertilizers, respectively. The data were used to construct the one-, two-, and three-factor quadratic regression models. The effect of fertilizer deficiency on root yield loss was also analyzed to confirm the result predicted by these models. A pot culture experiment was performed to observe the incidence rate of root rot disease and to obtain the best range in which the highest yield of root and saponins could be realized. Results: The best application strategy for NPK fertilizer was $0kg/667m^2$, $17.01kg/667m^2$, and $56.87kg/667m^2$, respectively, which can produce the highest root yield of 1,861.90 g (dried root of 100 plants). For mineral fertilizers, calcium and magnesium fertilizers had a significant and positive effect on root yield and the content of four active saponins, respectively. The severity of root rot disease increased with the increase in soil moisture. The best range of soil moisture varied from 0.56 FC (field capacity of water) to 0.59 FC, when the highest yield of root and saponins could be realized as well as the lower incidence rate of root disease. Conclusion: These results indicate that the amount of nitrogen fertilizer used in these fields is excessive and that of potassium fertilizer is deficient. Higher soil moisture is an important factor that increases the severity of the root rot disease.

We studied the effects of the seed root weight and the local varieties on the yield and the quality of Cnidium officinale Makino root. The fresh and dried root weight per plant was found to be 92.7 g and 18.5 g in the large seed root(20-25 g), while 94.5 g and 17.0 g in the small seed root(15-20 g), respectively. The fresh and dried roots were produced 906.8kg/10a and 190.2kg/10a in the large seed root, but 721.2kg/10a and 165.2kg/10a in the small seed root, respectively. The root weight per plant, root yield per 10a and diethyl ether extract contents in root of Ul-Reung cultivar were higher than those of the other varieties. The root weight per plant and root yield per 10a were positively correlated with the contents of diethyl ether extracts in the large seed root, and with the ash contents of root in the small seed root. It is recommended for the high quality root production of cnidium officinale Makino to select and cultivate the large seed root(20-25 g) of Ul-Reung cultivar.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of plant spacing on the growth and root yield at different harvesting year in Astragalus membranceus. A local variety collected in Jung Sun. Kang Won was used on the 30 and 40cm row spacing, with different spacing between plant of 5, 10, 15, 20cm respectively. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers were applied as 6, 8 and 9kg/10a respectively, with compost of 1,000kg/10a. Branches, root length, root diameter and root weight were increased in the sparse planting compared with the dense planting. But emergence date, flowering date, stem height and node number were not significantly changed with plant spacing. The highest root yield was 211.8kg/10a at the $30{\time}10cm(67\;plants/m^2)$ in 1 year old plants of Astragalus membranceus. In case of two years old plants, branches, node number, root length, root diameter and root weight were increased in the sparse planting compared to the dense planting. But harvesting ratio was decreased in the dense planting, The highest dried root yield was 292kg/10a at the $40{\time}10cm\;(25\;Plants/m^2)$. In case of 3 years old plants, aerial part and root growth pattern were similar to the 2 years old plants, The dried root yield was highest(623kg/10a) in the $40{\time}10cm(25plants/m^2)$.
The essential oil of Korean valerian root ( Valeriana fauriei roar. dasycarpa Hara) was isolated by simultaneous distillation Sl extraction. The oil content of fresh root was 0.7% (wb) and that of dried root was 2.1 5 (db) and sensory analysis of the oil indicated sweet-balsamic, woody and floral characteristic aroma notes. The oil was fractionated into one hydrocarbon fraction and three oxygenated hydrocarbon fractions by using silica gel column chromatograpy. Each fraction was analyzed by capillary GC and GC-MS. Out of 81 characterized compounds, the major compounds were a-pinene, camphene, $\beta$-pinene, bornyl acetate, borneol , bornyl iso-valerate and sesquiphellandrene and the characteristic floral and woody aroma of neutral fraction of Korean valerian root could be due to be the presence of oxygenated compounds such as borneol, bornyl acetate, bornyl iso-valerate, p-ionone ana $\beta$-ionone epoxide. Comparing the yield of Korean valerian root with those from other origins reported, oil content of Korean valerian root was higher than those of European and Indian origins.
