  • High-speed harmonic optical modulation-demodulation schemes are presented and a possibility of the schemes for applying to high-speed light wave transmission system is tested at microwave frequency range. An example of this concept is as follows : Light wave is modulated succeedingly through cascaded optical modulators by a sub-carrier to produce a modulated light wave at harmonic frequency which is higher than the feasible frequency of the individual modulators. For demodulation of the base-band signal, the high frequency optical sub-carrier is down-converted by the same kind of optical modulator with the same concept of harmonic modulation.

  • This paper presents the survey of technical trend in AD converters for wireless communication systems. This paper provides explanations about the performance measure of ADC in wireless communication application and the relation ship between BER versus effective resolution and sampling speed. The survey suggests that at least one step analog frequency down conversion is required for software defined radio systems due to current technological limit.

  • Single-phase cycloconverters are widely used for ac-ac power conversion especially for speed control of ac drives. In this paper, a new single-phase to single-phase Z-source cycloconverter topology is proposed. The proposed single-phase Z-source cycloconverter can boost to a desired voltage with various frequency. Thus, it is called a frequency step-down and amplitude voltage step-up converter. The operating principle of the proposed topology is presented. Analysis and simulation for this single-phase Z-source cycloconverter are also presented.

  • The RF front-end for L1/L2 dual-band Global Positioning System(GPS) receiver is presented in this paper. The RF front-end(down-converter) using low IF architecture consists of a wideband low noise amplifier(LNA), a current mode logic(CML) frequency divider and a I/Q down-conversion mixer with a poly-phase filter for image rejection. The current bleeding technique is used in the LNA and mixer to obtain the high gain and solve the head-room problem. The common drain feedback is adopted for low noise amplifier to achieve the wideband input matching without inductors. The fabricated RF front-end using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process shows a gain of 38 dB for L1 and 41 dB for L2 band. The measured IIP3 is -29 dBm in L1 band and -33 dBm in L2 band, The input return loss is less than -10 dB from 50 MHz to 3 GHz. The measured noise figure(NF) is 3.81 dB for L1 band and 3.71 dB for L2 band. The image rejection ratio is 36.5 dB. The chip size of RF front end is $1.2{\times}1.35mm^2$.

  • One of the nonclassical effects in two-photon interference experiments, spatial quantum beating, is observed in fourth-order interference with pairs of photons produced by a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. When photon pairs in different frequencies $\omega1$ and $\omega2$ are mixed together, and directed to two detectors, the coincidence counts exhibit a cosine modulation with difference frequency | $\omega1$- $\omega2$|. The measured coincidence counts turned out to have an interference pattern with periodicity of 10.45 ㎛ in position or 34.82fs in time delay, which corresponds to the period 2$\pi$/| $\omega1$- $\omega2$| for the beat frequency of 0.29${\times}10^{14}$Hz.

  • In this paper, K-band multi-channel receiver was designed and fabricated for low noise amplification and down conversion to L-band. The fabricated multi-channel receiver incorporates GaAs-HEMT LNA(Low noise amplifier) which provides less than a 2 dB noise figure, IR(Image Rejection) Filter for rejection of image frequency, IR(Image rejection) mixer to reject a image frequency and improve an IMD(Intermodulation Distortion) characteristic. Test results of the fabricated multi-channel receiver show less than a 3.8 dB noise figure, conversion gain of more than 27dB, and IP1dB(Input 1dB Gain Compression Point) of -9.5 dB and over.

The low noise amplifier achieved a gain of 20dB in a band between $76{\sim}77\;GHz$ with an output power of 10dBm. The chip size is $2.2mm{\times}2mm$. The driver amplifier exhibited a gain of 23dB over a $76{\sim}77\;GHz$ band with an output power of 13dBm. The chip size is $2.1mm{\times}2mm$. The frequency doubler achieved an output power of -16dBm at 76.5GHz with a conversion gain of -16dB for an input power of 10dBm and a 38.25GHz input frequency. The chip size is $1.2mm{\times}1.2mm$. The down-mixer demonstrated a measured conversion gain of over -9dB. The chip size is $1.3mm{\times}1.9mm$. The transceiver module achieved an output power of 10dBm in a band between $76{\sim}77GHz$ with a receiver P1dB of -28dBm. The module size is $8{\times}9.5{\times}2.4mm^3$. This MMIC transceiver module is suitable for the 77GHz automotive radar systems and related applications in W-band.

  • We performed experiments on Hong-Ou-Mandel type two-photon interference with frequency entangled photon pairs at 1.5 ${\mu}m$ telecommunication band generated through femtosecond pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Two different angular frequencies ${\omega}_1$ and ${\omega}_2$ were selected using CWDM(coarse wavelength division multiplexing) filters at the output ports of the interferometer. The coincidence counting rates were measured with varying path-length difference between the two interferometer arms to observe the two-photon interference patterns of spatial beating. The obtained visibilities in the net coincidence were close to the theoretical limit of 100%.

  • A model net experiment of the gape net for anchovy in Jindo, Jeollanam-do was carried out to investigate the net shape and hydrodynamic resistance using circulating water channel. The model net was made 1/33 down scale by Tauti's similarity method and the range of experimental current speed was from 0.5 knot to 3.5 knot (increasing 0.5 knot interval). The net mouth height in 0.5 knot of the minimum experiment current speed was shown 26.0 cm (full-scale conversion value 8.58 m). The net mouth height and mouth area in 1.5 knot of the same current speed with a gape net fishing ground were shown 20.0 cm (full-scale conversion value : 6.60 m) and about $507.9cm^2$ (full-scale conversion value : $55.31m^2$). The net mouth height and area were decreased with increase the experimental current speed. The hydrodynamic resistance of the model net in 1.5 knot current speed was shown 1.11 kgf and the value of full-scale conversion by Tauti's method was shown 3.996 ton.
