  • We construct new metric outer measures (multifractal analogues of the Hewitt-Stromberg measure) $H^{q,t}_{\mu}$ and $P^{q,t}_{\mu}$ lying between the multifractal Hausdorff measure ${\mathcal{H}}^{q,t}_{\mu}$ and the multifractal packing measure ${\mathcal{P}}^{q,t}_{\mu}$. We set up a necessary and sufficient condition for which multifractal Hausdorff and packing measures are equivalent to the new ones. Also, we focus our study on some regularities for these given measures. In particular, we try to formulate a new version of Olsen's density theorem when ${\mu}$ satisfies the doubling condition. As an application, we extend the density theorem given in [3].

  • For wearable health monitoring systems, a fundamental problem is the limited space for storing energy, which can be translated into a short operational life. In this paper, a highly efficient active voltage doubling rectifier with a wide input range for micro-piezoelectric energy harvesting systems is proposed. To obtain a higher output voltage, the Dickson charge pump topology is chosen in this design. By replacing the passive diodes with unbalanced-biased comparator-controlled active counterparts, the proposed rectifier minimizes the voltage losses along the conduction path and solves the reverse leakage problem caused by conventional comparator-controlled active diodes. To improve the rectifier input voltage sensitivity and decrease the minimum operational input voltage, two low power common-gate comparators are introduced in the proposed design. To keep the comparator from oscillating, a positive feedback loop formed by the capacitor C is added to it. Based on the SMIC 0.18-μm standard CMOS process, the proposed rectifier is simulated and implemented. The area of the whole chip is 0.91×0.97 mm2, while the rectifier core occupies only 13% of this area. The measured results show that the proposed rectifier can operate properly with input amplitudes ranging from 0.2 to 1.0V and with frequencies ranging from 20 to 3000 Hz. The proposed rectifier can achieve a 92.5% power conversion efficiency (PCE) with input amplitudes equal to 0.6 V at 200 Hz. The voltage conversion efficiency (VCE) is around 93% for input amplitudes greater than 0.3 V and load resistances larger than 20kΩ.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of cryopreservation on dental pulp-derived stem cells (DPSC) viability over a period of three years. Dental pulp-derived stem cells were isolated and cultured from thirty-one healthy teeth. DPSC isolates were assessed for doubling-time and baseline viability prior to cryopreservation and were assessed again at three time points; one week (T1), 18 months (T2), and 36 months (T3). DPSC can be grouped based on their observed doubling times; slow (sDT), intermediate (iDT), and rapid (rDT). Viability results demonstrated all three types of DPSC isolates (sDT, iDT and rDT) exhibit time-dependent reductions in viability following cryopreservation, with the greatest reduction observed among sDT-DPSCs and the smallest observed among the rDT-DPSC isolates. Cryopreserved DPSCs demonstrate time-dependent reductions in cellular viability. Although reductions in viability were smallest at the initial time point (T1) and greatest at the final time point (T3), these changes were markedly different among DPSC isolates with similar doubling times (DTs). Furthermore, the analysis of various DPSC biomarkers - including both intracellular and cell surface markers, revealed differential mRNA expression. More specifically, the relative high expression of Sox-2 was only found only among the rDT isolates, which was associated with the smallest reduction in viability over time. The expression of Oct4 and NANOG were also higher among rDT isolates, however, expression was comparatively lower among the sDT isolates that had the highest reduction in cellular viability over the course of this study. These data may suggest that some biomarkers, including Sox-2, Oct4 and NANOG may have some potential for use as biomarkers that may be associated with either higher or lower cellular viability over long-term storage applications although more research will be needed to confirm these findings.

  • Based on some flaws occurred for implementing a public key cryptosystem in the embedded security device, many side-channel attacks to extract the secret private key have been tried. In spite of the fact that the cryptographic exponentiation is basically composed of a sequence of multiplications and squarings, a new Square Always exponentiation algorithm was recently presented as a countermeasure against side-channel attacks based on trading multiplications for squarings. In this paper, we propose Known Power Collision Analysis and modified Doubling attacks to break the Right-to-Left Square Always exponentiation algorithm which is known resistant to the existing side-channel attacks. And we also present a Collision-based Combined Attack which is a combinational method of fault attack and power collision analysis. Furthermore, we verify that the Square Always algorithm is vulnerable to the proposed side-channel attacks using computer simulation.

  • Objective: 'Cultured meat' has been suggested as means of solving the problems associated with overpopulation and gas emissions. Satellite cells are a major component in the production of cultured meat; however, these cells cannot be maintained in vitro over long periods. Fibronectin is a glycoprotein that affects biological processes such as cell adhesion, differentiation, and migration. Unfortunately, the characteristics of porcine satellite cells grown in a long-term culture when exposed to fibronectin-coated dishes are unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the appropriate concentration of fibronectin coated dishes for proliferation and maintenance of porcine satellite cells at long-term culture. Methods: In this study, we isolated the satellite cells and fibroblast cells with pre-plating method. We next analyzed the cell doubling time, cell cycle, and rate of expressed paired box 7 (Pax7) and myogenic differentiation 1 (MyoD1) in porcine satellite cells cultured with 20 ㎍/mL of fibronectin-, gelatin-, and non-coated dishes at early and late passage. We then analyzed the proliferation of porcine satellite cells with various concentrations of mixed gelatin/fibronectin. We next determined the optimal concentration of fibronectin that would encourage proliferation and maintenance of porcine satellite cells in a long-term culture. Results: Doubling time was lowest when 20 ㎍/mL of fibronectin was used (as tested during an early and late passage). Levels of expressed Pax7 and MyoD1, assessed using immunocytochemistry, were highest in cells grown using fibronectin-coated dishes. The proliferation of gelatin/fibronectin mixed coatings had no significant effect on porcine satellite cells. The concentration of 5 ㎍/mL fibronectin coated dishes showed the lowest doubling time and maintained expression of Pax7. Conclusion: Fibronectin with 5㎍/mL effectively maintains porcine satellite cells, a discovery that will be of interest to those developing the next generation of artificial meats.

  • This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of colchicine and oryzalin in inducing polyploidy in two Cymbidium hybrids [Showgirl 'Silky' and Mystery Island 'Silk Road' (Silk Road-4)]. Colchicine was used at concentrations ranging from 50 to $500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, with treatments lasting 1 to 3 weeks. Oryzalin was used at concentrations ranging from 3 to $20mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, with treatments lasting 3 to 6 days or 1 to 3 weeks. The survival rate of PLBs was better in colchicine than in oryzalin solutions. The ploidy levels were screened using flow cytometry. In C. Showgirl 'Silky', the highest chromosome doubling efficiencies were obtained with the 1-week treatment in $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ colchicine (60%) and the 2-week treatment in $5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ oryzalin (46.7%). In C. Mystery Island 'Silk Road' (Silk Road-4), the highest chromosome doubling efficiencies were obtained with the 1-week treatment in $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ colchicine (16.7%) and the 3-day treatment in $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ oryzalin (6.7%). Colchicine was more efficient than oryzalin in terms of polyploidy induction. Furthermore, pre-treatment, which entailed poking 10 times with forceps, improved the efficiency of chromosome doubling.

  • This paper proposed a high-speed voltage-controlled ring-oscillator(VCRO) using a frequency doubling technique. The design of the proposed oscillator has been based on TSMC 0.18um 1.8V CMOS technology. The frequency doubling technique is achieved by AND-OR operations with 4 signals which have $90^{\circ}$ phase difference one another in one cycle. The proposed technique has been implemented using a 4-stage differential oscillator compose of differential latched inverters and NAND gates for AND and OR operations. The differential ring-oscillator can generate 4 output signals, which are $90^{\circ}$ out-of-phase one another, with low phase noise. The ANP-OR operations needed in the proposed technique are implemented using NAND gates, which is more area-efficient and provides faster switching speed than using NOR gates. Simulation results show that the proposed, VCRO operates in the frequency range of 3.72 GHz to 8 GHz with power consumption of 4.7mW at 4GHz and phase noise of ~-86.79dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset. Therefore, the proposed oscillator demonstrates superior performance compared with previous high-speed voltage-controlled ring-oscillators and can be used to build high-performance frequency synthesizers and phase-locked loops for radio-frequency applications.
