Preparation of PVDF/PEI double-layer composite hollow fiber membranes for enhancing tensile strength of PVDF membranes

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane is widely used for water treatment. However, the weak mechanical strength of PVDF limits its application. To enhance its tensile strength, a double-layer composite hollow fiber membrane, with PVDF and polyetherimide as the external and inner layers, respectively, was successfully prepared through phase inversion technique. The effects of additive content, air gap distance, N,N-dimethyl-acetamide content in the inner core liquid, and the temperature of external coagulation bath on the membrane structure, permeation flux, rejection, tensile strength, and porosity were determined. Experimental results showed that the optimum preparation conditions for the double-layer composite hollow fiber membrane were as follows: PEG-400 and PEG-600, 5 wt%; air gap distance, 10 cm; inner core liquid and the external coagulation bath should be water; and temperature of the external coagulation bath, 40 C. A single layer PVDF hollow fiber membrane (without PEI layer) was also prepared under optimum conditions. The double-layer composite membrane remarkably improved the tensile strength compared with the single-layer PVDF hollow fiber membrane. The permeation flux, rejection, and porosity were also slightly enhanced. High-tensile strength hollow fiber PVDF ultrafiltration membrane can be fabricated using the proposed technique.

  • Ideal rotator cuff repair is to maintain high fixation strength and minimize gap formation for optimizing the environment of biologic healing of tendon to bone. Among the current repair techniques, the suture bridge technique is superior to single- or double-row repair in ultimate load to failure, gap formation, restoring anatomical footprint and achieving pressurized contact area. The suture bridge technique also minimizes gap formation and has rotational and torsional resistances allowing early rehabilitation. However, despite superior biomechanical characteristics of the suture bridge technique, there is no evidence that these mechanical advantages result in better clinical outcomes. Furthermore, there is no difference in failure rates between the double-row repair and suture bridge techniques. An appropriate repair technique should be determined based on tear size and pattern and tendon quality.

A Proposal of Two Signals Roundabout Analysis Method Using SIDRA6 (SIDRA6를 이용한 Two Signals Roundabout 분석방법 제안)

  • Roundabouts face a congestion problem when there are unbalanced traffic conditions, especially during peak times. The congestion at roundabouts results in long delay times and low level of service. Some research has addressed congestion problems of the metering roundabout, however, few studies have focused on the congestion issues of the double signals metering roundabout. This research bridges this gap through analyzing the congestion issues of the Old Belair double signals roundabout in Adelaide. The research proposes a new analysis method based on a four-nodes intersection in order for double signals roundabout analysis to be carried out as follows: firstly, at the modeling stage, a connection of four individual intersections, adjustment of lane geometry, input of directional traffic volumes, priority and phase time set up are proposed. Secondly, for calibration, PFF, critical gap, follow-up headway and extra bunching values have been applied. The results from the analysis show that the new method is able to analyze the delay time, level of service, degree of saturation and allow for further analysis.

Semantic Structure of Double Nominative Constructions (이중주격구문의 의미구조)

  • This paper provides a semantic account of double nominative constructions in the framework of Autolexical Grammar, which views syntax, semantics, morphology, and other language components as modules generated simultaneously and independently. Some syntactocentric models in the past analyzed double nominatives as a result of possessor raising, ECM or incorporation. This paper provides a semantic explication of double nominatives through function-argument (F/A) structure of internal possession and external possession. The possessum used in double nominatives is a relational noun which takes a possessor as its argument in F/A structure. If the possessor directly combines with the relational noun, then internal possession is generated. If the possessor is a gap in F/A structure, then the argument which is coreferential with the gap combines later with the predicate, resulting in external possession, in which the possessor is in the nominative case. Unlike internal possession, the F/A structure of external possession structurally shows that the sentence is predicated of the possessor.

Measurement of Thermal Deformation of a Double Ring Structure using Digital Image Correlation Technique (디지털 영상 보정 기법을 이용한 이중 링 구조물의 열변형 측정)

  • In this paper, thermal deformation of a double ring structure using digital image correlation technique (DIC) was measured. The double ring structure consisted of two parts; the inner ring was aluminium which had a large thermal expansion coefficient and the outer ring was titanium which had a small thermal expansion coefficient. We heated the double ring structure from $50^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$ in a chamber and at the same time, two cameras captured surface images of the double ring structure. Initially, there was a 21 ${\mu}m$ gap between the inner ring and outer ring. The gap was closed at around $80^{\circ}C$ and after that, two rings expanded together. In order to compare the experimental results with analysis results, a finite element analysis was performed using ANSYS. The results of DIC measurement and ANSYS analysis were compared and agreed well.

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay and Light Sterile Neutrino

  • The recent neutrino experiment results show a preference on normal mass ordering of neutrinos. The global efforts to search for neutrinoless double beta decays undergo a broad gap with the approach to the prediction in three-neutrino framework based on the normal ordering. Current research is to show that it is possible to find a neutrinoless double beta decay signal even with normal ordered neutrino masses. We propose the existence of light sterile neutrino as a solution to the higher effective mass of electron neutrino expected by experiments under operation. A few short-baseline oscillation experiments gave rise to exclusion bound to the mass of sterile neutrino and its mixing with the lightest neutrino. It is demonstrated that results of neutrinoless double beta decays can also narrow down the ranges of the mass and the mixing angle of sterile neutrino.

  • We fabricated highly stable a-Si:H solar cell using low band gap intrinsic layer fabricated by RP-CVD. We obtained a-Si:H with optical band gap of less than 1.65 eV with deposition rate of 0.18 $\AA$/sec, and used this material as bottom i-layer of a-Si:H double stacked solar cells. We have succeeded in the fabrication of very stable a-Si:H double stacked solar cell of which the conversion efficiency is about 9% and the degradation is less than 4% after light illumination for 100h under 350mW/cm$^{2}$.

  • Double-side linear pulse motor(DSLPM) has more advantages than single-side linear pulse motor because noise and vibration can be considerably decreased by countervailing the normal forces, which is generated between two stators and mover. However, DSLPM has more complicated magnetic flux path and layout of stator pole toot/mover tooth rather than single-side linear pulse motor In this paper, DSLPM is designed and fabricated by considering the air gap magnetic density, shape of tooth and slot. In order to verify the characteristics of DSLPM, the air gap magnetic flux density is analyzed by 2D FEM and the magnetic flux path is analyzed by 3D FEM. Also the static thrust forces is obtained with the analyzed results.

  • A design-oriented method for analysis of the structural damage due to ship collisions is developed by using the idealized structural unit method(ISUM). The method takes into account yielding, crushing, rupture, the coupling effects between local and global failure of the structure, the influence of strain-rate sensitivity and the gap/contact conditions. The method is verified by a comparison of experimetal and numerical results obtained from test models of double-skin plated structures in collision/grounding situations with the present solutions. As an illustrative example, the method has been used for analyses of a side collision of a double-hull tanker. Several factors affecting ship collision response. namely the collision speed and the scantlings/arrangements of strength members, are discussed.

Study on Enhancement of Magnetic Contact Forces between Iron Bed and Back Yoke in Electric Motor (대형 전동기에서의 영구자석 철 받침대와 요크 간의 전자기 결합력 향상에 관한 연구)

  • The shape of a iron bed supporting a permanent magnet in a large-sized motor is a important factor for determining the coupling strength with the yoke. In a large-sized motor, there is a difference in electromagnetic force with the yoke depending on the shape of the iron bed. In this paper, we show the differences and problems by calculating the electromagnetic force between the double bed and the single bed through the virtual air gap, and show that the single bed is superior in terms of the binding force. It is also shown that the binding force between the bed and the yoke is improved by carving the groove shape under the bed.
