In the water purification plant, chemicals are injected for quick purification of raw water. It is clear that the amount of chemicals intrinsically depends on water quality such as turbidity, temperature, pH and alkalinity. However, the process of chemical reaction to improve water quality (e.g., turbidity) by chemicals is not yet fully clarified nor quantified. The feedback signal in the process of coagulant dosage, which should be measured (through the sensor of the plant) to compute the appropriate amount of chemicals, is also not available. Most traditional methods focus on judging the conditions of purifying reaction and determine the amounts of chemicals through manual operation of field experts using Jar-test data. In this paper, a systematic control strategy is proposed to derive the optimum dosage of coagulant, PAC(Polymerized Aluminium Chloride), using Jar-test results. A neural network model is developed for coagulant dosing and purifying process by means of six input variables (turbidity, temperature, pH, alkalinity of raw water, PAC feed rate, turbidity in flocculation) and one output variable, while considering the relationships to the reaction of coagulation and flocculation. The model is utilized to derive the optimum coagulant dosage (in the sense of minimizing turbidity of water in flocculator). The ability of the proposed control scheme validated through the field test has proved to be of considerable practical value.
The quantity of residuals generated from water treatment plants depends upon the raw water quality, dosage of chemicals used, performance of the treatment process, method of sludge removal, efficiency of sedimentation, and backwashing frequency. Sludge production by the physical separation of SS occurs under quiescent conditions in the primary clarifier, where suspended solids are allowed to settle and to consolidate on the clarifier bottom. Raw primary sludge results when the settled solids are hydraulically removed from the tank. The relative solid and liquid fractions of a slurry are most commonly described by the solids concentration, expressed as mg/L or percent solids. The purpose of the present investigation is to estimate a suitability on the design capacities of residuals treatment facilities by the quantity of dewatered sludge generated from water treatment plants.
In the water purification plant, the raw water is promptly purified by injecting chemicals. The amount of chemicals is directly related to water quality such as turbidity, temperature, pH and alkalinity. At present, however, the process of chemical reaction to the turbidity has not been clarified as yet. Since the process of coagulant dosage has no feedback signal, the amount of chemical can not be calculated from water quality data which were sensed from the plant. Accordingly, it has to be judged and determined by Jar-Test data which were made by skilled operators. In this paper, it is concerned to model and control the coagulant dosing process using jar-test results in order to predict optimum dosage of coagulant, PAC(Polymerized Aluminium Chloride). The considering relations to the reaction of coagulation and flocculation, the five independent variables(turbidity, temperature, pH, Alkalinity of the raw water, PAC feed rate) are selected out and they are put into calculation to develope a neural network model and a fuzzy model for coagulant dosing process in water purification system. These model are utilized to predict optimum coagulant dosage which can minimize the water turbidity in flocculator. The efficacy of the proposed control schemes was examined by the field test.
As recently raw water quality has been polluted as well as its quality has been remarkably varied according to season and region, the precise control of coagulant dosage is being keenly required in water treatment plants. The amount of coagulant is closely related to raw water quality such as turbidity, alkalinity, water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, etc. Since the optimum quantity of chemicals is not yet finalized, so dosage rate must be decided by using jar test that takes one or two hours. Hereupon, the output signal of stream current and multi-regression on historical data were proposed to be applied to the coagulant dosing control. In consequence of applying the scheme to automatic determination of the dosage rate, it was testified that the determination of dosage rate was very effective in case it is performed as to real-time sensing of water quality and the output signal of stream current.

Objectives: We investigated the genotoxicity of two chemicals, methyl formate and 2-methylbutane, using male ICR mice bone marrow cells for the screening of micronucleus induction. Although these two chemicals have already been tested numerous times, a micronucleus test has not been conducted and the amounts used have recently been increased. Methods: 7 week male ICR mice were tested at dosages of 250, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg for methyl formate and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mg/kg for 2-methlybutane, respectively. After 24 hours of oral administration with the two chemicals, the mice were sacrificed and their bone marrow cells were prepared for smearing slides. Results: As a result of counting the micronucleated polychromatic erythrocyte (MNPCE) of 2,000 polychromatic erythrocytes, all treated groups expressed no statistically significant increase of MNPCE compared to the negative control group. There were no clinical signs related with the oral exposure of these two chemicals. Conclusion: It was concluded that the two chemicals did not induce micronucleus in the bone marrow cells of ICR mice, and there was no direct proportion with dosage. These results indicate that the two chemicals have no mutagenic potential under each study condition.
To classify the chemical hazard according to globally harmonized system of classification and labeling of chemicals (GHS), we investigated the genotoxicity of three chemicals, methyl myristate, 2-ethylhexanoic acid zinc salt, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine, using male ICR mice bone marrow cells for the screening of micronucleus induction. Although these three chemicals have already been tested numerous times, a micronucleus test has not been conducted. The seven week-old male ICR mice were tested at three dosages for the three chemicals, respectively. After 24 h of oral administration with the three chemicals, the mice were sacrificed and their bone marrow cells were prepared for smearing slides. As a result of counting the micronucleated polychromatic erythrocyte (MNPCE) of 2,000 polychromatic erythrocytes, all treated groups expressed no statistically significant increase of MNPCE compared to the negative control group. There were no clinical signs related with the oral exposure of these three chemicals. It was concluded that these three chemicals did not induce micronucleus in the bone marrow cells of ICR mice, and there was no direct proportion with dosage. These results indicate that the three chemicals have no mutagenic potential under each test condition, and it is not classified these chemicals as mutagens by GHS.

Most traditional methods focus on judging the conditions of purifying reaction and determine the amounts of chemicals through manual operation of field experts or jar-test results. This paper presents the method of deriving the optimum dosing rate of coagulant, PAC(Polymerized Aluminium Chloride) for coagulant dosing process in water purification system. A neural network model is developed for coagulant dosing and purifying process. The optimum coagulant dosing rate can be derived the neural network model. Conventionally, four input variables (turbidity, temperature, pH, alkalinity of raw water) are known to be related to the process, while considering the relationships to the reaction of coagulation and flocculation. Also, the turbidity in flocculator is regarded as a new input variable. And the genetic algorithm is utilized to identify the neural network structure. The ability of the proposed scheme validated through the field test is proved to be of considerable practical value.
This study was done to find chemicals adequate to control alkalinity and hardness in order to reduce dissolved phosphorus in water bodies like rivers and lakes. Five chemicals were selected for the study: calcite, lime, dolomite, magnesite, and gypsum. Data were obtained from the calculations with MINTEQ model as a function of dosage variations of each chemical. Findings are as follows: Three out of the five chemicals are found to be effective in reducing the dissolved phosphorus, i.e., calcite, lime, and dolomite. Calcite and dolomite are able to lower the phosphorus concentration up to one thousandth fold whereas lime does one hundred thousandths fold. In viewpoint of pH variation, both calcite and dolomite seem to be safe since the pH does not increase over 8.3 even in case of overdose. In the same circumstance, with lime the pH increases beyond 9 which is considered to be the highest pH level for the protection of water ecosystem. Nevertheless it is recommendable to use lime in case where there are some difficulties in water quality control due to algae blooms.
Agromonia pilosa L. has been used as a medicinal plant in traditional folk remedy, and it shows increasing tendency at various sections such as medicine-making material, functional food, and agricultural chemicals using plant or extract. Dosage effect of extract from Agrimonia pilosa L. plant on rat performance experiments were summarized as follows : Body weight was increased with 0.02% dosage treated-rat by 5% as compared to non-treated one, however, decreasing tendency was observed with 0.04% extract of Agrimonia pilosa L. plant fed rat to control Considering feed efficiency was similar result between extract dosage with 0.02% and non-treated rat. The number of leucocyte was increased by dosage-treated level except 0.02% dosage-treated rat. Number of erythrocyte was increased with 0.06% extract dosage-treated rat by 20% as compared to non-treated one.
Fluoridation of drinking water to a level of about 0.8mg/l (below 1.5mg/l) for reducing the incidence of tooth decay is recommended. However, concerns about potential problems of unknown effects and overdosing hinders the fluoridation. This study describes the work performed to obtain information on the behavior of fluoride under various conditions in the process of water fluoridation. Effects of water treatment chemicals, water treatment unit, and water distribution on water fluoridation were investigated at both lab and an actual water treatment plant. Residual fluoride concentration was not affected by lime and chlorine dosage up to 20mg/l. Flocculation with PAC slightly decreased the residual fluoride concentration as PAC dosage increased. Average fluoride concentration of 0.87mg/l at an intake basin was decreased to 0.83mg/l by sedimentation, 0.81mg/l by dual media(sand+anthracite) filtration, and 0.79mg/l by granular activated carbon filtration in the water treatment plant.
