  • The permeation characteristics of the wastewater containing Si fine particles were examined by ultrafiltration using the polyolefin tubular membrane module. Flux with time was due to the growth of Si cake deposited on the membrane surface and the pore plugging by fine particles. The rate of flux decline in the initial stage increased with the trans-membrane pressure. The pore blocking resistance was the dominant resistance at the initial period of filtration and the cake resistance began to dominate with the initial pore blocking resistance. The larger pores compared with the fine particles, the more the membrane pores could be blocked by the fine particles. Before and after treatment, the distribution of particle size was shifted toward to the left. Then, the average size of fine particles in the permeate was 20 nm.

  • Soil samples were collected in thirteen Manitoba boreal forest sites. Spatial distribution of chytrids from diverse boreal forest microhabitats was investigated by baiting with jack pine pollen. After baiting, the pollen was surveyed for chytrids for 8 ten day period and individual species were counted. Total infestations of pollen by chytrids ranged from 5.8% to 90.2% from various soils. Each site with high infestation was characterized by litter with high needle content while mineral soil or soil with limited organic matter yielded low levels of pollen infestation. Species diversity tended to be higher in soils with higher pollen infestation and lower in soils with lower pollen infestation. Lower diversity was generally observed in mineral soils or soils with a limited organic horizon comprised, in part, of broad leaf litter. Based on coefficients of association and species in common among species across the collection sites, it was possible to relate dominant species assemblages in site groups. These species assemblages in the site groups suggest that the chytrids are distributed by litter and soil types. It can be concluded that the substratum characteristics of litter types and availability of litter may be important in describing chytrid distribution in boreal forest sites.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze their status of underground storage tank(UST) facilities and level of soil contamination, and to establish its management criteria. DB program was developed to analyze the correlation between specific characteristic of UST and level of soil contamination. For a suitable management of UST, leakage monitoring and inspection method of UST was investigated. Inspection period was established based on the leakage rate. The most dominant factor for leakage seemed to be caused by the corrosion. Therefore, main factor, construction method and installation year of UST, and corrosion protection system were suggested for optimal protection of UST. Considering the present management status of UST in Korea, inspection and management criteria of UST should be accomplished in term of contamination protection of leakage, and flexible regulation act should be introduced for each specific site.

  • The ultrafiltration behavior of dilute colloidal solution containing Si particles has been investigated. The experiments in cross flow mode have been performed at different operating condition by using the membrane with 20 kDa cut-off. The flux decline was due to the development of membrane fouling which was a dynamic process of two distinctive stages. For the high trans-membrane pressure, the pore blocking resistance was dominant at the initial period of filtraion and was followed by the cake resistance. And for the low cross flow velocity, the membrane fouling was governed by the cake filtration model at the initial stage of filtration process. Flux jump was observed temporally during the membrane filtration of mixed feed solution.

  • A study of Han River fish assemblage dynamics for 4 years was conducted. From April 2005 to August, 2008, fishes inhabiting two sites of Han River were sampled for identification. For further analysis, 40 individuals of the dominant species were sampled monthly from March 2006 to November 2008. The fish assemblage at site 1 was dominated by Zacco platypus (32.69%), while the subdominant species were Acheilognathus yamatsutae (14.4%), Acanthorhodeus gracilis (9.43%), Squalidus japonicus coreanus (6.84%), and Tridentiger brevispinis (5.18%). The most abundant species at site 2 was Korean Chub (Zacco koreanus) with relative abundance of 62.45% and followed by Pungtungia herzi (10.29%), Coreoperca herzi (8.67%), and Coreoleuciscus splendidus (6.82%) as the subdominant species. At both sites, the endemics populations show an increasing pattern during the whole survey period, while the natives were declining in the last two years.

  • A study on the seasonal changes of the benthic macroinvertebrate community was performed on the intertidal rocky shores ao eastern coast of Cheju island and U-do throughout four seasons from october 1991 to August 1992. The macroinvertebrates were composed of 10 phyla, 18 classes, 39 orders, 94 families and 201 species. the number of speecies were 183 in summer, 147 in autumn, 138 in spring and 94 in winter, respectively. The total wpecies collected throuhout the study period were 193 species in U-do and 151 species in the eastern coast of Cheju Island. Nodilittorina exigua was the most dominant species in all seasons, followed by Monodonta neritoides in spring, autumn and winter, and pollicipes mitella in summer. U-do was higher in species diversity and richness and lower in evenness than the eastern coast. Species diversity and richness were higher in summer than any other seasons in lower intertidal zones. Community dominance indices, however, were significantly higher in upper intertidal zones than in lower intertidal zones.

  • Trawl fishing is a major concern worldwide, and there is considerable debate about its impact on marine ecosystems. In this study, we used the vessel monitoring system (VMS) data collected in the southwest Atlantic Ocean from 2016 to 2019 to estimate the fishing effort and trawled area. Spatial distribution of trawl activities according to the latitude and longitude and the hotspots where fishing was concentrated each year were identified. Trawling activities of the Korean vessels were mainly distributed between 40-52°S and 56-63°W. The species caught during the fishing period comprised five Cephalopoda, three Chondrichthyes, ten Osteichthyes, and other fish. The Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and Argentine shortfin squid Illex argentinus were the dominant species in the catch.

  • Pax Sinica is a historiographical term, modeled after the original phrase Pax Romana. It refers, in Latin, to a Chinese-provided peace which in turn is used to describe an era of peace in East Asia sustained by Chinese hegemony. In historical terms, both the Pax Sinica of the Eastern hemisphere through Han China and the Pax Romana of the Western hemisphere through Rome signified a trans-regional order based on rules and regulations. This orderly world of the Pax Sinica generated a number of positive results such as the intensification of travel, ever-expanding trade relations, an increase in the overall living standards of the populace, the proliferation of cities, and a demographic upsurge in Eurasia along the ancient Silk Road. During this period, China was the dominant civilization not only in the Eastern hemisphere but also in the Middle hemisphere due to its political, economic, military and cultural influence. This paper aims to reintroduce this historiographical term to elucidate the recent Chinese initiatives in Eurasia along the Silk Road to facilitate the integration and connectivity of the continent.

  • Data for fish species composition and the catch of fish species were obtained from the daily trading records for the period between April and December 2016 to 2018 at the set net fishing grounds in Yeosu Bay, Korea. The annual mean total catch was 195.8 tons, and the dominant species was the Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius), which accounts for about 55 percent of the total catch. The catch increased in spring and autumn. Increase in spring is caused by not Spanish mackerel but other fish while the increase in autumn by Spanish mackerel. The distinct increase of the catch in summer, 2017 was due to the new recruitment of small-sized Spanish mackerel, which was probably to be from the fish population hatched in spring in the East China Sea. Our results showed a strong correlation between water temperature and catch fluctuation. The catch increases with the increase in water temperatures, and the periodic pattern of the water temperature and catch fluctuation is more consistent in the offshore waters, in which warm current flows, than in the coast waters.

  • Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a global pandemic for over 2 years. During the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant-predominant period in South Korea, confirmed cases among children and adolescents surged. This review found that, although younger children may be less susceptible to COVID-19 than adolescents, more research is needed on the role of children and adolescents in the disease's spread. Detailed epidemiological information about the transmissibility of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strain in children and adolescents is currently scarce, and more research is needed on the role of children and adolescents in disease's spread. There may be a difference in the proportion of cases with severe disease requiring hospitalization depending on the dominant mutant strain; however, COVID-19 generally presents with a mild-to-moderate course in children aged 5-11 years old.
