  • In this paper, applications of wavelet neural network controller to position control of nonlinear system are considered. Wavelet neural network is used in the objectives which improve the efficiency of LQR controllers. It is possible to make unstable nonlinear systems stable by using LQR(Linear Quadratic Regulator) technique. And, in order to be adapted to disturbance effectively in this system it uses wavelet neural network controller. Applying this method to the position control of nonlinear system, its usefulness is verified from the results of experiment.

  • In this paper, an intelligent force control technique is applied to an autonomous helicopter. Although most research on the autonomous helicopter system is about navigation and control, force control of an autonomous helicopter system is quite new and not presented yet. After controlling the position of the helicopter by the LQR method, force control is applied. The adaptive impedance force control algorithm is introduced and tested to regulate the desired force under unknown location and stiffness of the environment. To compensate for uncertainty from outer disturbance, a neural network is added to form an intelligent force control framework. Simulation studies show that the proposed force control algorithm works well.

  • A hybrid kernel function of support vector machine is proposed to improve the classification performance of power quality disturbances. The kernel function mathematical model of support vector machine directly affects the classification performance. Different types of kernel functions have different generalization ability and learning ability. The single kernel function cannot have better ability both in learning and generalization. To overcome this problem, we propose a hybrid kernel function that is composed of two single kernel functions to improve both the ability in generation and learning. In simulations, we respectively used the single and multiple power quality disturbances to test classification performance of support vector machine algorithm with the proposed hybrid kernel function. Compared with other support vector machine algorithms, the improved support vector machine algorithm has better performance for the classification of power quality signals with single and multiple disturbances.

  • In this paper, an improved one-against-one support vector machine algorithm is used to classify multiple power quality disturbances. To solve the problem of parameter selection, an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to optimize the parameters of the support vector machine. By proposing a new inertia weight expression, the particle swarm optimization algorithm can effectively conduct a global search at the outset and effectively search locally later in a study, which improves the overall classification accuracy. The experimental results show that the improved particle swarm optimization method is more accurate than a grid search algorithm optimization and other improved particle swarm optimizations with regard to its classification of multiple power quality disturbances. Furthermore, the number of support vectors is reduced.

  • There is a gradual increase in the need for energy charging in marine environments because of energy limitations experienced by electric ships and marine robots. Buoys are considered potential energy charging systems, but there are several challenges, which include the need to maintain a fixed position and avoid hazards, dock with ships and robots in order to charge them, be robust to actions by birds, ships, and robots. To solve these problems, this study proposes a smart buoy robot that has multiple thrusters, multiple docking and charging parts, a bird spike, a radar reflector, a light, a camera, and an anchor, and its mechanism is developed. To verify the performance of the smart buoy robot, the position control under disturbance due to wave currents and functional tests such as docking, charging, lighting, and anchoring are performed. Experimental results show that the smart buoy robot can operate under disturbances and is functionally effective. Therefore, the smart buoy robot is suitable as an energy charging system and has potential in realistic applications.

  • Since the welding process is complex and highly nonlinear, it is very difficult to accurately model the process for real-time control. In this paper, a discrete-time transfer function matrix model for gas metal arc welding process is proposed. Although this linearized model is valid only around the operating point of interest, the adaptation mechanism employed in the control system render this model useful over a wide operating range. A multivariable one-step-ahead adaptive control strategy combined with a recursive least-squares method for on-line parameter estimation is implemented in order to achieve the desired weld bead geometries. Command following and disturbance rejection properties of the adaptive control system for both SISO and MIMO cases are investigated by simulation and experiment.

  • To improve the reliability of control systems, certain robustness to plant uncertainties and disturbance inputs is required in terms of well founded mathematical basis. Robust control theory was set up and developed until now from this motivation. In this field, H$_2$or H\ulcorner norm performance measures are frequently used nowadays. Moreover a mixed H$_2$/H\ulcorner control problem is introduced to combine the merits of each measure since H$_2$control usually makes more sense for performance while H\ulcorner control is better for robustness to plant perturbations. However only some partial analytic solutions are developed to this problem under certain special cases at this time. In this paper, the mixed H$_2$/H\ulcorner control problem is considered. The analytic(or semi-analytic) solutions of (sub)optimal mixed H$_2$/H\ulcorner state-feedback controller are derived for the scalar plant case and the multivariable plant case, respectively. An illustrative example is given to compare the proposed analytic solution with the existing numerical one.

  • In this paper, we have studied wireless time division duplex(TDD) time synchronization technique considering the propagation delay between mobile vehicles. The existing IEEE 1588 precision time protocol(IEEE 1588 PTP) algorithm was applied and the time synchronization between the two nodes was achieved through the propagation delay and clock offset time correction calculated between master slave nodes during wireless TDD communication. The time synchronization process and procedure of IEEE 1588 PTP algorithm were optimized, thereby reducing the propagation delay error sensitivity for real-time moving vehicles. The sync flag signal generated through the time correction has a time synchronization accuracy of max +252.5 ns within 1-symbol(1.74 M symbol/sec, ${\pm}287.35ns$) through test and measurement, and it was confirmed that the time synchronization between master slave nodes can be achieved through sync flag signal generated during GPS disturbance.

  • Planing hull type ships are often equipped with interceptor or trim tab to improve the excessive trim angle which leads to poor resistance and sea keeping performances. The purpose of this study is to design a controller to control the attitude of the ship by controllable stern interceptor and validate the effectiveness of the attitude control by the towing tank test. Embedded controller, servo motor and controllable stern interceptor system were equipped with planing hull type model ship. Prior to designing the control algorithm, a model test was performed to identify the system dynamic model of the planing hull type ship including the stern interceptor. The matrix components of model were optimized by Genetic Algorithm. Using the identified model, PID controller which is a classical controller and sliding mode controller which is a nonlinear robust controller were designed. Gain tuning of the controllers and running simulation was conducted before the towing tank test. Inserting the designed control algorithm into the embedded controller of the model ship, the effectiveness of the active control of the stern interceptor was validated by towing tank test. In still water test with small disturbance, the sliding mode controller showed better performance of canceling the disturbance and the steady-state control performance than the PID controller.

  • In this study, a concept of active sound enrichment (ASE) control system was implemented and demonstrated for improving engine sound quality inside the cabin of a passenger car during acceleration. Unlike the active noise control cancels the noise for disturbance rejection, the ASE adds additional sound to the noise for tracking control. This approach requires a new algorithm to provide additional artificial sound to the original engine sound using active control strategy to achieve a target sound profile, which is predefined to satisfy required interior sound quality. The ASE algorithm was implemented in a digital controller dSPACE DS1401 and real-time control experiment was accomplished in an actual car. The ASE control results show that the actively enriched sound of each engine order against RPM tracks the target profiles precisely and quickly and improves the discontinuity, the level ratios and the sound pressure level of each engine order. Thus it is anticipated the ASE system can be applied for the improvement of the engine sound quality inside the cabin during acceleration.
