  • AVO and complex trace analyses mainly used to characterize natural gas reservoir were tested in this paper for a possible application to detection of major geological discontinuities such as fracture zones. The test data used in this study were calculated by utilizing a viscoelastic numerical program which was based on the generalized Maxwell body for a horizontal fracture model. In AVO analysis of a horizontal fracture zone, p-wave reflection appears to be variant depending upon the acoustic-impedence contrast and the offset distance. The fracture zone is also effectively clarified both in gradient stack and range-limited stack in which fracture zone reflection is attenuated with the increasing offset distance. In complex attribute plots (instantaneous amplitude, frequency, and phase), the top and bottom of the fracture Tone are characterized by a zone of strong amplitudes and an event of the same phase. Low frequency characteristics appear at the fracture zone and the underneath. Amplitude attenuation and waveform dispersion are dependent on Q-contrast between the fracture zone and the surrounding media. They were properly compensated by optimum inverse Q-filtering.

  • This paper presented design for a dipole antenna operated at 900 MHz band RFID tag, and antenna performance varied by the sticked material was experimentally evaluated. When dipole antenna was sticked by the material having a difffrent electric characteristic such as dielectric material, fero-magnetic material and conductor, variations of antenna return loss and radiation pattern according to the sticked material kinds, size, and height between antenna and the sticked plate were experimentally observed and evaluated. When antenna was sticked by dielectric surface, the measured return loss and radiation pattern by affection of different dielectric permittivity ratio showed resonant frequency shift of about 40 MHz and relative attenuation of 1 dB to 3 dB. Even though frequency shift by size variation of the sticked plate was observed, the measured radiation pattern of dipole antenna located on the sticked plate was similar with one without backside plate. In the case of conductor or fero-magnetic material as the sticked ground plate, because of frequency shift and phase difference by distance between dipole antenna and the sticked ground plate, amplitude decrease of radiation pattern at 910 MHz was observed about 5 dB above.

  • A comprehensive set of dosimetric measurements has been made on the Varian Clinac 1800 15 MV photon beam. Beam quality, percentage depth dose, dose in the build up region, output, symmetry and flatness, transmission through iead (Cerrobend), tray attenuation, isodose curves for the open and wedged fields were measured using 3 dimensional water phantom dosimetry system (including film densitometer system) and polystyrene phantoms. These dosimetric measurements sufficiently characterized the beam to permit clinical use. The depth dose characteristics of photon beam is $d_{max}$ of 3.0 cm and percentage depth dose of $76.8\%$ at 10 cm,100 cm source-surface distance, field size of $10\times10\;cm^2$ for 15 MV X-ray beam. The Output factors ranged 0.927 for $4\times4\;cm^2$ field to 1,087 for $35\times35\;cm^2$ field. The build-up level of maximum dose was at 3.0 cm and surface dose was approximately $15.5\%$ for a field size $10\times10\;cm^2$ The stability of output is $within\pm1\%$ and flatness and symmetry are $within\pm3\%$. The half value thickness (HVL) of lead is 13 mm, which corresponds to an attenuation coefficient of $0.053\;mm^{-1}$. These figures compare facorably with the manufacturesr`s specifications.

  • The purposes of this report are to evaluate whether lead ball and steel ball could be used as protective material of radiation and to acquire physical data of them for protecting 4-10 MV X-ray beams. Lead balls of diameter 2.0~2.5mm or steel balls of diameter 1.5~2.0 mm were filled in an acrylic box of uniform width. An MV radiograph of metal balls in a box were taken to ascertain uniformity of ball distribution in the box. Average density of metal ball and linear attenuation coefficient of metal balls for 4~10 MV X -rays were measured. At the time of measurement of linear attenuation coefficient, Farmer ionization chamber was used and to minimize the scatter effect, distance between the ball and the ionization chamber was 70 cm and field size was 5.5cm${\times}$5.5cm. For comparison, same parameters of lead and steel plates were measured. The distribution of metal balls was uniform in the box. The density of a mixture of lead-air was 6.93g/cm$^3$, 0.611 times density of lead, and the density of a mixture of steel-air was 4.75g/cm$^3$, 0.604 times density of steel. Half-value layers of a mixture of lead-air were 1.89 cm for 4 MV X-ray, 2.07 cm for 6 MV X-ray and 2.16 cm for 10 MV X-ray, and approximately 1.64 times of HVL of lead plate. Half-value layers of a mixture of steel-air were 3.24 cm for 4 MV X-ray, 3.70 cm for 6 MV X-ray and 4.15 cm for 10 MV X-ray, and approximately 1.65 times of HVL of lead plate. Metal balls can be used because they could be distributed evenly. Average densities of mixtures of lead-air and steel-air were 6.93g/cm$^3$, 4.75g/cm$^3$ respectively and approximately 1.65 times of densities of lead and steel. Product of density and HVL for a mixture of metal-air are same as the metal.

  • An Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system is a technology that alerts people to an incoming earthquake by using P waves that are detected before the arrival of more severe seismic waves. P-wave analysis is therefore an important factor in the production of rapid seismic information as it can be used to quickly estimate the earthquake magnitude and epicenter through the amplitude and predominant period of the observed P-wave. However, when a large-magnitude teleseismic earthquake is observed in a local seismic network, the significantly attenuated P wave phases may be mischaracterized as belonging to a small-magnitude local earthquake in the initial analysis stage. Such a misanalysis may be sent to the public as a false alert, reducing the credibility of the EEW system and potentially causing economic losses for infrastructure and industrial facilities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop methods that reduce misanalysis. In this study, the possibility of seismic misclassifying teleseimic earthquakes as local events was reviewed using the Filter Bank method, which uses the attenuation characteristics of P waves to classify local and outside Korean peninsula (regional and teleseismic) events with filtered waveform depending on frequency and epicenter distance. The data used in our analysis were analyzed for maximum Pv values using 463 events with local magnitudes (2 < ML ≦ 3), 44 (3 < ML ≦ 4), 4 (4 < ML ≦ 5), 3 (ML > 5), and 89 outside Korean peninsula earthquakes recorded by the KMA seismic network. The results show that local and telesesimic earthquakes can be classified more accurately when combination of filtering bands of No. 3 (6-12 Hz) and No. 6 (0.75-1.5 Hz) is applied.

  • The noise and vibration generated by the subway rolling stocks operated along the Seoul Subway Line No.1, 2, 3, and 4 lead to a controversy of pollution problem especially in residential areas. However, there is no data or guide to define the damage or provide adequate protection against such pollutions. The field measurements were made to characterize the noise attenuation due to distance, noise level distribution around the subway track of the aboveground and underground parts of each Line. The assessment criteria and methods are considered in addition to the practical available noise control methods. The noise level measured at Line No. 1 and 3 are less than 60 dB(A) with no pollution problem. Only a part of the aboveground section of Line No.2 and 4 indicates severe noise pollution. The effective boundary of these areas exposed to 70dB (A) noise are within 50m from the track centerline of No.2 line and 25m of No.4 line. The residents file a strong complaints whenever the noise level exceeds the 80dB (A) , and an occasional complaints between 70 to 80 dB(A). The distribution of high level noise of 80 dB(A) occurs within 25m from the track centerline of the overbridge, 12.5m of the short steel bridge, and about loom of the long steel bridge such as Dangsan Bridge. The intermediate noise level of 70 to 80 dB(A) is recorded within 50m from the overbridge, U-type retaining structure, and short steel structure, and 280m from the long steel bridge. The results presented in this paper can be used to understand the characteristics of the noise pollution along the Seoul Subway now In operation, and used as a guide to improve the existing noise pollution problems.

  • The vertical response spectra using the observed ground motions from the recent more than 30 macro earthquakes were analysed and then were compared both to the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and to the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings (1997). 176 vertical ground motions, without considering soil types, were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that response spectrum had strong dependency on epicentral distance. The results also showed that the vertical response spectra revealed much higher values for frequency bands above 5~7 Hz than Reg. Guide (1.60). The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that the vertical response spectra revealed much higher values for the frequency bands below 0.2 second (5 Hz) than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum (SD soil condition). These frequency-dependent spectral values could be related to the characteristics of the domestic crustal attenuation and the effect of each site amplification. However, through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the conservation of vertical seismic design response spectrum should be considered more significantly for the frequency bands above 5 Hz.

  • Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) has installed and operated seven seismoacoustic (infrasound) arrays as well as seismic stations in Korea. The seismo-acoustic array, which consists of co-located seismometers and micro-barometers, can observe both seismic and infrasonic signals from distant explosive phenomena. The infrasound is defined as low frequency (<20 Hz) acoustic waves in atmosphere. In particular, it can be detectable at long distance due to its low energy attenuation during propagation in atmosphere. KIGAM adopted the infrasound technology to discriminate surface explosions from earthquakes only because the surface explosion generally generates infrasound following seismic signal. In addition to surface explosions, these arrays have detected diverse geophysically natural and artificial phenomena, such as infrasound signal from the North Korean nuclear test. This review introduced the state-of-the-art studies and examples of infrasonic signals in and around the Korean Peninsula. In conclusion, infrasound technology would be clearly accepted itself as a new Earth monitoring technology by expanding its detectable regime to lithosphere-Earth surface-atmosphere. In future, an advanced technology, which allows to analyze seismic and infrasonic wave fields together, will enlarge the understanding of geophysical phenomena and be used as a robust analysis method for remote explosive phenomena in the broad infrasound regime.

  • Ecological risk assessment(ERA) to 5 abandoned mine drainage was investigated by using chemical measurement and bioassay experiment. From the results of chemical analysis, the high concentration of heavy metals are detected in most area. The Arsenite were mostly detected in Songcheon, Nakdong, and Dukum abandoned mine area, and various heavy metals were highly dispersed in Nakdong area. The study area have also high biological toxicity, resulted from the bioassay based on WET(Whole Effluent Toxicity) test by using Vibrio fisheri, Selenastrum copricornutum, and Daphnia magna. The maximum toxicity was shown in the point where the mine waters start to flow. The sensitivity of toxicity by S. capricornutum was relatively high considering the values of toxicity in all samples, from 1.3 to 32.0 TU. The different sensitivities of toxicity recommends the use of battery system, resulted from at least two test species for bioassay or ecological risk assessment of mine drainage. Besides, the results showed high hazard quotient(i.e., greater than 1 HQ value indicating potentially significant toxic risks) with regard to abandoned mine drainage area in this study. On the other hand, the biological toxicity results were sharply decreased by attenuation along further distance from discharging of mine waters. Therefore, environmental parameters including the dilution factor, dissolved organic matter, and hardness should be considered when the remediation and ERA of abandoned mine drainage is planned.

  • Although the Dongjin Au-Ag-Cu mine had been abandoned since about forty years ago, the results of this study on the dispersion patterns and contamination level of heavy metals in the hydrologic system flowing via the waste rump show that the environmental impacts from the mine wastes are still significant. The stream water in the vicinity of the waste rump is severely acidified (pH 3.8 to 4.4) and highly enriched in various dissolved heavy metals. The heavy metal contents of the stream water and stream sediments are systematically attenuated with increasing distance from the mine area. However, it is worth to note that continuous attenuation of heavy metal contents in both media were reenriched in downstream area more than 800 m apart from the mine because it can be acted as a secondary source of heavy metal pollution. The heavy metals, especially Cd, Cu and Zn of polluted downstream sediments mainly occur in Fe-Mn oxides and organic materials, which indicates that these elements are the main pollutants from the waste rump of the Dongjin mine. The heavy metal contents of crops, such as sesame, perilla, red Pepper and brown rice, collected from the polluted farm land in the downstream area are lower than those of land plants from stream sides, but significantly higher in Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn than those from the unpolluted farm land. Especially, almost all of the crops in polluted farm land have been severly contaminated by Cd (>0.4 ppm). On the other hand, the heavy metal contents of the crops collected from refreshed farm land by means of a soil addition method shows significantly lowered level comparing with those of polluted area, which indicates that a soil addition method was effective for the refreshment of polluted farm land by toxic metallic pollutants. Wormwoods from this area showed very high contents in a11 the heavy metals even in unpolluted area (Cd > 1 ppm, Cr > 1 ppm, Cu > 11 ppm, Pb> 4 ppm, Zn > 55 ppm), indicating that a special caution must be payed when one takes ingest them.
