  • In contrast to paints, the surface appearance of adhesive materials is of minor importance, because the adhesive is invisible between the two substrates. Therefore, the rheological properties needed to apply an adhesive dispersion by spray coating can be quite different. The influence of three different kinds of thickeners on the spraying behaviour of polyurethane adhesive dispersions was investigated. The associative thickener showed only minor changes, whereas the higher molecular weight soluble thickeners dramatically changed the spraying angle and the amount of overspray. Determination of the elongational viscosity by means of the CaBER rheometer proved to be of limited use for thickened dispersions.

  • LCD color filters have been manufactured in a process called photolithography to date, but various printing methods have been studied currently in response to the trend of low-end LCD panels. Direct Printing Process is a suitable fabrication technique to develope pigment components whose dimensions are in nano. The success of this process depends on the systematic preparation of pigment millbase. Conventional millbase dispersions are constituted of the organic pigments, monomer, dispersant and solvents. An experimental study on the rheology of millbase dispersions is presented. Subsequently, this thesis attempts to find out the dispersive characteristics as well as the selection of pigments, monomers and dispersants in the part of millbase among the stages of manufacturing LCD color filters using the direct printing methods. The dispersive characteristics were shown through analytic devices such as PSA, Rheometer, etc.

  • CoQ with low melting temperature was exploited to improve its solubility by preparing its solid dispersions (SDs) with a meltable polymer, poloxamer 407 (P 407). P407 can be utilized for a relatively simple, quick, inexpensive, reproducible and potentially scalable manner in the low temperature melting method. CoQ 10 solubility and dissolution increased with increasing concentrations of P 407 in SDs. Comparison of the enhanced dissolution of CoQ 10 from different poloxamers suggested that the preparation of CoQ 10 SDs using P 407 as a meltable hydrophilic polymer carrier could be a promising approach to improve its dissolution.

  • Similarity and diversity of various quantum ring structures are investigated by classifying energy dispersions of three different structures: an electrostatic quantum ring, a magnetic quantum ring, and a magnetic-electric quantum ring. The wave functions and the eigenenergies of a single electron in the quantum ring structures are calculated by solving the Schrdinger equation without any electron-electron interaction. Magnetoconductance is studied by calculating a two-terminal conductance while taking into account the backscattering via the resonance through the states of the quantum rings at the center of a quasi-one dimensional conductor. It is found that the energy spectra for the various quantum ring structures are sensitive to additional electrostatic potentials as well as to the effects of a nonuniform magnetic field. There are also characteristics of similarity and diversity in the energy dispersions and in the single-channel magnetoconductance.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the adhesion in tension of polymer-modified mortars according to curing conditions. From the test results, the adhesion in tension is seriously affected by type of curing conditions compared with type of polymer dispersions or polymer-cement ratios. The maximum adhesion in tension of EVA-modified mortar with polymer-cement ratio of 20% cured by standard condition is about 1.81 times, the cement mortar cured in water. It is apparent that the adhesion in tension of polymer-modified mortars according to raising of polymer-cement ratio is also much more improved irrespective of type of polymer dispersions and curing conditions.

  • We perform numerical experiments on supernova-driven turbulent flows in order to see whether or not supernovae playa major role in driving turbulence in the interstellar medium. In a $(200pc)^3$ computational box, we set up, as initial conditions, uniformly magnetized gas distributions with different pairs of hydrogen number densities and magnetic field strengths, which cover the observed values in the Galactic midplane. We then explode supernovae at randomly chosen positions at a Galactic explosion rate and follow up the evolution of the supernova-driven turbulent flows by integrating numerically the ideal MHD equations with cooling and heating terms. From the numerical experiments we find that the density-weighted velocity dispersions of the flows are in the range of 5-10 km $s^{-l}$, which are consistent with the observed velocity dispersions of cold and warm neutral media. Additionally, we find that strong compressible flows driven by supernova explosions quickly change into solenoidal flows.

  • One-pack cross-linkable nanocomposites of waterborne methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO)-blocked aromatic polyurethane dispersion (BPUD) reinforced with organoclay (quaternary ammonium salt of Cloisite 25A) were synthesized by the acetone process using 4,4'-methylenedi-p-phenyl diisocyanate (MDl), poly(tetramethylene) glycol (PTMG), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), and methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO). Particle size, viscosity, and storage stability of these nanocomposites were investigated. TEM and XRD studies confirmed that the silicate layers of organophilic clay were exfoliated and intercalated at a nanometer-scale in the BPUD matrix.

  • Solid dispersion of fenticonazole nitrate (FN) with poloxamer 407, polyethylene glycol 6000, povidone (K-90) were prepared by the solvent method. To characterize the state of the drug in solid dispersions, the x-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry were carried out. The identification of these systems suggested that FN in the poloxamer 407 system remained in crystalline state, and the drug in the PVP system was amorphous. A marked increase in the dissolution rate of FN was attained by dispersing the drug in the hydrophilic polymers used, and the dispersion with poloxamer 407 was superior to the other two carriers in releasing the drug into solution.

  • The oxidation behavior of Ni-6wt.% Cr alloys with various concentration of alumina dispersions(5vol.% 10vol.%) was determined at 1000 and 110$0^{\circ}C$ in oxygen of 1 atm. pressure. Some general observations were ascertained. These include: (a) the addition of alumina dispersoids significantly increased the oxidation resistance of Ni-6wt.% Cr alloy; (b) the rate of oxidation was distinctly decreased as a function of the volume percent of oxide dispersion; and (c) the presence of alumina dispersions promoted the formation of continous, protective Cr2O3 layer at 6 wt.% Cr.

  • Physicochemical properties and gelatinization patterns of purple-fleshed sweet potato starch were studied. Shape of starch granule was round and polygonal, X-ray diffraction pattern was Ca-type. Amylose content was 14.4% which was lower than that of other sweet potato starch. Water binding capacity was 82.54%, swelling power and solubility at 8$0^{\circ}C$ were 27.94% and 15.35%, respectively. Initial temperature of gelatinization was 72$^{\circ}C$ using Brabender/Visco/Amylograph, consistency and setback were lower than those of other sweet potato starch. The peak temperature and enthalpy determined by DSC were 68.1$^{\circ}C$, 1.24cal/g, respectively. The transmittance of starch dispersions in alkaline solutions increased with NaOH concentration up to 0.17N, and then changed slowly at 0.19N or above. The apparent viscosities were similar to the transmittance of starch dispersions in alkaline solutions, but drastically increased above 0.21N.
