  • Objective: This study aimed to report the improvement of a patient with chronic insomnia who was treated with Baekho-tang based on the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS). Methods: The patient's symptoms were checked on days 19, 37, and 52 after taking Baekho-tang. Chronic insomnia was evaluated by the degree of insomnia, hours spent asleep, and the number of times the patient woke up during the night, which were all assessed by a visual analog scale (VAS) with the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire. In addition, new clinical implications for the interpretation of the 350th Shanghanlun provision were reviewed. Results: After administering Baekho-tang for 52 days, based on the 350th Shanghanlun provision according to the DPIDS, the VAS score decreased from 10 to 1. Conclusions: The patient recovered from chronic insomnia. This case report suggests that the words "滑," "厥," and "裏" in the 350th provision of Shanghanlun mean physical and psychological causes of insomnia. In addition, Baekho-tang had a therapeutic effect in improving the chief complaint of the patient. Therefore, the interpretation of the 350th Shanghanlun provision requires a new definition that includes the patient's lifestyle, family conflict, and past history of the patient as a cause of chronic insomnia.

  • Objective : This study aimed to report the improvement of a patient with anorexia by treatment with Jinmu-tang (Hyunmu-tang) based on the disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS) of the Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : We evaluated the progress of symptoms, patient compliance, and presence of side effects after the patient was administered Jinmu-tang. The clinical response was estimated according to the number of meals a day, the size of meals, the number of complaints of abdominal pain in a week, and a Likert scale. Results : According to the DPIDS, the patient was diagnosed according to provision 316 with soyinbing. After administration of Jinmu-tang for 45 days, the number of meals a day and the size of meals increased, the number of complaints of abdominal pain in a week decreased, and the Likert scale score decreased from 3 to 0. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the word "腹痛" (abdominal pain) in the 316th Shanghanlun provision indicates anxiety about abdominal pain, which affected anorexia in this case.

  • The lumbar disc is one of the first parts of the human body to age. Female discs start to age at twenty and completely age between fifty and sixty. The number of lumbar herniated intervertebral disc patients is increasing rapidly; however, studies on protective inner wear are insufficient. This study develops protective inner wear equipment for bodies. The following were the study methods and procedures. First, the protective design, pattern and making of the inner wear were based on the analysis of collected data. Second, one subject was selected, then human body parts were measured to create the inner protective pattern. The inner pattern was made by the basic size of the subject. The inner protective equipment was made for lumbar disc disease patients after a wearing test and after correcting the pattern. Third, inner protective equipment was thoroughly tested to verify the compatibility of lumbar pads. The following were the study results and observations. First, lumbar pads who had inner protection were easily worn and the design was very ladyish in contrast to other lumbar pads on the market. Second, the pattern was completed by referring to, Lee Hyoung Sook's, torso and her lumbar pad shape. The fabric was mesh (for good ventilation) and poly spandex (for elasticity). Third, lumbar inner protective equipment was verified through a subject assessment and a major assessment. This study showed high scores on appearance and functional satisfaction versus existing disc lumbar pads in the market. This study predicts that new waist protective inner wear can help the female patient's health and social life because it has great functionality and can maintain outer line patterns.

  • This paper is the sequel to 'A study on research methodology of the quoted verses in Dong-uisusebowon(1)'. In this paper, a more detailed discussion on the Shanghanlun lines quoted in the Dong-uisusebowon were carried out based on the aforementioned conclusion, using tao-ren-cheng-qi-tang(桃仁承氣湯) and di-dang-tang(抵當湯) lines related to the tip disease pattern of the So-eum constitution. First in the case of tao-ren-cheng-qi-tang lines, the treatment instructions tell us to use the formula after treating the tip, only when there are root symptoms left. However, in the Dong-uisusebowon, Lee instructed to use tao-ren-cheng-qi-tang when tip symptoms were present. Also, in the di-dang-tang lines, symptoms related to kuang (狂) and stiffening of the lower abdomen which are main manifestations of xu-xue(蓄血) pattern are modified from the Shanghanlun version. The reason behind the difference in contents between the Dong-uisusebowon and Shanghanlun in the mentioned lines is because the lines were already modified in the Dong-uibogam. Heo Jun modified the tao-ren-cheng-qi-tang lines to maintain coherence with the contents of di-dang-tang used in the xu-xue(蓄血) pattern. Another reason for Heo's modification of the di-dang-tang lines is to correct the incoherence of symptoms listed according to the difference in severity of the two di-dang-tang disease patterns. As we can see, Heo modified these parts in the Dong-uibogam based on logical reasons, which enabled Lee to avoid logical contradiction and suggest the So-eum tip disease pattern naturally, by referencing the lines as quoted in the Dong-uibogam.

  • The aim of this study was to suggest the future direction of diagnostic and evaluative pattern identification questionnaire (PIQ) by reviewing the state of development and utilization of PIQ according to Korean classification of disease-U (KCD-U). We surveyed the database of OASIS, NDSL, KISS, DBPIA, and Pub-med to know the kinds of developed and developing PIQ of Korean medicine. We used 'Pattern Identification' and 'Questionnaire' to find suitable papers. The inclusion criteria met 47 cases. The number of PIQ before 2000yrs, between 2001 to 2005, 2006-2010, 2011-2015 were 2, 5, 18, 22cases. The number of PIQ belonged to the disease of Korean medicine, the pathological symptom of korean medicine, the Sasang constitutional pattern identification and etc according to KCD-U were 20(42.6%), 8(17%), 9(19.1%) and 10(21.3%). Twenties among forty seven PIQ were validated, and the rest of them were not validated. The distribution of the numbers of PIQ were significantly different according to KCD-U (p=0.003). The direction of Utilization of PIQ was 36 questionnaires in diagnosing PI, 14 cases in evaluating health state, 4cases in evaluating effects of a treatment and 8 ones in diagnosing Sasang constitutional types. This study reveals the status on validated and non-validated PIQ of Korean medicine and suggests the basic information for the direction of developing PIQ in the future.

  • State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People's Republic of China lead Research on Chao medicine's Constitutional Treatment project by which could involve the following principles. First, constitution can be identified, second, constitution correlates to ones susceptibility to diseases, third, constitution can be harmonized, fourth, prescription made according to ones constitution and patterns. These ideas is originated by Lee Je-ma's theory of Four Constitution Type in "DongEuiSooSeBoWon"(Longetivity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine). This is much similar to currents trends of personalized medicine in western medical sciences. Therefore further developing Lee's theory would have significant value on various fields of medicine.

This study was carried out between May to Aug. in 1998 through direct interview in Rheumatism clinic at H. University Hospital and subject in this study were 125 outpatients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test, ANOVA using SPSS Window program. The results of this study are as follows. 1. General Characteristics : All of the persons with Fibromyalgia were female who were mostly in their forties(37.5%). A third of them(38.4%) were graduated from high school. The greatest part of them(54.4%) were christians but little part of them(16.8%) were employed 2. Disease Characteristics : They have struggled with Fibromyalgia for 10 years on an average. About half of them(56.9%) suffered from Fibromyalgia only but the others had another diseases which were in greatest part occupied by Osteoarthritis. The number of tender point which is a feature of Fibromyalgia differed according to measuring criteria. Yunus criteria. however, was proved to be the most proper measuring criteria than any other method as it showed high correlations between symptoms and physical activities. The most serious symptoms that complained the patients among subjective symptoms are pain, sleep disorder, and fatigue in sequence, and activities most hard to do among physical activities are washing by hand, scrubbing by hand, and shopping in sequence. 3. Behavior Pattern of Treatment : The largest part of them(42.4%) had received medical treatment after they were determined to have the disease and most of them were taking medicine as prescribed by physician(88.8%) or other medicines(16.8%), Of them, two thirds stated that the medicine they took were effective. Around a third of them took exercises mostly composed of swimming. The medical institution they visited in the past were orthopedic surgical department, Oriental hospital, physical therapy department in sequence and, in a slight percent(11.4%), psychiatric department. 4. Relations between Disease Characteristics and Behavior pattern of Treatment : It shows that number of tender point and level of symptom are significantly different according to duration of disease and medical intervention. As a results, it can be suggest that persons with Fibromyalgia need to take exercises and medicine continually regardless of medical treatment as it is a chronic disease whose symptoms are hardly mitigated.
