  • We present a discrete-time version of the distributional Little's law, of which the continuous-time version is well known. Then we extend it to the queue in which two or more customers may depart at the same time. As a demonstration, we apply this law to various discrete-time queues such as the standard Geom/G/1 queue, the Geom/G/1 queue with vacations, the multi-server Geom/D/c queue, and the bulk-service Geom/$G^b$/1 queue. As a result, we obtain the probability generating functions of the numbers in system/queue and the waiting times in system/queue for those queues.

  • This paper deals with the robust stability of discrete-time linear systems with time- varying delays and norm-bounded uncertainties. In this paper, the magnitude of time-varying delays is assumed to be upper-bounded. The sufficient condition is presented in terms of linear matrix inequality. It is also shown that the robust stability of uncertain discrete-time linear systems with time-varying delays is related with the quadratic stability of uncertain discrete-time linear systems with constant time delay.

  • This paper deals with the stability of discrete time linear systems with time varying delays in state. In this paper, the magnitude of time-varying delays is assumed to be upper-bouded. The stability of discrete time linear systems with time-varying delays in state is related with the stability of discrete time linear systems with constant time delay in state. To show this, a new Lyapunov function is proposed. Using this Lyapunov function, a sufficient condition for the asymptotic stability is derived.

  • This paper investigates the feasibility of the Bayesian discrete time approximation method to estimate the parameters of Weibull distributions of failures for two non-identical components connected in series system. A Bayesian model based on the discrete time approximation method is formulated to infer the Weibull parameters of two non-identical components with the failure data of the virtual tests. The study of this paper comes to a conclusion that the method is feasible only for some special cases under the given constraints on the concerned parameters.

  • This paper addresses on a $H_{\infty}$ sampled-data stabilization of a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy system. The sampled-data stabilization problem is formulated as a discrete-time stabilization one via a direct discrete-time design approach. It is shown that the sampled-data fuzzy control system is asymptotically stable whenever its exactly discretized model is asymptotically stable. Based on an exact discrete-time model, sufficient design conditions are derived in the format of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). An example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

  • In this paper we consider the variable structure control for a class of discrete-time uncertain multivariable systems where the nominal system is linear. Discrete-time switching dynamics are introduced so that a new type of state trajectories called sliding mode may exist on the sliding surface by state feedback. The quantitative analysis for the matched uncertainties will show that every response of the system with the proposed switching dynamics is bounded within small neighborhoods of the state-space origin. Also, by the similarity transformation it will be shown that the eigenvalues of the closed-loop systems are composed of those of the subsystems which govern the range-space dynamics and null-space dynamics. It will be also shown that ideal sliding mode can be obtained in the absence of uncertainties due to one-step attraction to the sliding surface regardless of initial position of states. • This paper introduces the modeling and analysis of a discrete-time, two-phase queueing system for both exhaustive batch service and gated batch service. Packets arrive at the system according to a Bernoulli process and receive batch service in the first phase and individual services in the second phase. We derive the probability generating function (PGF) of the system size and show that it is decomposed into two PGFs, one of which is the PGF of the system size in the standard discrete-time Geo/G/1 queue without vacations. We also present the PGF of the sojourn time. Based on these PGFs, we present useful performance measures, such as the mean number of packets in the system and the mean sojourn time of a packet.

  • This paper presents a method to extract flutter derivatives of bridge decks based on a combination of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD), system simulations and system identifications. The incompressible solver adopts an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation with the finite volume discretization in space. The imposed sectional motion in heaving or pitching relies on exponential time series as input, with aerodynamic forces time histories acting on the section evaluated as output. System identifications are carried out to fit coefficients of the inputs and outputs of ARMA models, as to establish discrete-time aerodynamic models. System simulations of the established models are then performed as to obtain the lift and moment exerting on the sections to a sinusoidal displacement. It follows that flutter derivatives are identified. The present approaches are applied to a hexagon thin plate and a real bridge deck. The results are compared to the Theodorsen closed-form solution and those from wind tunnel tests. Satisfactory agreements are observed.

  • In this paper, a linear discrete time system subject to the input saturatioin is shown to be exponentially stabilizable on any compact subset of the constrained asymptotically stabilizable set by a linear periodic variable structure controller. We also establish tat any neutrally stable system subject to the input saturation can be globally asymptotically stabilizable via linear feedback.

  • This paper analyzes a discrete-time bulk-service queue with probabilistic bulk size, where the service process is interrupted by a Markov chain. We study the joint probability generating function of system occupancy and the state of the Markov chain. We derive several performance measures of interest, including average system occupancy and delay distribution.
