  • The three-dimensional flows in the Weis-Fogh mechanism are studied by flow visualization and numerical simulation by the discrete vortex method. In this mechanism, two wings open, touching their trailing edges (fling), and rotate in opposite directions in the horizontal plane. The structure of the vortex systems shed from the wings is very complicated and their effects on the forces on the wings have not yet been clarified. The discrete vortex method, especially the vortex stick method, is employed to investigate the vortex structure in the wake of the two wings. The wings are represented by lattice vortices, and the shed vortices are expressed by discrete three-dimensional vortex sticks. The vortex distributions and the velocity field are calculated. The pressure is estimated by the Bernoulli equation, and the lift on the wing are also obtained.

  • The behavior of unsteady wake vortices for the two-dimensional flat plate is simulated by a discrete vortex method. The flat plates and their wakes are represented by vortex sheets. The vortex sheets are replaced with discrete vortices. The freely deforming wake sheets are computed as a part of solution and the ground effect is included by a image method. In order to predict wake shapes accurately and to model closely coupled aerodynamic interference, a vortex core model and a vortex core addition scheme are used. The simulated wake shapes convecting behind the plates in unsteady motion are compared to a flow visualization result and other numerical results. The present results agree well with them. The present method is also applied to the aerodynamic analysis of flat plates in tandem configuration in ground effect.

  • The Lagrangian grid-free numerical method, the discrete vortex method, was applied to solve the Navier-Stokes euqations. This method avoids the introduction of numerical viscosity swamping the real physical viscosity at high Reynolds number, unlike Eulerian method, e.g. finite difference and element methods. The boundary integral equation method for the potential flow solution was included to make the discrete vortex method more feasible for complex geometries. The fast adaptive multipole expansion method was incorporated to reduce the computational time from $O(N^2)$ to O(N) for the computations of vortex-vortex interactions. The test problems were air flow around one circular cylinder and two circular cylinders in tandem with various gaps. The numerical results were in excellent gareement with the experimental and other computational results. The applicabilty of the method was discussed with the indoor and the outdoor air pollution problems, especially the contaminant transport in the recirculation regions.

  • Vortex shedding from a circular cylinder is simulated by means of the discrete vortex method. The shear layer emanating from the separation point is approximated as a sheet vortex which is in turn represented by a sequence of discrete vortices. The strength of these vortices is calculated from the vorticity shedding rate and introduced at a small distance off the side ($\Theta=\pm\pi/2$) of the cylinder surface in regular time step. Sheet vortex cutting, rediscretization and replacement of vortex by vortex segment are put to use to enhance stability of the sheet vortex evolution. The simulated vortex distribution pattern very well reproduces structure like the Karman vortex street. However, as for the force coefficients, the qualitative properties are correctly predicted but some more improvements are needed for the quantitative accuracy.

  • Flow patterns and dynamic properties of two-stage Weis-Fogh type ship propulsion mechanism are studied by a discrete vortex method. To study mutual interference between two wings, two cases are con sidered - wing motions with the same and reverse phases. The predicted flow patterns correspond to the available flow visualization results. Time histories of thrust and drag coefficients are also calculated, and the interference between the two wings are numerically clarified.

  • A discrete vortex method (DVM) has been developed at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow, to predict unsteady, incompressible, separated flows around closed bodies. The basis of the method is the discretisation of the vorticity field, rather than the velocity field, into a series of vortex particles that are free to move in the flow. This paper gives a brief description of the method and presents the results of calculations on static and transversely oscillating square section cylinders. The results demonstrate that the method successfully predicts the character of the flow field at different angles of incidence for the static case. Vortex lock-in around the resonance point is successfully captured in the oscillatory cases. It is concluded that the vortex method results show good agreement, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with results from various experimental data.

  • DVM (Discrete Vortex Method) is a numerical scheme that handles discrete vortex particles to express continuous vorticity field. This scheme is proper to VIV (Vortex Induced Vibration) analysis because there is no need to generate field grids and VIV is caused by separated vorticity from the body. When DVM is applied to VIV analysis, there are some applicable schemes such as using vortex blobs, integral method for computing induced velocity, etc. In this study, the influences of these schemes are investigated and the practical scheme that is appropriate for VIV analysis is proposed.

  • The Flow patterns around two cylinders in various arrangements were studied by a discrete vortex method. The flow for the surface of each cylinder was represented by arranging bound vortices at adequate intervals. The viscous diffusion of fluid was represented by the random walk method. The vortex distributions, streaklines, timelines and velocity vectors around two cylinders were calculated for centre-to-centre pitch ratios of $P/D=1.5 and 2.5$, attack angles of ${\alpha}=0^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$, and Reynolds number of Re=1200. The results of simulation correspond to the photographs by flow visualization and the flow intereference between two cylinders in various arrangements was clearly visualized by a numerical simulation.
