  • A common requirement in digital communication systems is the generation of prescribed shape. The purpose of this paper is implement an efficient digital waveform filter by using the look-up table in the RDS(Radio Data System) encoder. And it has been shown that transmitted data can be recovered without an error. In order to implement an efficient waveform filter, the control algorithm is designed. For the purpose of composing an IC, the digital waveform filter is implemented by using the discrete elements. Moreover in this paper it has been proved that the proposed digital waveform filter can be applied to the RDS encoder.

  • Nowadays, railway system plays a significant role in transportation, conveying cargo, passengers, minerals, grains, and so forth. Railway ballasted track is a conventional railway track as can be seen all over the world. Ballast, located underneath the sleepers, is the most important elements on ballasted track, which has many functions and requires routine maintenance. Ballast needs to be maintained frequently to prevent rail buckling, settlement, misalignment so that ballast has to be modelled accurately. Continuum model was introduced to model granular material and was extended in ballast. However, ballast is a heterogeneous material with highly nonlinear behaviour. Hence, ballast could not be modelled accurately in continuum model due to the discontinuities nature and material degradation of ballast. Discrete element modelling (DEM) is proposed as an alternative approach that provides insight into constitutive model, realistic particle, and contact algorithm between each particle. DEM has been studied in many recent decades. However, there are limitations due to the high computational time and memory consumption, which cause the lack of using in high range. This paper presents a review of recent ballast modelling with benefits and drawbacks. Ballast particles are illustrated either circular, circular crump, spherical, spherical crump, super-quadric, polygonal and polyhedral. Moreover, the gaps and limitations of previous studies are also summarized. The outcome of this study will help the understanding into different ballast modelling and particle. The insight information can be used to improve ballast modelling and monitoring for condition-based track maintenance.

  • The free vibration characteristics of corrugated laminated composite plates with axial stiffeners is investigated using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The plate is stiffened by beams with open cross-section area. The equivalent homogenization model is used for the corrugated laminated composite plates. This homogenization model is treated a corrugated plate as an orthotropic plate that has different material properties in two perpendicular directions. The motion of equivalent plate is represented on the basis of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to account for the effect of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation. Stiffeners are considered as discrete elements to predict the local vibration mode to be generated by the presence of stiffeners. To validate the proposed analytical approach, natural frequencies and vibration mode shapes from the analytical method are compared with those from the FEA by ANSYS.

  • We present a new type of portmanteau test in the frequency domain which is derived from the discrete cosine transform(DCT). For the stationary time series, DCT coefficients are asymptotically independent and their variances are expressed by linear combinations of autocovariances. The covariance matrix of DCT coefficients for white noises is diagonal matrix whose diagonal elements is the variance of time series. A simple way to test the independence of time series is that we divide DCT coefficients into two or three parts and then compare sample variances. We also do this by testing the slope in the linear regression model of which the response variables are absolute values or squares of coefficients. Simulation results show that the proposed tests has much higher powers than Ljung-Box test in most cases of our experiments.

  • The current study investigated whether individual variation in motivational activation would predict the drug-use and interacts with discrete emotions to influence the responses to anti-drug advertisements. Motivational activation tendency indicates an individual's level to approach life-sustaining elements and defend life-threatening stimuli. Discrete emotion represents joy, sadness, and fear elicited by the advertisements. The experiment proceeded using both self-reports and physiological responses with 80 subjects. Results showed that approach motivation activation can be a target for anti-drug advertisements and in order to target individuals higher in approach activation, it is necessary to use the appeal type to elicit positive emotions such as joy.

  • Link attributes, such as speed, occupancy, and flow, are essential factors for transportation planning and operation. It is, therefore, one of the most important decision-making problems in intelligent transport system (ITS) to determine the optimal location of a sensor for collecting the information on link attributes. This paper aims to develop a model to determine the optimal location of a sensor to minimize the variability of traffic information on whole networks. To achieve this, a network sensor location model (NSLM) is developed to reflect discrete characteristics of data collection. The variability indices of traffic information are calculated based on the summation of diagonal elements of the variance-covariance matrix. To assess the applicability of the developed model, speed data collected from the dedicated short range communication (DSRC) systems were used in Daegu metropolitan area. The developed model in this study contributes to the enhancement of investment efficiency and the improvement of information accuracy in intelligent transport system (ITS).

  • Groundwater flow in fracture networks is simulated using a discrete fracture (DF) model which assume that groundwater flows only through the fracture network. This assumption is available if the permeability of rock matrix is very low. It is almost impossible to describe fracture networks perfectly, so a stochastic approach is used. The stochastic approach assumes that the characteristic parameters in fracture network have special distribution patterns. The stochastic model generates fracture networks with some characteristic parameters. The finite element method is used to compute fracture flows. One-dimensional line element is the element type of the finite elements. The simulation results are shown by dominant flow paths in the fracture network. The dominant flow path can be found from the simulated groundwater flow field. The model developed in this study provides the tool to estimate the influences of characteristic parameters on groundwater flow in fracture networks. The influences of some characteristic parameters on the frcture flow are estimated by the Monte Carlo simulation based on 30 realizations.

  • Collection and storing of multiple time series data in real time requires large memory space. To solve this problem, the usage of varying sample size is proposed in the compression scheme using discrete cosine transform technique. Time series data set has characteristics such that a higher compression ratio can be achieved with smaller amount of value changes and lower frequency of the value changes. The coefficient of variation and the variability of the differences between adjacent data elements (VDAD) are presumed to be very good measures to represent the characteristics of the time series data and used as key parameters to determine the varying sample size. Test results showed that both VDAD-based and the coefficient of variation-based scheme generate excellent compression ratios. However, the former scheme uses much simpler sample size decision mechanism and results in better compression performance than the latter scheme.

  • The alloying effects on the electronic structures of Zinc are investigated using the relativistic $DV-X{\alpha}molecular$ orbital method in order to obtain useful information for alloy design. A new parameter which is the d obital energy level(Md) and the bonder order(Bo) of alloying elements in Zinc was introduced and used for prediction of the mechanical properties. The Md correlated with the atomic radius and the electronegativity of elements. The Bo is a measure of the strength of the covalent bond between M and X atoms. First-principles calculations of electronic structures were performed with a series of models composed of a MZn18 cluster and the electronic states were calculated by the discrete variational- $X{\alpha}method$ by using the program code SCAT. The central Zinc atom(M) in the cluster was replaced by various alloying elements. In this study energy level structures of pure Zinc and alloyed Zinc were calculated. From calculated results of energy level structures in MZn18 cluster, We found Md and Bo values for various elements of Zn. In this work, Md and Bo values correlated to the tensile strength for the Zn. These results will give some guide to design of zinc based alloys for high temperature applications and it is possible the excellent alloys design.

  • An alternative approach for topology optimization of steady incompressible Navier-Stokes flow problems is presented by using P1 nonconforming finite elements. This study is the extended research of the earlier application of P1 nonconforming elements to topology optimization of Stokes problems. The advantages of the P1 nonconforming elements for topology optimization of incompressible materials based on locking-free property and linear shape functions are investigated if they are also valid in fluid equations with the inertia term. Compared with a mixed finite element formulation, the number of degrees of freedom of P1 nonconforming elements is reduced by using the discrete divergence-free property; the continuity equation of incompressible flow can be imposed by using the penalty method into the momentum equation. The effect of penalty parameters on the solution accuracy and proper bounds will be investigated. While nodes of most quadrilateral nonconforming elements are located at the midpoints of element edges and higher order shape functions are used, the present P1 nonconforming elements have P1, {1, x, y}, shape functions and vertex-wisely defined degrees of freedom. So its implentation is as simple as in the standard bilinear conforming elements. The effectiveness of the proposed formulation is verified by showing examples with various Reynolds numbers.
